Jazz chord melody with a twist. I’ve always thought this standard had a kind of haunted house vibe, so rather than simply presenting it as a conventional jazz arrangement, I thought it’d be fun to inject some darker, grittier character into it for a change!

It comes out sounding like some kind of blend of jazz noir, manouche, surf, Cuban and rockabilly… and I dig it, and hope that you will too!

We take inspiration from players such as Mickey Baker, George Barnes, Django Reinhardt and Marc Ribot as we explore some beautifully dark chord voicings and melodic devices… whammy bar optional, but it certainly doesn’t hurt 😉

Michael Laine

This is going to be amazing as always… but that Fm6!! 😩

John Olenski

some real finger gymnastics involved with this one. I struggle with thumb over chord fingerings. I pull the strings out of pitch. Suggestions welcomed.

Tom

That is so engaging Alex. I love the juxtaposition of genres. which is what attracted me to Johnny A 25 years ago. Here we go!

Tyrone Miller

Everything I do it's gotta have jazz in the mix,Great arrangement Lad !!!

Duke Williams

I had existed in ignorance never having listened to Barnes or Baker. WOW! Thanks…copacetic baby.

Minstrel atHome

Waouah, great, this one goes very far , many many good ideas to bring in our playing… , thank you very much and congrats 🍾!

Michael Collins

wonderful - recognize it from a 60s detective television show - did you name the source?

Alex Farran Guitar

Interesting! I could imagine it being used for an old TV show. The source is simply the original jazz standard, written in the early 1930’s.. I named a few of my favourite versions in the video but there are so many great takes on this classic. I kinda combined some favourite ideas from them all, plus a bunch of my own reinterpretations. Glad you dig it! 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad I could introduce those guys to you, “Wildest Guitar” by Mickey Baker is a must know instrumental guitar record for me. And basically anything and everything George Barnes did is highly worth digging into. Here’s a version I did of one of his tunes.. May film a lesson for this soon actually!.. https://youtu.be/gFo9rOl0TPI?is=85vZjh2KhGNFRQ_4

Alex Farran Guitar

Man, that’s a hard thing to put into writing, let me know if you have a free 20 mins to hop on a Zoom call in the coming days and I’ll give you some pointers. (Free of charge).

Ron Culbertson

Another lesson where you show me how little I know. A real challenge thanks a lot.

stefano cardi

What a track, congrats Alex. I'm chasing the style of Ribot, Frisell, and Lage, and your content and tips are pure gold. Thanks a lot

John Olenski

My week is pretty open except for Wednesday. Let me know when and how. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Alex 🙏

Alex Farran Guitar

Cool, I’ll drop you an email later and we’ll get it organised 👍🏻

Ron Culbertson

Hey Alex, Ron here. I sent you a Guitar piece. I wrote called closure based on one of our lessons wondering if you received it? I sent it to Patrion and your website. Let me know if you would please.

Scott Deeg

Another fantastic tune and arrangement. But I'm going to have to get a guitar with a 22.5" scale just to play Farran chords! :-D

Gert De Groof

Thanks for pushing it somewhat again Alex, some thoroughly challenging chord voicings here! Love it. And I’m totally stealing that C9 to F major chord run on 25:06, love your rabbit holes 😀. Brilliant lesson again 🙏 take care

Alex Farran Guitar

Really glad you’re enjoying the challenge my friend, and yes, that little C9 run is pretty sweet, I have to admit! 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha, I admit, sometimes it’s tempting to get a shorter scale guitar for these chord melodys. 🤪

Tim C.

a wonderful departure into dreamland…

Ryan Griffiths

Great chord voicing here - brings the best of Big Lazy to mind - thanks Alex!

Chris Capaldi

Wonderful melody and lesson here Alex. You mentioned learning the tune Polkadots and Moonbeams (one of my favorite standards) do you happen to have a copy or link to the chord melody you learned?

Alex Farran Guitar

I do! I plan to do a full video lesson on it soon, but I'll email my transcription over to you in the meantime ;)

Ian Cowan

This is my favourite style and reminds me of Harlem Nocturne in a way. I had a NGD the other day with a bigsby.... need to give this a go. Cheers Alex.

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah yes, I love Harlem Nocturne! Hard to go wrong with a bigsby.. enjoy! 👏🏻

Ian Cowan

Ah cheers Alex. Can I share a video with you where I did a version of Harlem 3yrs ago, it's by no stretch of the imagination good... but I got my very first Gretsch then and Jazz Noir/chord melody is just something I can lock myself away in my garage with my dog on a night and play what I can....to my hearts content.

Alex Farran Guitar

Yeah that’d be awesome! Email it to me: contact@alexfarranguitar.com

Ian Cowan

Thanks so much Alex... sent you a link.
