Charlie's solo on the Benny Goodman Sextet's 1939 recording of "Rose Room" is possibly my favourite swing era electric guitar solo of all time! His ideas are so melodic and playful, and his flow is incredible throughout. You might think this is a hard thing to decode, but in truth, Charlie's note choices are always very logical and easy to understand, which is why this is such an essential solo to learn for any budding jazz guitarists out there!

So much crucial vocabulary laid down in one 32 bar solo, it's really something!

We will also talk about the chord changes as we make our way through the solo, and I'll show you some authentic, yet simple ways to lay down the changes for yourself.

We also get into some talk on picking styles, (rest stroke vs alternate), and there's a small sprinkling of gear talk for those of you hunting for that extra 5% in the quest for vintage-accurate swing era tone!

Can’t make it today for the livestream, due to work, but man am I looking forward to catching up later. You’re Charlie, gipsy and Ribot stuff will always be my favourite ones.

Zoran

Hi there Alex, I’m new here and can’t wait for this one. The latest lead studies on Peter Green’s Need you love so bad was great. Do you have any content that addresses mixing lead and rhythm? See you in a few minutes. Greetings to all, Zoran.

Johan

Congratulations on your article in Guitar World Alex!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Zoran, and welcome aboard! Sure thing, these lessons come to mind when thinking about lead-centric rhythm playing: https://www.patreon.com/posts/dont-let-me-down-103576251?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link https://www.patreon.com/posts/change-is-gonna-107995783?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link https://www.patreon.com/posts/elevated-rhythm-120682249?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

No worries buddy, hope you enjoy the lesson when you get a chance to sit down and watch it!

Marinho Del Santo

Comprehensive reading, as usual! This one brought me into the vintage blues mood... Thank you, Alex!

Tyrone Miller

Always Loved that era of music.Appreciate the time ,work and effort you put into this one.Now time for me to get to work on this masterpiece🤗🤗🤗

I'm bummed I missed this and looking forward to seeing what I pick up from this video. I've been working on this for a while. I always have to mention the Jimmie Rivers and the Cherokees' live version from The Brisbane Bop album is like an extended version that even includes Charlie's solo note for note and soooo much more. I don't think these discussion host video links as well. I might add this and a few other versions on the discussion forum. Mary Osborne!!!~ https://youtu.be/D2dLIFRqUqU

Alex Farran Guitar

I hope you dig the lesson mate! I love the Jimmie Rivers version too, I was toying with the idea of including his parts also but the lesson would’ve been like an hour long. You’ve probably already seen it, but a few years ago I did upload a video including the Jimmie Rivers part.. I’ll link it here and if anyone’s interested, I’ll upload my transcriptions for it too. Let me know. Cheers! https://youtu.be/LwsbvMNzJR0?si=zm5VS_IOkm4dFrPo

Great lesson timing, I was working on this solo last couple of weeks. I have oriented myself to it a while back and recently have been focusing on it again. Have tried various picking approaches on the triplet section and have moved to what you are calling the gypsy approach with the sweeps but I have been sweeping both up and down. Working on getting that to sound smooth and up to speed. Thanks for going through the rhythm playing at the end that is lacking in other lessons I have seen, essential! Looking forward to more Charlie C !

Jerome Oks

I have this theory about what also made Charlie Christian be so appealing. The Amps in those days had very little head room and would break at the volume level CC had to use to be heard. That resulted in a sustain that made the guitar not sound so tiny.

Jonathan Fowles

Yes please for the JR / CC transcriptions…!

D.J.

Agreed. Shitty amps back in the day just sounded too cool.

D.J.

Yep, I've seen your video and I think I bought the transcripts too. It's fantastic that there are teachers on the interwebs taking on this material. Thanks for having such great taste!

Gert De Groof

How did this escape my attention. Ofcourse we are interested Alex! 👍🙏

Sander Geerdink

Together with Alex' other excellent lesson for Guitar World, this is enough to keep me occupied for a while. I learned CC's 'Found a new Baby' solo with Alex' lesson material a while ago, and that was time very well spent (although I'm still struggling with some of the downstroke sweeps and picking). Thanks for the great lessons!

Gert De Groof

Hey Alex, I noticed you put a pickguard on your ES125. Is that an original or did you find an aftermarket one? Mine didn’t have the original anymore, and I was looking for a replacement.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey buddy, that’s the original pickguard.. it’s a little bit worn and bent out of shape but looks kinda cool! 😎

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying these lessons Sander! And it sounds like you’re certainly putting the hard yards in practice wise.. well done my friend! 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Totally! That tone was warm, driven and fat as heck! Love it 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the comment Ron, I’m really glad you enjoyed this lesson! Yes, these picking styles can take a real long time to get used to. A massive learning curve. But the tone payoff is so worth it! Keep up the hard work buddy 🍻

Alex Farran Guitar

Enjoy it Tyrone, it’s such a good one to have in your repertoire.

Tim C.

Hi Alex, what a great lesson !! You make it seem so easy with your delivery and content well done !! You’re an excellent teacher and inspiration !! Thank you !!

Timothy Daniels

New member here. This lesson sealed the deal and I joined the group. Very clear and enlightening lesson. Many thanks Tim

Alex Farran Guitar
