Perhaps the ultimate tele-tune?.. certainly one that everybody should learn at some point. Stunningly beautiful, yet surprisingly simple. We embellish the classic Santo and Johnny melody with some double stop harmony, country bends and other shenanigans. Grab your tele, (or next best thing), and join me! Lesson materials include TAB/Notation in guitar pro and PDF formats, along with my backing track.

Greg

Amazing! But how am I gonna to have time to nail that in just the 2 hours before kick off

Ben Biffton

Awesome I'm learning the setzer version these days

nick kizirnis

Agreed! My favorite song. My favorite Tele song too. Saw Bill Kitchen play it a few years back (he added some whistling!). Danny Gattin and Brian Setzer too (no whistling). Can’t wait for this lesson!

Gideon Marriott

You might be back to your guitar quicker than you think 😆

Greg

Sadly , you make a great point 😫😂

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha good point.. might need some guitar related distraction by half time 😬

Alex Farran Guitar

Very cool! Everyone should learn this melody.. it's such a classic instrumental.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Nick, glad you like it too! An essential guitar instrumental in my book.

Hank Volin

Perfect timing! I had just put Jeff Beck's version on my re-learn list and this will really help me fill the tune out even more

anthony (Tony) byrne

Love this tune Alex, I make up my own cd's of old stuff like this and if course The Harry lime Theme, another classic!

Alex Farran Guitar

Very cool, thanks for the comment Tony. Harry Lime Theme.. man, I forgot about that!.. have you heard the Mickey Baker version?

banjer71

Thanks for this lesson Alex. I always wanted to learn this tune.

anthony (Tony) byrne

No I haven't Alex, Micky Baker was the first Jazz guitar book I ever bought, will have to look that up on YouTube!

Tyrone Miller

Really enjoying this one Love ur expression of this one 🤗🤗🤗

Ron Bogdanoff

Excellent tune. I have played this before but I need to work on clean tone, this number you can not be sloppy!

Alex Farran Guitar

His “Wildest Guitar” is a must listen in my opinion. I featured it as album of the week on here a few months back. So good 👌🏻😎

Tim Wallace

This is one of my personal favorites and one I have played a lot in various bands over the years. I love what you did with the arrangements, really playing homage to the original while put putting in some tasty and head turning licks that had me saying "damn, I wish I had thought of that one." Really nice. I was lucky enough to take lessons with Amos Garrett when he lived in San Francisco, I learned this tune from him as a vehicle for learning his patented two and three note bends. Lately I've taken to playing this on a standard Tele tuned down a half step. As a result, I can make the bend from G on the 12th fret third string all the way to C - a fourth. It's a cool effect. Also slackened tuning facilitates the aforementioned bends and makes it much easier to create the pedal steel effects so critical to getting this song right. Anyway, thanks and VERY nice job!

Paul Hodgson

Great tone on that Tele! What amp are you playing through? EDIT - should have listened to the end haha, sounds amazing!

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha no worries.. I always include gear talk near the end of videos. The Emprize Falcon is an incredible amp 👌🏻

Brendan Tindall

I went for a Baja Tele second hand, I was told 2010 model Great neck on it

Eirik Kildal

Exellent playing! Great lesson! Fantastic tone on your Nachocaster🙏 Looking fwd to get my Nachocaster in a few months😎 Brgds Eirik Kildal

Brian Shank

Alex, I just discovered your channel in the few months and wanted to compliment you on all of your phenomenal lessons. I'm looking to learn how to set a mood and convey emotion the way you do in a song like Sleepwalk. Thanks so much for all that you do. Best wishes. -Brian Shank

Patrick

Alex, an absolutely brilliant tune/lesson choice. Iconic, accessible, and dreamy. A great one to play when someone comes over and all of my toys are out and they say, "Play something." Thanks so much.

Gert De Groof

Deceptively easy this one…getting those bends in tune is harder than I thought, especially the two string bend on the G7. Thanks for this much needed lesson in finesse Alex!

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure Gert.. you're right, those double string bends are very difficult to master!

Nick L

More great stuff Alex. Thank you!

Alex Farran Guitar

Very interesting! Thanks Tim!.. that giant bend does sound very cool indeed!

