So, you've diligently learned all of your triad shapes across the fretboard.. but now what?! In this Spaghetti-Western tinged blend of Desert Americana and Blues, (with a little Cuban vibe thrown in for good measure), I'll show you just how much you can do with those humble little shapes. From simple ideas that seem almost too obvious to actually work, to more sophisticated ideas that require some out of the box thinking.. we'll assemble a serious arsenal of options when it comes to playing over common chord progressions like this.

The accompanying lesson materials are as vast as the scope of this lesson;

Transcription of my entire opening performance (with real audio embedded for those of you with Guitar Pro software

Tabbed out triad and scale roadmaps

Here I am having my coffee reading the tabs like it's the morning newspaper haha

GoofyRaf

Already love it 😂

Uwe

Coming back to triads ober and over I deeply appreciate this one. Thanks Alex

Alex Farran Guitar

That's THE way my friend, every time you revisit, you'll bolster your knowledge and push them to the next level!

Larry Coelho

Great triad excursion. I like the surf-desert esque feel. Thanks for the lesson. Always appreciated 👏

Rick

Knowledgeable and truly enjoyable lesson! Lots to work on.Beautiful looking and sounding Novo, great pickup/trem set up. Does the neck feel more jazzy like a Gibon then a slim tele?

Philip R

Excellent as always, Alex!

Tom

The triad workout from which all others will be measured. I've been looking for this workout for a long time. A follow up on covering generalizable thoughts (actually intervals) for connecting notes would be an easy lesson for you and a year of joy for many of us. Thanks again Alex!

Frank Messa

Thanks Alex! This one looks like so much fun. I can't wait to get started.

Minstrel atHome

Hi Alex, I love the sunburst of your Novo 🤩. Is that the standard 3 tone burst ? And many thanks for this lesson, a lots of good ideas to add in our playing, as usual !

Timothy Daniels

You would have been a perfect music director for David Lynch films. Dark and edgy!

jimmyh79

Excellent Alex. Been following your channel on YouTube for a while and now a member on Patreon. Love your lessons. So much to learn and great content.

Rob

The sun is shining, warm and beautiful. Your lesson has made it even brighter and clear. Thank you so Alex for sharing your soul. Peace. Rob.

Ran Bush

I'm hearing this as music for a future Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez movie. Very Tejano / Surf !

Jodok

Once more: Great lesson! Thanks. And in my inner echo chamber The Doors play "Love Street"...

Gert De Groof

Hey Alex, great fundamental lesson. And while I feel that I have most of my triads down, I also feel that I somehow still feel I'm lacking in targeting specific notes of the chord at the right time. So I wonder, do you have some tips or specific excersises to practice targeting those specific notes I guess on the first downbeat of the measure...to really get it into my system? One excercise I try to do is just playing constant 8th notes, only chord tones. Or if you still feel like elaborating even further on the topic in that regard in one of your next video's, maybe more people will benefit from it, or else it's just me :-)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Rick! The neck is medium/chunky I’d say. Right in the middle ground there 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks mate! Yes, I believe they call it the 64’ sunburst or something like that. Apparently modelled on a favourite old Jaguar of his.

Agustin

This is exactly what I wanted rn!

Mark

Hi Alex, recent subscriber here. Your lessons are so informative, working through them has really increased my confidence navigating the fret board. Your lessons expand the student’s tool box rather than just teaching songs or licks. For instance, this one, using the Andalusian cadence, has really helped me understand what’s happening in Sultans of Swing instead of just playing in verbatim.

Sean

I don't know if the subtitles are auto generated or not, but during your opening performance they simply said, "Heat." Over and over again. I thought it was appropriate and that you should know ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the kind words Mark, I hadn't even twigged that it's the same kind of progression to Sultans of Swing! 🤪 Glad the lessons are helping buddy :)

Frank Griffen

Just love the sound, awesome lesson. Thank you.

Julie Altnether

Hiya, Alex! I took a few months off due to some busy scheduling, but I'm sure glad I'm back on your Patreon! This is a fantastic lesson! I'll be utilizing some of these ideas this month in my projects! Thank YOU!!

Sean

It’s great to see how limiting the pallet of options forces creativity. I’m enjoying this lesson. I listen to bands like Big Lazy and their Spotify Radio which throws up some cool listening. What are you listening to Alex that inspires this vibe?

Arthur

How did u get that sound?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Arthur, just the guitar, into the Strymon el Capistan for a very subtle bit of delay, then into the deluxe reverb amp with some reverb. You just cannot beat the simple stuff 👌🏻

Ian Cowan

Brilliant. I've had a forced hiatus for a year due to work... and my first visit is back to here. I've got 6mths to get my arthritic fingers back in shape...they need the exercise..and no better workout than Alex provides. Cheers.

Alex Farran Guitar

Great to have you back Ian, very glad you’re on the road to rehabilitation. Take it easy my friend 🙏🏻

Bruce Arthur

been waiting for this one. Great!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Sean, that's so true.. limitation breeds creativity for sure. Funnily enough, I really don't know of any groups that play this kind of stuff! I think of this style as just a huge blend of bits and bobs I've picked up and heard over the years. I'll check out Big Lazy though, always nice to hear others doing this type of thing!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Julie, very glad to have you back onboard my friend! 🙏🏻🧡

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi mate, I think your exercise of consistent eight notes, and consciously targeting a chord tone on the downbeat, is really the best way to practice it. Using jazz progressions for that stuff is the way forward. Also, try it in a blues context where you use pentatonics, mixolydians etc but target a chord tone on the downbeat of every new chord.

David Blanche

I haven't dived into this yet, but I love the sound. And you have a NOVO! I love these Guitars, I now own two of them, An Idris HH and the Serus j . I had to share that with you. Ok let me get with this!

Alex Farran Guitar

Great stuff mate, glad to meet a fellow Novo fan! I've not tried the Idris, but I'm sure it's killer!

Anders Eliasson

Lovely. Another one for the saved folder where all the things I didn't know I wanted to learn are hidden. Its kind of stressy after 50 years of playing music to find out how much you want to learn. :-) I smile when I visit your site.

Alex Farran Guitar

Aw thank you my friend, I'm glad you have some inspiring things to be working on! I'm learning every single day, and it'll never stop. That's what motivates me to keep ploughing on. 🙏🏻
