I love how much you guys enjoy my Marc Ribot style lead studies, where we delve deep into the elements that make up his style, tracing the roots all the way back to Django Reinhardt, Hubert Sumlin etc, but in this lesson we just straight up analyse some of his finest, most iconic work; his lead parts from Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" from the Rain Dogs album.

I'll take you through the intro and his solo as we pick apart the how, the why, the what and where exactly these ideas come from and how they fit in with the bigger picture of the harmony.

We also spend some time speaking about proper technique and tone for this style.

All in all, a fantastic piece to work on that'll sharpen your ability with triads, arpeggios and the harmonic minor scale!

Materials include note for note TAB and notation of these parts, (plus my ad-libbed chordal stuff from after the solo), and my backing track.

YES!!!! I so look forward to this, 🙏🏼

Looking forward to watching today Alex, I have been making too much use of your excellent content. And, in attempting to "strengthen" my technique, with much more repetitive chromatic runs... I have done in my left hand with my first extreme bout of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. This will sideline me for a few weeks. Which means today's lesson is view only :( I offer this link to a series of exercises https://www.healthline.com/health/de-quervains-tenosynovitis-exercises#thumb-flexion I encourage you all to add in these exercise to your daily routines. Cheers

I’m sorry to hear that Gordon! I hope you recover soon and are able to play again without pain! 🙏🏻

Gordon Brew

Thanks Alex I have thankfully done this prior to a 4 week work trip that will not include a guitar. I will be jonesing to get back at it. These/your Robot and Django lessons were what led me to subscribe here. I'm @inevitableaccident on Youtube. Cheers

Hey Alex, I always wanted to learn this tune... always procrastinated. Now it's time to go for it with confidence, thanks to your material. Thanks so much Cheers

Love the Saturday afternoons even more since I discovered your chanel Alex :)) This is another great great one, which appeared as a 2023 halloween treat if I'm correct, but it's very much worth digging into it like you do. Plus the 'ad-libbed chord part' makes a real difference. Thanks, fabulous as always

Phil

Same for me, Marc Ribot introduced me to Alex's channel . Gordon, I hope things get better for you very soon

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks buddy, glad you're enjoying it! Yes indeed, I posted it along with the tabs and backing track a while back.. good memory! ;)

Marc Ribot lessons are a great thing to be known for! Really enjoyable lesson, Alex, as ever.

Thomas

Always a good day when I find a new lesson waiting in my inbox, thank you Alex!

Thanks, Alex! Putting in a plug for a future look at some of Ribot’s y los Cubanos Postizos work. Couple of my favorite guitar albums

Alex Farran Guitar

Definitely on the agenda my friend, I have a couple of pieces off that record that I will turn into lessons.

Rob French

I knew it!! This tune is on the soundtrack to Down By Law. I went through a Jim Jarmusch phase, and this tune has been seared into my brain ever since. Thank you for re-introducing it and Mark and Tom to me. Now I have some listening homework to do...

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha same here Rob, and Down By Law was one of the films that first introduced me to Tom Waits! Great stuff 👌🏻

I must confess: these are my favorite lessons! I love Marc so much. Thank you, Alex.
