A lesson on how to take a great chord progression, and get creative with it. We throw everything at this one, from simple chord arpeggiation, to triads, inversions, pentatonic major fills, pentatonic minor licks and even some bagpipe drones! We also pay close attention to our tone, dialling in that elusive "edge of breakup" sound that gives us so much dynamic range to play with.. (overdrive pedal recommendations near the end of the video!)

We use the chord changes from the Blind Faith classic "Can't Find My Way Home", featuring Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker!

Another very approachable lesson that works on many levels. Many thanks for putting this out there.’

David Lockwood

Another great guitar lesson Alex. Thank you.

Marinho Del Santo

Nobody that I know does such excellent harmonic refinement, Alex. Thank you!

Drew Todd

Super clean. I hope I can get that level of clarity in my playing. Tone is also incredible, as always.

Hey Alex, I've been busy with recording, polishing repertioire and a dozen and a half other regular life things here the past couple of months. What a pleasure to to just be with you for this fine lesson today in your studio. It's really peaceful and joyful to hang out with you and just dig on the quality and excellence and focus on bringing these refinements and understandings into my playing. It's been about a year being a patron and there's no better money spent. It's really something unique, hard to put a finger on it exactly, but I'm sure everybody else here knows what I'm talking about.

Thank you Drew, you’ll definitely get there just keep up the hard work! 👌🏻

Thank you Carlos, that really means a lot to me! I’m so glad you feel welcome and comfortable hanging out with me here in my studio and on Patreon! I love sharing music with you all and if it inspires you, then I’m doing something right! Thanks for being here buddy 🙏🏻

I've recently stopped a few subscriptions to cut costs but your content is worth every cent! Love this, amazing stuff!

Ole Michaelsen

I did the same, and I fully agree with you.

You’ve given us another groovy Sunday afternoon, I saw a blind face in Washington DC at George Washington University. The brings back a lot of memories. What a great song. Capaldi on drums the incredible voice of Stevie Winwood. Sorry these days are gone. Thanks for bringing them back.😂

Matt

Hey Alex, looking forward to learning this one too, but like many of your lessons these just move too fast and deep for me. Have you made any lessons suitable for beginning-intermediate players? I PM'ed you a few weeks ago but did not hear back. Thanks!

Peter Tiffany

I can't play everything Alex shows us and I have been playing for 30 something years. I spent 2/3 of that time doing singer/songwriter stuff - because I sing too. Only in the last 10 or so years have I started to mess with electric and single note lines. I am kind of an old man now! Even though I can't do everything - I almost always take something away from his lessons. Some advice - take it slow. Be easy on yourself. Take the things he shows us one or two bars at a time. Slow them down. Pause and rewind the lessons often. This is a journey. Remember what brought you to the guitar in the first place. For what it is worth, I have to repeat all of what I just typed for you to myself from time to time. I have found the following lessons to be more beginner/intermediate friendly - they also happen to match what I like to play - "Find My Way - Americana Country", "Americana Soul," "Open Chord Magic - Americana," "Open Chord Tricks Dirty Blues in Am," and, more recently " County Chord Magic." Not that I don't try my hand at other lessons like Stormy Monday, or Soul Ballad Chordal Fills. I hope this helps.

I also found this tone interesting in a good way. It is different than other lessons somehow. Cleaner, almost acoustic but still with the edge of breakup. I messed with my amp settings to try to copy it.

Alex, I am an old codger and never really wished to be younger until now. I have played guitar as long as I remember, but if I could have found this kind of instruction when I was younger, I would be a monster guitarist by now. Even at my age, I am so glad I discovered your excellent lessons and your fantastic playing. You have a unique skill set with your talent for teaching together with your ability to make such beautiful sounds with a guitar. I also want to mention that I was very touched by your comments over the recent loss of your best friend. I too have been best friends with several cats and I think I understand how you feel. It's a special thing to have the kind of relationship you must have had with such a unique and often misunderstood animal. I believe that Louis was very fortunate to have someone like you in his life. Thanks so much for your wonderful lessons. I can't wait for the next lesson.

Richard

Hi Alex. Finding this very inspiring, this style of playing is really what I'm enjoying. I've got a few drive pedals now to go with my deluxe reverb, a honey OD, joyous vintage OD and a tone city black tea. I'm thinking the honey would work best for this?

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad you enjoyed it Richard! Yes indeed, the Honey Bee (one of my all time favourite pedals) would be perfect for this tone!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you for the kind words David, that really means a lot to me on all fronts. I appreciate you being here as part of our community. From one animal lover to another, thank you 🙏🏻

Hi Matt, I get that for sure. I suppose most of my lessons are intermediate-advanced, but there are certainly some that are more beginner-intermediate range. Peter makes some great suggestions in his response above so do check those out. Check out all of my "survival guide" videos, as well as my "must know standards". Also a couple of my country blues and Americana lessons are more accessible. Personally, I would just pick what you like the sound of best and grind away at it.. that's one sure way to skyrocket your progress.. "biting off more than you can chew" can work wonders in the world of music.. it's literally the way I've learned for all of my life.

Matt

Thanks guys. This helps.

Peter Westbrook

love your lessons keep up the great work Cheers
