Open chords, (also referred to as "Cowboy Chords"), are often all too quickly dismissed by advancing guitarists, but in this lesson we learn to appreciate those old friends in a new light.

Using an old Bluegrass classic as our model chord progression, we start with the basics on how to really get the feel and tone right, using a mixture of picking and strumming. It is essential that your chords are crisp and clear with no muffled notes. We then decorate these chords with classic runs and embellishments, things that really bring a song to life!

As I often say, it's crucial that you take pride in your rhythm playing and really serve the song. Hopefully you'll come away from this lesson with a handful of new ideas for spicing up those lovely open, "cowboy" chords!

Love this. Maybe some Doc Watson or acoustic Clarence White in the (near!) future…?

Johan

I enjoy a bit of bluegrass/old timey country. It all seems simple until you try to play it well. And really, not at all distant from jazz in the fact that they play the changes. You’re a great musician and teacher Alex, thanks.

JonB

Deceptively simple when trying to sound clean and yet fresh. I like challenging things but also really enjoy the likes of Hank Williams classics and Bob Wills. A Couple of other favorite tunes that fit in are the likes of Walking the Floor Over You or Milk Cow Blues. Endless opportunities to experiment. Thanks for your good work.

Johan

My ADHD keeps getting distracted by that bass in the background. Did you get rid of the Jazz bass? That looks like a Epiphone Jack Cassidy. Some day I will buy a bass…I just waffle between a P Bass or a Jazz bass.

Marinho Del Santo

I agree. The old country style is great! Please, Alex, get onto it when there is a chance...

This is one of my favorite lessons that you’ve ever done. Thank you Alex!

Great lesson many thanks. I love anything acoustic so selfishly I’d love to learn anything by David Rawlings or Cameron Knowler (Felicity is a great acoustic tune)

Ron Culbertson

Saddle up !! Where’s the chaw? Great feel

Alex Farran Guitar

Great suggestions mate! I’m working on a Dave Rawlings/Gillian Welch lesson at the moment 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah yes, well spotted. I got the Cassidy bass in late 2023 and it’s been on all my backing tracks since. I have flatwounds on there and it sounds sooo nice. The “jazz bass” was a really horrible, cheap bass I owned since I was 14. Cost me £80 at the time! It now lives in the spare room with a bunch of other old tools 😂

Alex Farran Guitar

You’re so right Johan, it’s all the same language of music at the end of the day. I often joke that the only difference between country and jazz is the kind of hat you wear 😂

Ron Culbertson

Is there a way to send you recordings of my guitar work?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Ron, sure.. you can email me anytime. Contact@alexfarranguitar.com
