Another deep dive into a classic Charlie Christian solo, (with a garnish of chord study on the side!).

Charlie’s solos are the best place to go if you’re looking for easy to understand, old school swing and bop vocabulary to add to your own improvisations. You can never beat going right back to the source and learning from the masters!

This one is a bit of a technical workout to boot as it’s played at quite a pace and with a thunderous momentum and a fearless flow.

Excellent lesson. Like having the section with rhythm playing and thinking about adding movement to the changes. Charlie Christian solos are very horn like I would imagine horn players were a big influence on his soloing.

Another Saturday treat. Even from just listening I always pick up a couple of new ideas from your explanations. I’m on the second page of the Django Basso. But I’ll get to this as soon as I can thanks again.

Lovely! It'll take a while before I can play this at a decent tempo. Xmas '26 perhaps? Cheers

Many moons ago our band was on the “B” stage of a jazz festival that featured The Susie Arioli Swing Band on the “A” Stage and we were floored by Jordan Officer who did an incredible version of Honeysuckle Rose-I wanted a hollow body Gibson and I wanted to swing like that and this is a good chord comping lesson for me as my wife will love to sing it too-memory lane. I think he played an L7. The album version is on their Pennies From Heaven album. I may try and add some of the solo teachings too. Thanks Alex for another great lesson.

Still struggling with that free floating reststroke…I feel like it’s not only key to the tone, but also to the speed they played at. Growing up as a metal player, can’t seem to get rid of my palmmuting tendencies 😀. Thanks Alex, really, really love this one. Take care.

Alex, We've just finished Thanksgiving and are approaching Christmas. I just wanted to say thank you for your work. I'm retired now and finally have the time to do something I've always wanted to do, learn music and to play the guitar. Your lessons are great, although somewhat challenging for a beginner. Be well and safe. Enjoy the season.

Thank you Bill, I'm so glad you enjoy the lessons! I appreciate the kind words buddy🙏🏻

Yeah…not easy. I try to incorporate it into my arpeggio practice as much as I can. But I really have to focus to not fall into my usual technique. It for sure is a dedicated style that needs a lot of dedicated time. I usually get stuck at around 85 to 90 % of your speed, which is already pretty good I guess. I mainly struggle with keeping unwanted string noise in check when playing with a free floating wrist, and also accuracy is harder to get right. Not to mention I seem to be developing some kind of strain on my left wrist over the last few months which worries me. Probably nothing to do with my free floating right hand, but a bit of a struggle nonetheless.
