Let's put those arpeggios and triads to work today and see if we can't turn them into authentic, spicy, swinging bebop and jazz lines!

The ii–V–I is one of the defining progressions of jazz, and mastering it is a lifelong pursuit for many musicians. Today, we'll build a solid foundation for soloing over it in a way that's melodic, tasteful and easy to understand. We'll also take inspiration from Charlie Parker and Django Reinhardt to see how two masters approached using their arpeggios and triads over these changes.

Get your loopers at the ready for this one! ;)

Thank you Alex, Always a treat to hear play and the information given. One last thing. No tone talk I Always enjoy that. Makes me feel like I'm not alone in my quest. But, tone comes from the hands and the heart of the artist as well. Cheers!

Ruddy Dezac

Merci Alex! I'll have to process and reinforce these concepts now. Cheers.

Thank you Larry, glad you enjoyed it! Ah yes.. the gear for this was just the es175 neck pickup, straight into my 69’ Deluxe reverb, (vol, treble and bass on 3, reverb on 1).

I good morning Alex morning in California that is, good stuff. I really like to use the enclosures find that note above and below as the kind of map to move around. Thanks again for the good advice and lesson.

Sammy Banawan

I really enjoyed this lesson. It’s maybe the first one I’ve been able to play relatively well! Maybe it was easier or maybe I’ve been improving. Hopefully the latter! Thanks as always for the clear teaching.

Chris

Hey Alex, that lesson was Hella Sick, as we say here in Cali. Keep it up!

Pamela Collins

I’m having a problem accessing written material that comes with lessons. Anyone who can provide me a tip. Thanks.

Sammy Banawan

What’s the problem you’re having? There’s a link on each post with a zip file of the docs.

Alex Farran Guitar

Absolutely Ron, with these arpeggio ideas and enclosures, you have licks for life!

Bill

Great! Thx!

Sammy Banawan

I appreciate that. Watching your lessons repeatedly and failing miserably has been a remarkable learning experience. I’ll keep at it.

Patrick

Alex, this is truly a great lesson. I have been banging my head against the ii-V7-I mystery wall for longer than I care to admit. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. You're presentation here made something click for me. Even when I play these exercises, it sounds like jazz. I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that you pour into these lessons. Additionally, the breadth of styles and eras covered keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, Cheers Mate, Patrick Pinehurst, NC USA.

Hello Alex just joined wondering how to get tabs to the lessons

Marsha in Austin

Love the concept of how many notes to spend- this immediately focuses the brain - a budget of notes… love that! Thanks!

Alex Farran Guitar

That's amazing to hear Patrick, I'm so glad this lesson did the trick for you!