Rich Tortolini

You mentioned Zoom one on one lessons … could you let me know the fee structure?

Nick Whalen

Awesome lesson, once again Alex. Here is my recording of it - I had a hard time getting the harmonics to ring in time but it didnt matter, I was having so much fun! https://youtu.be/2vVP90o7k84

Alex Farran Guitar

Beautifully done Nick, I love it! Just as smooth as your "Ashokan Farewell" take too! Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

dan gardiner

yeah, that harmonic on the 7th fret sounds like a thud on my archtop..Old Country Music; I think of Hank, Kitty Wells, Charlie Rich, Waylon...isn't this surf music, like the Ventures? whatever the label, it is great...

dan gardiner

Weird coincidence; my partner and I were painting a mural up near Green Bay, and he's in charge of music, through his I-tunes...so on comes Miles..Led Zeppelin......Beck......then Sleepwalk comes on! He says "I used to remember my Dad playing this tune in his bar, many moons ago!" Can't wait to surprise him with my "flawless" version!

Ed Hinchey

Hi, how come when I open the GP files I do not actually hear the guitar? I only hear the metronome. I have never had this issue before with any other GP file and just tested on other files as well. Had no issues. Thanks in advance.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Ed, sounds like the guitar slider is still turned down in the mixer, just open the guitar pro mixer panel and move the guitar slider up! ;) To go into further detail.. I turn the midi guitar volume slider down in the files because I embed a real audio file in, and of course the midi guitar would sound terrible sitting on top of the real thing. I only recently found out that unlike the full desktop software version of Guitar Pro, the iPad and iPhone versions don't currently support real audio file playback. So, I'm assuming that you're on iPhone or iPad, and hearing no real guitar audio, plus the volume slider for the midi guitar being turned down = only hearing the metronome. Again, to clarify, just open the "mixer" panel in the app and shift that guitar track's volume slider up. You'll also see that my guitar pro files can have up to 3 or sometimes 4 tracks that you can switch between within the mixer, (as well as alter the volumes to).. this is because I often include lead guitar, rhythm guitars, bass guitar etc.

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh man, that's really cool! Did you get this learned and ready to show him?

Ed Hinchey

Hi Alex, appreciate the reply. I think it may have been because I was on v7 GP. I updated to v8 and it worked. Luckily it was on sale for Black Friday so that was helpful. Just joined yesterday and really excited about following. Brand new to your channel. Cheers Ed

Rob James

Hey Alex - Happy New Year - decided to get on with learning Sleepwalk. Question is -I’m on it from collections but can’t find backing track?? I’m sure I’m not seeing something here. Rob

Rob James

All good - found it. 🙏 new to platform so still work in process

Richard

Some of the lead lines on this make me think of the vocal melody of early Beatles number 'This Boy'.

russ

Where is tablature?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Russ, just click on the preview of this lesson to make sure you've fully opened the post, then at the bottom of my text you'll see "attachments" where you can click to download the files

Alex Farran Guitar

Yes, I can totally see that! A very similar 50's "doo-wop" vibe for sure

Michael Seebeck

Alex, how do you get your reverb sound? Can you share some basic settings, I am not sophisticated and playing through a BOSS Katana-100 amp.

Stephen Sadlier

He has this gear listed on the YouTube description: Emprize Falcon amp Browne Amplification Carbon v2 (overdrive pedal) Strymon El Capistan (slapback delay) Universal Audio OX - amp top box Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Logic Pro Universal Audio plugins

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Michael, Stephen kindly posted my setup info for this piece so I hope that helped a little? I always favour a very simple setup of telecaster, into some kind of boost of OD pedal, then into a black-panel Fender amp where I turn the reverb up about a quarter of the way.. this of course differs from amp to amp so it's best to gauge it by ear and decide just how much reverb you want.

nick kizirnis

Hi Alex, I finally got back to this one and finished working it up. What a fantastic arrangement. I'm sure you know I like that Danny Gatton version (oh and Brian Setzer's too) but I LOVE yours, and I'm having the best time playing it ... thank you! Also - have you heard Bill Kirchen's version? It stays true to the original, but he whistles(!) the melody after the bridge, ha ha. I don't think he's recorded it, I've heard him play it live with the band and solo. Hope you are well!!
