Join me for a VERY deep dive into a Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West Classic! We’ll begin by learning the finger tangling head of the tune, before turning our attention to a chord accompaniment study that’s full to the brim with authentic Western Swing voicings and manoeuvres!

As usual we’ll run some harmonic analysis along the way, so as to deepen our understanding of the ideas covered.

Not only an incredibly fun piece to play, (especially if you get your looper involved!), but a really great place to draw vocabulary from, as well as being a genuinely challenging technical workout that puts the focus on your arpeggio knowledge and picking abilities!

*Updated zip file with chords and bass line in PDF formats.

Outstanding!

Ron Culbertson

Ron in California here, super enjoyed all those cuts that you turned us onto with Jimmy. His biography was tragic but interesting. This one’s gonna be fun. Loved your intro. No question Jimmy was born to play.

Michael Collins

outstanding is right!!!!!!!! Thanks Alex

Johan

Great lesson. Would you mind sharing the chord chart?

Brian

Fantastic! Love the no-look. No on likes a show off though.

Lee Amundsen

Hi Johan, its in the GPX file just not in the pdf.

Johan

Thanks. I was expecting a PDF.

Guy Roberts

Great lesson. Great piece of music.

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha thanks Brian, I actually tend to play better when I’m not looking. I think it helps you to connect more to the sound rather than become a spectator of your fingers. Something you have to learn to do for playing live of course, but also helps in general. Plus it makes you trust your ears more I reckon! 🤪

Alex Farran Guitar

Apologies guys, I've sorted it now so if you re-download the zip file you'll find the chords in PDF and the bass line too. Cheers!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Ron, I'm glad you find his playing (and story) interesting! A legend of the telecaster!

Johan

Thank you Alex.

Patrick

This is being greedy because obviously there's a lot here already but a slowed-down backing track (maybe 2/3 speed?) would have been helpful here. I know I can probably slow it down with the right MP3 player but it doesn't quite sound the same!

Alex Farran Guitar

You're right Patrick, there is already a LOT in there with the materials, but as it's a bank holiday Monday and the weather is so beautiful, I'll upload a 70% speed version for you and add it to the downloads section above ;)

Patrick

What a legend. The notes are almost within my reach. Playing them up to speed is a way off!

Alex Farran Guitar

Just take your time buddy, use a metronome and see if you can add 10pm each day for a while 👌🏻

Patrick

Fantastic lesson. One of your best presentations. I love the "parenthetic" comments (e.g., pheasants, Rosie, "elastic" time-frame, bear with me, etc.) it yields a deeper human connection. I'm reminded of the Jimmy's Blues lesson, when you cocked your head like a Golden Retriever as the plane flew over .... hmmm, I live near Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Helicopters fly over frequently. I play the identify the chopper game - Apache, Blackhawk, or UH1 (Huey). Finally, a special thanks for the addenda materials. I want to sharpen my Western Swing rhythm playing, those inversions, line cliches, and other tricks are wonderful chops to have available. I sincerely thank you and the others who commented before me. All the best from Pinehurst!

So awesome! I’ve got it up to 80% speed in Guitar Pro now. I’m always amazed by how hard a piece sounds before I start learning it, only to find how completely logical it becomes after playing through it a few times. This flows so nicely, and the arrangement Alex put together fits perfectly under the hands. Great job, man! I’ll see if I can be brave enough to post a rendition once I work out the majority of the kinks. I have to say, this piece in particular is helping my picking tremendously.

Alex Farran Guitar

That's so good to hear Steve, well done for putting in the work to get it down so quickly! Would love to see a video if you get a chance!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments Patrick, they really made my day! I'm glad you enjoy these lessons so much my friend! :)
