A real deep dive into one of my favourite standards. Chords, melody and harmonic analysis. And as I'm sure you're all accustomed to, there's a ton of useful information in this lesson that goes far beyond the scope of this one song so do make sure to follow along closely.. guitar in hand of course! ;)

Ralph Lyle

at 14:22 you mention a way to play the "line cliche chord sequence" down an octave using bass notes. This is great info for me, because I can't perform the usual sequence. Because I can't place my middle finger across multiple strings. I dropped a heavy weight on it. Luckily I can use it otherwise. But this method gives me a chance to play the sequence, at least in a different way. Thanks for this

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m glad to hear that option works out well for you! But very sorry to hear you damaged your finger! 😬

Ralph Lyle

that sequence in the usual way , is the only thing I can't do - that I know of :-) Been wondering for a while how I would approach that problem. Now I have a way. Really appreciate that.

Ralph Lyle

You have any other work arounds for people who can't stretch out their middle finger? Asking for a friend.

Ralph Lyle

could you build a personal lesson around this topic - middle finger workarounds? Because I imagine there are considerations that I'm not even aware of - because I'm only an intermediate player.

Alex Farran Guitar

Yeah for sure! I’m more than used to adapting things for people. There are always alternate options! 👍🏻

Lillefar

This is an amazing choice ! Thanks a lot ! ! !

Lillefar

Btw, I really miss chord boxes. Would you consider putting up chord boxes on the pdfs (and maybe on-screen) as well ?

Cliff Roberts

Another truly great choice Alex!!! THANKS!! If you're not familiar with the version from Jerry Garcia and David Grisman I would highly recommend listening to it! As well as "Rocking Chair" on the same album. I'm pretty sure you would really like it!! Thanks again for everything you've been posting, absolutely amazing!!

Daghan

Truly magnificent Alex. Thank you for this remarkable teaching, really motivating and just to the point

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Daghan, that really means a lot! Very glad it resonates with you 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks so much Cliff, glad you enjoyed it! I am familiar with that version indeed, and it's great.. but your comment will prompt me to resist the rest of that album too 🍻

Alex Farran Guitar

The only reason I don't include chord boxes on tunes like this is because of the sheer amount of movement in the chords, it would get very messy and congested looking. If you use the guitar pro software, you get the option to display the chord boxes or not as I do still make sure to program the boxes in correctly just in case. As far as putting them on screen goes, I'm afraid I won't be doing that.. I already put at least an absolutely minimum of 12 hours work into each and every video and just don't have the time to figure out how to over lay extra graphics and the like.. plus, it wouldn't be fair to give it out for free when you guys are paying for the materials!

Alex Farran Guitar

Cheers Jerome, that's the same version I linked to in my video and made a couple of references to. Thanks for including it here in the comments too though, always useful! 👍🏻

Jerome Oks

Totally awesome. I also I love the Lyrics. Very moving. Although I am aware that you were not singing;). And the chord movement is elating..

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Jerome! Glad you hear the words too, even on instrumental versions. I do the same!

Jerome Oks

Do you (or did you at first) sing the song in your head when you play the melody? Imagine that, maybe that's why they call the head the head!!!!!!

Jerome Oks

I understood 70% of the harmonic choices the first time running through the chords + another 20% after listening to your commentary . I must be making some progress at last ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s so good to hear! A great measure of progress for sure! 👌🏻

Jerome Oks

I did not get the name of the other player besides Oscar Aleman who inspired your rendition. I knew Aleman's, Jerry Garcia with David Grisman, Dizzy Gillespie's, and I found one of mine playing the chords on the acoustic and singing from 2017, nothing to write home about.

Jerome Oks

Fapy Lafertin sounds like an Anagram.

Jerome Oks

Vive Fapy! Been looping Fapi's Russian Lullaby for the past 1/2 hour.

Paul Hodgson

Things like this make me realise how much there is stil to learn... but going to give it a bash!

Declan o’ Luasa

Great piece Alex. Irving Berlin is a stone cold genius. Any tips on how to effectively mute the strings you are not playing on the chord track. For example on the A7 and Bb7 it kind of looks like your using either the tip of your index finger or your thumb to mute the A string. Is that right? Or are you just avoiding the string. I'm playing with my fingers, on a Gretsch Tennessee rose with flatwounds. Would you suggest I try roundwounds and a pick ? I really like the tone you are getting . .. Cheers , Declan

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Declan, yes that’s right, use the tip of your 1st finger to mute out the A string on those chords. Search for a Q&A I did about a year ago and I go into some detail on that type of thing and show some good close up shots too. Hope that helps! P.S: yeah I reckon anything will sound good on that lovely Gretsch of yours but I’d try some 12 gauge rounds perhaps 🤔

Ian Cowan

I absolutely love this lesson... so much in this esp the arpeggios. Thankyou Alex.

Gert De Groof

He Alex, hope you are doing ok. I have a question on the arpeggio you play at 12:04. The A7b9. Could you explain exactly how you approach that. Are you thinking A7 with an enclosure around the root. Or rather A7b9 with approach note to the root, or maybe Bb diminished? I understand what you’re playing, but because of all these options I get lost in m head it seems…thanks man, take care. Really great song btw.

Gert De Groof

Ok…should have watched the entire thing first…seems you go into detail on that in the melody part ☺️

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the great question my friend, I hope you found the answer in the video.. let me know if you want me to extrapolate further 👍🏻

Gert De Groof

I could have you extrapolating for hours, but I think I got it 😄. Thinking A7, adding the b9 and approach note to the root, resolving to Dm. 👌

Ron Culbertson

Hey Alex, Ron here Lake arrowhead California. Ever since I learned the Russian lullaby and could play it a tempo and the same with the Jimmy River’s licks I dove into Hungaria. Since then, I have not been able to practice any of your new lessons. I’ve become so hung up and trying to learn this song, a real challenge for me, I have to write out all the fingerings because the copy that I have of these Django songs it never has the fingeringsleft hand as classical music, Segovia, etc. would give you. Anyway, I’m still out there practicing away very slowly, I may add.

Alex Farran Guitar

I'm glad you're enjoying in Ron, these pieces are well worth your time so I'm sure it'll all pay off in the end! Make sure you're putting my tab and notation to good use if you're stuck for which string and fret to use for any particular note. This should then inform your decisions re; fingering!
