Can you comfortably strum your way through an authentic Country Delta blues in C, using open chords, substitutions and a few connecting runs? Find out in today's lesson!..

It’s an essential skill for any guitarist and unfortunately, as with a lot of open position chord work, it all too often tends to be played with a serious lack of imagination, feel and vibe.

The blues deserves much better than that, and it deserves our close attention for 20 minutes!.. let's make Lonnie Johnson proud!

Acoustic or electric, this stuff works on any guitar, any time and any place.. that's the beauty of the blues.

The lesson materials include a transcription of my opening performance, as well as my 4 page "Evolution of a 12 Bar Blues" chord study!

Great lesson very informative and just makes you want to find a sunny porch somewhere to sit and strum a little-love that D28!

Marinho Del Santo

That is the magic of Blues...and the magic of Alex! It can not be better for a sunny (and almost Spring) Saturday. Thank you !!!

Went out to work in the garden but the ground was frozen so I came back inside turned the heat up and now Im getting to the roots of the blues with this great Delta Blues lesson. Seems to me this is the original roots of the blues. I really would like to get a good handle on the Delta Blues. This should help. Sounds pretty Rootsie.

Nice one Alex, I'm new here and loving it.

GoofyRaf

Nice one Alex, thanks 🙏 I’d love a little insight you made in the beginning, country finger picking style, could be very interesting. Thanks again

Second comment here: Alex, there is so much to dive into your "spicing" ideas that I would suggest you do not present something "completely different" but 20 more "spicing recipes for Blues" like this one!!!

Great lesson! One key that I figured out in recent years, and is very evident in this lesson is playing partial chords. Enjoyed this one. I like that Alex builds lessons at different levels. Sometimes I feel like pushing myself and other times I don't. And there are still some more advanced concepts in this one - I like that too. And a Travis picking lesson would be very cool. When I was taught to do that about 10 years ago, it was really frustrating to learn - but I think of it now like riding a bicycle - once you get it, you get it, and it is a wonderfully fun thing to be able to do. I have done it at jam sessions before and it is something different to do instead of just strumming along with everyone.

Thank you Peter, I'm glad you like the varying degrees of challenge in these lessons!

Very cool Robi, sounds like a good way to spend a day by the fire! I'll upload a "recommended listening" delta blues playlist over the next few days so keep an eye out for that too!

Christopher James

Wonderful lesson! Loving the encouragement to listen deeper into 'basic' open position arrangements over the last month. It unlocks so many aspects of chord movement / harmony / voice leading. So much of that is down to your teaching and layering of lessons.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Christopher, I really appreciate the kind words and am so glad the lessons are combining well to give you some fresh ideas to work on! 🙏🏻

The 1 6 2 5 turnaround is an interesting topic. It can be played with the diatonic chord qualities, or as all dominants, or a mixture of, or with b5 substitutions.

Johan

I print all your lessons out and keep them in three ring binders, so I did remember that lesson. But others may not have😉

Patrick

This lesson is a gem. I encountered the C, C7, F, F-, C, G7 progression first with Jorma K on his version of Hesitation Blues. But never with the backup theory to enable using similar sequences in other contexts. The reciprocal sharp 4 diminished and augmented sequences in this lesson (and on of your previous lessons) unlocked a mystery for me. This lesson is a great stepping stone toward jazz standards that spin rapidly through cycle of 4ths and 5ths. I wish I had access to this lesson before floundering in that deep end of the jazz pool. Well done Alex, many thanks and praise. Be well.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Patrick, really glad you get just how prevalent and essential these progressions are.. great work my friend!

Eirik Kildal

Hi Alex. Thanks for a great lesson. Regarding the short fingerstyle blues example that you throw in (6min out in the lesson). Is it possible to ask for the tabs/notation for this? brgds Eirik

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey buddy, unfortunately I don't have that part tabbed out.. it was just a completely improvised thing I did in the moment. But, the good news is that I'm working on a really deep lesson on that exact style of blues fingerpicking so do keep your eyes peeled! 😎

Hi Alex, I’m can’t seem to unpack this zip, never had any problems before so don’t know what the issue is. Not on my iPad, not on my phone nor my pc. ‘Unsupported file format error’. Don’t know if anyone else is experiencing this. I can figure it out by ear, but a visual reference is always nice to have. So I just need the pdf so maybe you can put that up here as well? Or a re-upload of the zip. Thank you.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Gert, no worries buddy, I've just re-uploaded the zip file so do try that, and if that doesn't work I'll upload all of the individual files to the post. Let me know!

Gert De Groof

That did the trick mate, zip was now 4MB instead of 11kb before. Works like a charm again. Thanks 🙏
