A thorough breakdown and lesson on my chord melody arrangement of this classic Charles Mingus tune.. a lot of guitar players will know this via the Jeff Beck version, (which is also fantastic), but this one is based on the original Mingus recording from the 1959 "Mingus Ah Um" record.

This song also goes by the name "Theme For Lester Young".. this is a tribute to the great Pork pie hat wearing saxophone player who epitomised the swing era, and kick-started the bebop age!

Full of beautifully rich and interesting chord changes that intertwine in a seemingly effortless way, all while an incredibly simple, but effective blues scale based melody sits on top. Magic! 👌🏻

Buckle in for a lesson on chord voicings, octaves, technique and tone!

I am really looking forward to this one ... yep, I was introduced to the song through Jeff Beck's version which I love, but was blown away when I finally got a copy of Migus Ah Um on vinyl. One of my favorite songs. Mingus played several times in Dayton Ohio in the early 1970;s, but sadly I was both unaware and a kid at the time. I did get to see the Mingus Big Band a few years ago which was great!

Nice version. This is a bit reminiscent of John McLaughlin's version on "My Goal's Beyond" which pre-dates the Jeff Beck version. I prefer the chord melody treatment to Jeff Beck's single line take - there's just such rich harmony there although the melody is quite strong and unique. Looking forward to exploring this!

What can I say I’ve played your chord melody arrangement of this tune you previously posted and I’m happy to revisit it with you again. Mingus was a genius and this tune just gets into you and haunts you somehow. Great tune and great lesson, but this is what we have come to expect from you. You’ve set the bar at quite a height with these chord melody lessons.

I really appreciate these arrangements along with the chords The notes played together with the melody are like a sweet Symphony. The chords to me are like putting the horse before the cart and not the cart before the horse Thanks for putting this together Helps me alot Been playing guitar for years Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks🤔🤔🤔

Just signed up for your lessons. As a 70 year old, tech challenged retired dentist, I’m having difficulty downloading the tab for this great song. I was able to do it yesterday but it’s not allowing me today. Probably something on my end but any help would be appreciated Thanks

Hi Harvey, apologies for the slow response, I only just saw your message about this. I'm hoping you figured it out in the end? There is so limit to how many times you can download the files so if you misplaced them, go ahead and download them again and save them to an easy to find folder. :)

I’ve always been haunted by this Mingus tune by many artists (I never heard the Jeff Beck version until now) and your arrangement is one of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a perfect stretch goal for me to learn and I know I will get it. Chord melody playing seems to be the direction I am heading. I’d love to have you do a deep dive into chord melody: how do you think about and construct them. I recently heard Adam Levy say they would be better named, “melody chords”.

Beautiful song – terrific lesson. Thanks!
