Ellington/Strayhorn/Hodges.. one of the finest musical machines of the last century!

“Isfahan” is a long standing favourite piece and this live performance is just sublime. The ever humble Duke holding the sheet music for Hodges.. that’s the kind of humility you want in a band leader.

Listen to the phrasing, the expression, the emotion in Johnny Hodges’ playing!

Do go and check out the studio take that made it onto the “Far East Suite” record too..

Duke Ellington - Isfahan

@cookdandbombd - http://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk Encoded by lfbarfe! Watching the Duke Ellington Jazz 65 show (kindly encoded by Mr lfbarfe), I was VERY taken with the performance of Isfahan, from the "Far East Suite." I've chopped it out to share on YouTube, partly so I can keep it handy. Hope you enjoy it. Johnny Hodge's playing is extraordinarily beautiful, very warm and emotive. If you like this, then check out Demonoid for the full thing.

Hey. Something very very unique. Not so familiar for me but somehow absolutely unique, brilliant and fascinating. Huh.

There is no better way to spend Friday evening than listening to this! Wonderful! 🎷

Could you imagine saying, I’m in Duke’s band?

Serious musicians playing seriously beautiful music. No effects, no pomp and circumstance just respect for the score and of course respect for Duke. So good.

Changes I wish I could understand, beautiful music, so complicated and yeti makes it sound so smooth. It’s the Orchestra, those background chords and the timing. Thanks for the turn on, it truly is when I missed. Ron.

Amazing…made me search for a guitar arrangement. Jesse von Ruller’s got a real tasty one.

Excellent, thanks for sharing! Everyone needs some Duke Ellington in their repertoire .

A lesson on a Billy Strayhorn tune (Isfahan, Blood Count, Day Dream, etc) would be interesting--his chord changes are beautiful and puzzling.

I am in Duke’s band. :)
