I've admired these microphones from a distance for many years now, and although I already have a very nice assortment of large diaphragm condensers in the studio, when I saw this pop up on Ebay for a very reasonable price, I just had to grab it!

I set it up, ran it through my Neve 1073dpx pre-amp where I engaged the 50hz low cut filter and rolled some additional low end off under 110hz. You can really drive this mic hard as it has very low self gain, so I pushed the preamp more than I usually am able to, and am very satisfied with this sound. It has just the right amount of natural compression and saturation. It really seems to capture the natural, woody tone of this 1963 Gibson B25n beautifully.. very organic and very much how it sounds in the room.

No further EQ or compression was added in Logic, but I did sprinkle a little room reverb in to sweeten the deal a tad.

What do you reckon guys? I mean, the looks alone are something to behold, but I'm happy to report that the sound does indeed match the aesthetic qualities!

Meanwhile….back here on earth I’m still just trying to learn how to play the guitar🤪. Not at the stage where I’m thinking about microphone choice. On the up side- absolutely worth it just for the performance- unparalleled playing!

Andrew Degaust

I do love the sound of well aged wood. The balance of the sound was elegant.

Joel Powell

I get Misty living vicariously through your mic purchase, Alex. It sounds fantastic.

David Lockwood

Know nothing about microphones but the guitarist ain’t bad, ain’t bad at all ( damn good) 😉. Perhaps that’s the name for a new composition? 🤔😊

Pieter B

Beautiful! Would love to see this version as a lesson.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks mate, I literally came up with it a matter of minutes before recording this. Was more an exercise in re-learning a standard in a totally different, rarely used key. I chose A Major so I could try to incorporate open strings often. But yes, perhaps I could do a lesson on this!

Michael Hurley

Beautiful performance, tone, and ambience. And let's not gloss over those magic words: Neve 1073.

Zach Enlow

I concur with this gent - some great moves going on there.

Eirik Kildal

This is so beautiful! 🙏 Upcoming Saturday lesson?

Gert De Groof

Oh lovely, been watching those for a while too, is it a Delphina? Sounds great. In my profession we know that a great musician only needs a great mic to sound good on record, hereby case in point.

Jodok

Superb sound, dry, but not brittle. Great! a very good investment!

Kim Quick

Which model is the new mic a Edwina or Delphina ? It sounds great.

Mike Schaefer

Great sound. A friend of mine heads up a local bluegrass band and uses two of these for their live setup, with excellent results.

Bill Braaten

Wow 🍺 have to agree great lesson very beautiful

Ronald Zimmer

Wow, really great mic, a great guitar and great playing! Tabs coming Alex? Love the tone of that B-25, I do have my eye on a few up for sale :)

Chuck Alfonzo

Truly beautiful. I think this was the version Evelyn Draper was thinking of when telling Clint / Dave to Play "Misty" for Me...

Pinchshot

Hi Alex can you please check your email. I'm trying to schedule another lesson. Thanks

Alex Farran Guitar

😅 Damn, every time I post a video of me playing candidly, I just go and make more work for myself don't I!? .. had a few requests to turn this into a lesson already, so no doubt I'll end up transcribing it for that ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

I've yet to try it with vocals and guitar together, but will get a chance this weekend. Looking forward to it!

Alex Farran Guitar

Sorry, I'd left it out of the title accidentally (added it now).. it's the Edwina model.

Alex Farran Guitar

I agree buddy, has a nice dry quality without being too mid-forward and congested sounding. Certainly has it's own unique flavour amongst my mic collection.

Alex Farran Guitar

It's the Edwina, and I'm really happy with it so far. Has a dry, natural quality to it without sounding too mid-forward, congested or boxy.

Rick Smith

Picks up the tone of that guitar impeccably, beautiful clear reproduction, Great Playing Great tune. Midweek Bonus!

Rob Zohrab

Sounds great! Beautiful playing! Inspires me to pickup the guitar!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi mate, I’m currently taking a bit of time off from teaching online. I did send a newsletter type of email out to everyone who has ever booked one.. perhaps it ended up in your junk/spam folder. I’ll resend it. I’ll also be sure to email everyone again when the booking calendar re-opens. 👍🏻

John Seebach

Sounds wonderful. I've used one of their Louise mics for years as the vocal / solo instrument mic for a bluegrass band and I think it works very well. Love the playing here.

tyler taube

I haven't really explored mics yet as I play mostly in a small room so my question may be too basic but is this primarily for recording purposes or would you run it through something like a small fishmann on an acoustic without a pickup to play live?

Alex Farran Guitar

Very cool John, those ones look great too. Looking forward to seeing this this works in a group at some point too.

Alex Farran Guitar

Personally I’m using this just for home recording.. but, they are very good for live use too. They’re kind of known for how well they balance multiple complex sound sources with surprisingly good feedback suppression.

John Canton

Sounds Great Alex. I see Why you had to have it. A Lesson on this Song, Please?
