Phew!.. this is a biiiig lesson! Elevate your blues playing with a handful of tasty ingredients.. Major and minor pentatonics, minor 6th and minor 9th arpeggios, whole/half diminished scale and simple triads!

We put all of this to good use to play over the rather beautiful changes of a Gospel-esque blues turnaround in the key of G. We'll learn some beautiful ways to play the chord changes before diving deep into the lead side of things.

I've gone for a spicy tone on this one, so do stick around for the "Tone talk" portion of the video if you're interested in what I used.

Hi Alex, this lesson is a 100% match for what I‘m looking for. Abolutely gorgeous!!! I really love what you presented. I‘m currently on holiday and very glad i insisted in not only taking an acoustic guitar with me but also my telecaster and my small black spirit 200 amp with me although my wife thought i‘m crazy to do so. I can‘t wait until tomorrow to dive into the details of the lesson. Thanks a lot, you made my day even better than it already was. Best regards and keep on going, Christoph

Looks to be another gem I’ve downloaded it for my flight home and It might be the new way for me to watch your lessons. First watch full attention with no guitar in hand?! Thanks.

Paul Scafidi

Very very interesting. I’m getting a ton of milage just out of the progression discussion.

Ramblin' Tom

Killer tone and killer lesson for me. I like your style so much.

Alex...My man....Your lessons are just what my musical doctor would have described, I have a really good ear, and have really good facility getting around the neck, but run up against roadblocks cause my ears can only take it so far, I have been lazy diving deeper into exactly what I am playing harmonically. You're nailing it for me!!!! Thank You

Alex Farran Guitar

That's so good to hear Rich, thanks for the comment! Really glad the lessons tick the right boxes for you my friend 🙏🏻

Busy week, so just tuning into this now. Superb lesson! There's so much content, it will take me multiple views to take it all on board! That's on me though, as it's explained really clearly and I love how you break it down to show how each idea is created and can then be applied in another context. Thanks for such a great lesson

Thank you Brendan, I appreciate that! Sure thing.. just take your time and chip away piece by piece. 👌🏻

Dear Alex,, Thank you for this great chords progression and the many variations all around the neck, that’s very inventive and dynamic solutions as always-:) How can this turnaround be integrated in a 12 or 16 bars blues ? I have been looking for a standard gospel blues' chords’ chart, but couldn't find any... Can you share here the full chords sequence or eventually recommend us a particular song to listen to as a reference ? Many thanks in advance for your reply. Regards, Nico

This may be obvious, already stated, etc. but I found a useful way to visualize the whole-half diminished scale for myself - it's just a half-step approach note below each chord tone. (I think Alex often refers to this kind of motion as "side stepping," which might still apply in this context?) Anyways, if the intervals of a diminished chord are 1 - 3b - 5b - 6, I just think of the arpeggio and add a half-step before each chord tone. I think that produces the scale. Felt like a lightbulb moment for me, so I figured I'd throw it out there in case it helps anyone else.
