Guitar Rambles with Rosie #2: Tone Talk!

Comments

Esgi...sg

Morning brother, thanks for the chat, enjoyed it while putting the tidy on the shop 🙏🏼

Ronald Zimmer

Alex, your insight is always much appreciated. I have a lot of the same pedals, guitars and amps and it’s reassuring to know that I’m on the right path. Your advice on how to set up specific tones is very helpful 🙏🏼

Ron Bogdanoff

Love you sharing your thoughts on your walks with Rosie. Do you encounter any whippets on your walks? Those fields look like a good place for whippets to run if it is allowed.

Michael Friedman

Rambles with Rosie has a ring to it. We don't even need the guitar, just the hang is fun!

Zach Enlow

looking like a nottingham Chad in that thumbnail! ;) And, this was a fascinating video because of all the knowledge here

Tom

Rosie is adorable. You live in such a lovely place.

Tom

Alex, when you are playing solo jazz chord melody through a tweed do you go for reverb or just run it dry?

Sean

What a beautiful little slice of countryside. It looks very similar to where I grew up here in Maryland. And yes, more gear talk, tone talk, and Rosie walks please. It's always interesting to hear you talk about all the tertiary stuff with playing guitar and being a musician.

Eirik Kildal

Very interesting tone talk Alex! I will definately change back to Pyramide Strings on my Nachocaster. By the way, I played your version of People Get Ready in my daughters wedding last Saturday. I was so nervous but I must say I nailed it! 😎 Actually a bit proud🙏

Jonathan Fowles

Great video. Do you ever run two amps at once, say a tweed and a blackface to have the best of both worlds, or run stereo etc…? Or perhaps that goes against your ‘keep it simple’ ethic?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks buddy! I used to do that quite a lot, especially on large stages. It sounded fantastic! I had someone else carrying my gear back then so it wasn’t too painful on my back! 😅 But nowadays I go for practicality, and like to grab n’ go. 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Wow!! 🤩 Congratulations Eirik!.. that’s incredible! Well done my friend! 👏🏻🍻 And yes, I’ve not found anything that better suits the Nacho than those Pyramid strings. Nacho himself goes for those also.

Alex Farran Guitar

Yes! We know a couple of whippets round here.. lovely dogs! My partner really wants to get one.. or an Italian greyhound! I keep telling her we need more land first! 😅

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah thanks buddy, glad you liked the chat! Haha it’s a good name for a series right?! 😅

Rob French

Thank you for your thoughts and Churchillian wisdom ("move past these things with stoicism" 😆). As a player and amp tech, I keep a Boss EQ pedal on each of my boards for perfectly clean boost when needed. Just enough to bring a tele signal up a bit, similar to a humbucker, with the bonus that you can pull the high frequency back a little bit to compensate, as you mentioned. Additionally, on tweed amps, the EQ pedal can be your friend by allowing you to drop down some of the mids a bit and give a little more black/silver- panel style tone and reduce mud at higher volumes. It's important to remember that the tone stack in an amp is doing essentially the same thing- shaping the signal by reducing specific ranges of frequencies.

Alex Farran Guitar

I use a small amount of reverb.. usually just a touch of spring reverb from the amp or a Strymon flint pedal. I also add a touch of room reverb in Logic if it’s a solo guitar.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Sean, glad you enjoyed it! I enjoyed filming it! Glad you also feel some relation to the setting too 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Great point Rob, you can do so much with an EQ pedal. I used to always have one on my board as a clean boost too. Nowadays I do always have a Boss EQ in my gig bag just incase the venue isn’t co-operating acoustically!

Rick

I have a G&L ASAT with rosewood finger board that sounds and plays beautifully. The neck is a little thin ,when my hand fatigues I switch to 335 or my inexpensive Squier Tele with beautiful honey colored baseball bat neck & hum bucker at neck.Great $300 axe.Amps help considerably! Love the beautiful talking tour! Here in Sonoma County Calif,(wich once was the egg capital of Cal),similar scenery with lots of derelict chicken coops! Hills here are a little taller. Thanks Alex

Rick

I also use 5/64-4/64" meant to mention

Gordon Lambert

for my Nacho- Stringjoy pure nickel round wound Broadways 10-46. I also did a switch out of saddles to the Joe Glaser GrooveMaster antique brass….I can go back to original rounds but the intonation of the groovemasters is a real difference.

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah yes, I love those strings too.. I have them on my old es330 and they bring out so much of the woody character of that guitar. 👌🏻 Not seen those saddles you mention, but the intonation is spot-on with the stock saddles on my Nacho 🥳

Frederick

Really enjoyed the countryside walk video on gear & tone, Alex\! Seems we’ve got some common ground — although you’ve definitely got the edge on guitar\! 😂 I’m not quite accomplished yet, but I do love a country walk with my two Labradoodles\. 🐕🐕🎸Frederick

Richard King

I really enjoyed that. Lovely scenery and advice. Interested to find out that I use the same setting on a deluxe reverb and a 5e3 clone

Sava Kalbachou

Love the format of these videos where you casually talk about music, gear, and life stuff! I really enjoyed listening to your ramblings during my daily walk, haha. It was also great to learn a bit more about your background, not to mention the beautiful countryside views! Please keep them coming! These vlogs are a great addition to your lessons and make for such an easy listen.

Great talk Alex, thanks! I totally agree about the tonal signature of the Telecaster vs Strats etc. I've been a Tele play forever, with occassional detours into Les Paul. Recently I've been trying both a Strat and a Jazzmaster which has been really fun ... and yet I always end up back with my Tele :)

Alex Farran Guitar

I'm with you Nick!.. I always end up back at the tele! I'm itching to get hold of a nice old Jaguar soon though.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Sava, really happy you enjoyed these videos! I've filmed a few more over the past couple of days so will be releasing them soon too.

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha I did give it a go for a while, but I feel naked with one as emphasised as this! 🤪

Alex Farran Guitar

Aw that's nice to hear Frederick.. hard to beat a simple walk with a furry friend!

Alex Farran Guitar

Those are fantastic guitars! Man, Sonoma looks incredible.. would love to walk those hills.

nick kizirnis

i'm looking forward to hearing it when it happens! I just had my old Twin updated (neodymium speakers, cleared out the cobwebs) and have been really thinking about a "less is more" pedalboard (but I still have 3 drives ha ha) for it now that I can almost carry the amp up the stairs :)

Michael Hurley

ok I feel like I owe you an actual guitar-related comment, so: 69 drip-edge deluxe reverb, 69 telecaster
