A stunningly beautiful, intimate sounding album. Sonny Rollins working his magic on the tenor sax, accompanied by the inimitable Jim Hall on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on upright bass and Ben Riley on drums. The arrangements are sublime, the tasteful musicianship on display from Jim Hall is spell-bounding. Just listen to his guitar parts on the cover of Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child" linked above 👆 and on the track "Without a Song";

You can very clearly hear the profound influence of Jim Hall on Julian Lage's playing. And the warm tone of the single P90 es175 is something else 👌🏻

Needless to say, some Jim Hall lessons will be coming soon so watch this space! 😉

Your album suggestions often send me down interesting and unexplored avenues, thank you!

I had an oppty to see Jim Hall in a little jazz club called Hoppers on the lower east side of Manhattan in the 70s. He was accompanied by drums and a trombone which surprised me. Also caught Joe Pass there - unforgettable. Great album selection Alex. I'll be picking this one up. Thanks again

Well let’s just say that this album is of course a classic, but these musicians were all class acts who were not only great talents, but role models to generations that followed. a Jim Hall lesson “bonus” can’t wait and curious what period of his you will look to for a lesson?

Thanks for all your great work!! I saw Jim Hall and Sonny Rawlins both in Toronto Canada, separately. Jim Hall with Terry Clark n Don Thompson. Sonny Rawlins had his own group. Both were excellent.

I’m a big Sonny Rollins fan! Never paid much attention to the guitar players he recorded with… Great stuff, Thanks!

Gifted musician and a beautiful human being. Excellent pick of the week. Cheers.

Loving this recommendation Alex. Never really listened too much to Sonny but I don’t know why. This is great and will definitely listen more to both Sonny and Jim Hall

The Sonny Rollins of this era is certainly a colossus of saxaphone and jazz. Indispensable. Astonishing meeting of a super-powerful wind player and a delicate goldsmith guitarist.
