In this lesson we’ll learn, and break down the concepts used in my solo included in the Adam Levy collaboration video at the link below;

https://youtu.be/N7pJ7PH9kqQ?si=s4DEhVcGgrBLenY6

A collaboration I was humbled to be involved with, featuring some incredible players, including Joey Landreth, Tim Lerch, Jeff McErlain and Jack Ruch.

We were each tasked with improvising a solo over the changes to the Motown/Soul classic “Something You Got”, and in this lesson I go over my approach and show you some easy ways to navigate these kinds of changes. Triads, melodic phrasing and much more!

Some great players on that Adam Levy vid. One of my favourite new jazz discs is Spry by Adam Levy, I never tire of listening to it. You did great Alex and I look forward to your breakdown of how you approached it.

Thank you Alex! Wonderful solo and fantastic lesson. I can’t wait to work on this 🎸🔥

Thanks Nick, really glad you like it! I can never get enough of that soul groove. Addictive to play over 👌🏻

Ian Quittner

Haven't listened yet; but is there a reason why the chord head is written on the bass staff?

Alex Farran Guitar

I hadn’t noticed to be honest.. this was the chart Adam sent us to prepare for the collab video. Looking at it though it makes sense right?.. chords labelled above, and a couple of the important/landmark bass runs notated for structure. 😎

Ian Quittner

I was just curious. The notes are all correct for the bass clef and it is always good to remember how to read it. Thanks.

Cool tune, love the use of the iv minor at the beginning of the tune, I was just looking at another tune that used that idea. This is basically the same tune with some minor differences (literally) as Willie Nelson's "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away?" that Al Green made famous. Nice version featuring a duet with Lyle Lovett here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY7jt9aBnSc

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah yes, that's really nice. I love the iv minor thing so much. Got a lesson coming in the near future specifically about it

Alex, some great stuff here as always .. Id love to see some more in-depth lessons on some technical skills, such as the vibrato you pointed out here. After doing it wrong for so long im now having to unlearn some bad habits. There are lots off these little nuggets throughout your lessons but it would be wonderful if there was one lesson focused on "best practices".

This is so good, so so good. I have to close the shop and run to my guitar now.... can't wait to put some work on this. Lovely !

Sean

I might be a little biased, as I am a Patron after all, but your solo for Adam's video was absolute fire! Kind of shame that your segment was the only one without a name scroll at the beginning. I can't wait to tear into this over the weekend. So glad you're giving us a lesson on it!
