As you guys will know, I really don’t like to focus on gear, much preferring to put the focus on expanding our knowledge and ability as players, and ultimately having fun being creative and making beautiful music with our new found skills and ideas! But, having said that, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy a bit of gear nerdiness as much as the next guy, and you’ll know that I have a real soft spot for vintage guitars and amps.

So let me introduce you to a couple of new acquisitions from the past month; a rather lovely 1964 Fender Bassman with matching 2x12 cab, and a Reissue Fender 63’ Spring Reverb unit.

These are a match made in heaven, and I’m really enjoying putting them through their paces. The Bassman is a notoriously excellent pedal platform. When I first fired it up, I dialled it in with the volume, bass and presence to 4, the treble to 6 and haven’t touched the controls since, it just sounds so good and takes overdrive pedals beautifully!

At some point I’ll get around to cranking it for that notoriously punchy Bassman overdriven tone. A very inspiring amp all round I have to say!

Congrats! Really nice amps. Can't wait to hear them on your next lessons... :) The only tube amp I own is a JCM 800 50W Head with a 4x12 1960A cabinet from my Trashmetal days... :D It is way too loud for my studio so unfortunately it sits in the garage. So I resort to Sim amps like the Tonex - I got a nice Lazy-J 20 profile that goes well with real overdrive pedals (Protein e.g.) and I am also using the Universal Audio Tweed plugin as a Unison. Do you have any experience or tips, getting nice tones out of that? Cheers, Sebus

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Sebus, man I LOVE the JCM800!.. that was my main gigging amp for years!.. (100watt head with a 4x12 cab).. beastly thing! Nowadays I’m mostly using single 1x12 combos but I still have that half stack in the spare room! I’ve used amp plugins many times, and a consistent thing I find is that I have to really run the input level very low, and chop off a ton of high frequencies in order to make it sound more rich, full and life-like. The UAD unison plugins are the best I’ve used as far as amp-sims go. Very nice indeed! I have their Dream 65’ pedal which I always have in my bag as a backup just incase too.

Hard not to love a beautifully tattered amp that you know has been tossed about and worked, but still delivers vintage looks and sound!

tyler taube

very nice! If you were stuck on a deserted island what set up would you take with you?

Sebus

HA! I knew it.. old Marshall heads ;) Yeah they're a beast! I will definitely try out to dial in the plugin as you said. I guess I always drive the input too hard to make up for the loss in volume because of the greater dynamics compared to my other sound sources.. Thank you! I have their Vox AC Pedal (I think it is called Ruby) but I think I should have rather bought the Dream'65 as I prefer the Fender tones now. Maybe one day I will invest in an OxBox and resurrect the JCM. But for a single Tube amp that seems a bit daft. A Bassman or a proper Tweed would be a dream... :) Anyhow thanks for sharing and enjoy playing them!

Oh I had a couple those under my bed put them in the skip cause she needed more storage space Joking obviously, although I know next to nothing about amps they look cool but I love vintage stuff too probably because I am old.

Rob French

Awesome! If you need those serviced in the LA area, check out Frank from Forgotten Gear Restorations. He is top notch

Johan

I have a tip. Purchase your gear before you have kids.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Rob, I appreciate the recommendation. I already have a great amp tech right near me here in Nottingham, England, but it’s always good to have options overseas too! 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha you had me for a minute there! 😮‍💨😅 You’re right!.. the vintage stuff looks cool as anything ontop of sounding amazing!

Alex Farran Guitar

Man, that’s a hard one. Without doubt, my favourite amp of all time is my 69’ Deluxe Reverb, so I guess that would be my choice, although the Princeton would be a slightly more portable and sensible option. Guitar of choice would be a tele.. probably the Nachocaster. And one pedal?.. the Strymon Deco 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

I totally agree mate! The old amps have tone and looks in spades! 😎👌🏻

Dave

so true. lolo. my kids have moved away now. so i just bought a Magnatone...its waaay better looking than any of my kids. lolol

Johan

In defense of your kids…those Magnatone amps are really attractive. 🤣

I'd love to see photos of your 64 Princeton. And what are your thoughts on modelling amps? When I restarted my guitar journey, the allure of the Fender Mustang GTX was too good. Since then I've read a lot of purists who cannot stand modelling amps, even the Fender Tonemasters which are said to be as close to the real thing as possible. But I guess you can't replicate the "feel" of tubes. For me, it wasn't just the expense of the 'real' amps paired with pedals, but is also a volume thing. I just don't have the chance to crank my amps loud enough. Though one day I would love to get a real Princeton or Deluxe Reverb.

John Rhodes

You have great gear. You get the best tones out of it. Every time! Always a joy !

James

Beautiful. Looking forward to seeing and hearing this setup in future videos!

Richard

Nice one...how many watts is it? Bassman's are good for some Abbey Road Era Beatles tones?

Ben Biffton

6g6b bassman ! Now you have to do a setzer study !

Sava Kalbachou

Hey Alex, how do you find Reissue Fender 63’ Spring Reverb unit? I don't think I saw you playing it on any of your videos. Would you recommend it or is it overkill/not great value etc.?

Alex Farran Guitar

Only just seen this message, sorry! Hmm, yes it's quite a BIG and BRIGHT reverb sound that isn't always suitable. I will be using it for some Spaghetti Western stuff soon, but genuinely I can't really recommend you buy one. 😬

Sava Kalbachou

thanks so much for the response! You confirmed my concerns: really great for very specific sound (surf / spaghetti western etc.), but not really versatile. I ended up buying Boss FRV-1 pedal (again 😅) which emulates this sound close enough. Really looking forward to your Spaghetti Western stuff, I hope you'll make a lesson around it!

Tom

Beautiful Bassman Alex. your jazz tones are exquisite. I ordered a custom tweed copy of a 59 Princeton for Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue tones. Do you use any reverb when you are playing your Champ or J amps? Wondering if I will need a pedal. Thanks.

Tom

Hello Alex. Your jazz tone is exquisite with your tweeds. (and everything else) I have ordered one for that Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue tone. Question: Wondering if I need a reverb pedal when it arrives?

Alex Farran Guitar

Nice move Tom, everyone needs a tweed in their life! 👌🏻 Yes, I use a Strymon Flint with mine for reverb and trem. Such a great combination. You’ll love it!
