👍🏻🎸🎵awesome lesson and tones

Led Zeppelin "Bring It On Home" Starts with a shuffle in E, then the riff is 3rd position E pentatonic. Then Page plays double stops/hammer ons through Plant's verse's. Master class in what Alex just taught.

Ran Bush

So Alex, you have a Nachocaster but you're playing a vintage Fender in this video? A vintage ES-175 in one video, vintage ES-335 in another video, you're just torturing us mere mortals, right? Is it impolite to ask how many guitars you currently own? 8D

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha, I apologise for that! 😅 Honestly, I don't consider myself a collector at all.. I own probably 20 guitars, but half of them I've been given and rarely put to use. My main stable of guitars that get constant use would be around 8 including acoustics and a bass guitar too. I'll do a Patreon exclusive "gear" tour video at some point for sure ;)

MarkF

I am really appreciative of you sticking to rhythm playing in this lesson. Very helpful and so many essential things to work on which sound very cool and accessible-so let’s say the lesson to kick off Part 2 was perfect thanks.

Jonathan Hubbard

Great lesson Alex - love the pace and style of your teaching

Alex Farran Guitar

What do you mean George?.. as in which “collection”? I’ve added it to the “Blues and Soul” collection but will start a new one for “Blues rhythm guitar” when I’ve done a second video on the subject and add it there also.

Wayne America

Cool! I'm on board for season 2. Thanks for getting back to rhythm guitar basics here.

Ran Bush

"... gear tour video..." Thanks Alex, that would be great to see.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Wayne, glad you enjoyed this. Much more rhythm guitar work to come! 👌🏻

2026-09-12 16:00 Love that John Lennon ‘You Can’t Do That Groove’. I played that with a band last year. Just so dirty, and as you say, ragged. Wicked dirty solo too! Great ideas, here, thanks Alex. That slow crawl (from the ZZ Top song) also reminded me of The Pusher by Steppenwolf. I also love the intersection between blues and funk that goes way back to 1950s R’n’B rhythm guitar on things like Slim Harpo. Keep it coming.

Where is the tabs for this lesson

Alex Farran Guitar

tyler taube

Thanks for the great lesson. I got a lot out of this one. Looking forward to working on Stormy Monday next!

Ron Bogdanoff

Excellent lesson. Rhythm guitar guidance is greatly appreciated!

Jerome Oks

I haven't heard you play the Nachocaster in a while. Is it a case of getting used to it?

Jerome Oks

Alex, what is the Mersey Sound? Somehow I associate the Lennon groove you played as being the Mersey Sound. Or is it just another ploy from the Wicked Albion to fool the rest of the world;)

Jerome Oks

This lesson was very good for my self-esteem. More than half of the Blues grooves you showed us were part of my vocabulary. Thank you for the other half, they are nice additions.

Alex Farran Guitar

No not at all.. I gig it twice per week so it's always working hard, it's just not featured in a video for a while as I've been using different guitars for different styles etc. As soon as I record another country or dirty blues video, you'll see it again on my channel for sure. My main tele without doubt and my main guitar in general!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hmmm I'm not sure to be honest.. I guess whatever those lads in The Beatles played kinda became "The Mersey Sound". I can't think of any other mainstream Liverpool based bands who were doing that same dirty blues groove pre-Lennon. I think whenever people talk about "The Mersey Beat" or "Mersey Sound" it's more a wider generalisation about the many bands with vocal harmonies and jangly guitars that followed in The Beatles footsteps.

Alex Farran Guitar

I'm very glad to hear that my friend, a good balance of old and new then! 👌🏻

TimmyD

Cheers Alex new member here I've just started working through the "Must Know Blues Grooves; Chord based riffs for rhythm guitar". I'm looking forward to exploring the other blues studies.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey Timmy! Very glad to have you here with us buddy. Happy to hear you’re enjoying this lesson. I have a lot of Blues material here already and will be adding so much more to that. Have a great Christmas! 🍻🎄

robi

Wow! Lots of fun and work to have and do with this lesson. I look forward to the turnaround lesson to polish this off with. Would be nice to have some country and rock grooves in this same format.

Enrique Garcia Lopez

This lesson is awesome Alex, thanks! What would you recommend as a follow up lesson to this one for rythm in Blues?

Katie King

These are neat techniques and a lot of fun to play/practice. It's right up the alley I have happily found myself in. I'm interested in improving the tone of the rhythm; do you lift the side of your right hand after each stroke all the way off the strings between mutes? Also, to piggyback on another member's question below, are there specific videos you can recommend for this area? Especially mixing rhythm and melody on one instrument.
