Patreon member Sean asked a great question about the harmonic minor scale, and how/why it can be used over a minor 6th chord.. even though the scale degrees would suggest a clash might occur. Here are my thoughts and findings on this, and other related (and unrelated), matters as Rosie and I explore the local countryside.

Any questions on this subject? Or questions for future rambles? Let's get a dialogue going in the comments below..

Yessssss. Minor chord vocabulary. And yes, the walks are a wonderful way to pass the time thinking into music with you. A few years ago I would have been lost in all this, now I’m happily hunting through the sonic woods….

I really enjoy these walks & talks Alex. I find myself ‘overthinking’ a lot when playing. So listening to how you approach certain things seems really useful. In a certain way it might even teach me more than your regular YT lessons. So keep walkin’ 🙏❤️

Here we are … When you came up with this, by the way were inspiring, triad lesson over a minor chord sequence, I got struck immediately. Gosh, again this #7 wich is in my mind heavyly colliding with the natural 7 in the parent scale. My ears arentotally fin with this touch of harmonic minor, but my head hurts a little whil thinking of it. So your thoughts shared while walking Rosie eased this pain at least some part of it. I like your sharing walks very much. Special Thanks for this one.

I can’t get enough of these Rambles with Rosie!! Thank you for sharing your incredible wisdom and insights! Plus the beautiful Rosie!

"Aural fluff", love it lol. Thank you for answering my question! I really appreciate the deep dive too, it definately makes more sense now. Especially about the IV chord. I realize now that I don't consider the functions of the chords in a progression enough, or rather I was thinking too much of the relation of the chords to the scale if that makes sense. I definately now have a bit more context within which to play around. Thanks again!

Frank Griffen

Interesting visually and aurally - thank you.

What a great trick enclosures are, once you see the patterns for each cord improvising becomes much easier. It enables us to get beyond that Pentatonix scale. Thanks Alex for turning me onto this. I hope everybody catches on. It’s a lot of fun.

That’s so nice to hear buddy, thank you for the kind words! 🙏🏻

Thank you my friend, I’m so glad you enjoy these casual little ramblings! Rosie is a sweetie 🍬 🐶

My pleasure Sean, I’m glad it shed some more light on the subject for you! Thank you for the great question! 🙏🏻

These walk & talk are great and I appreciate your advice on how to experiment around differentials scales and what notes are important to land on. You mentioned that playing over a static chord might be a future topic—that’s a great idea. I don’t know if The Meters is your thing, but it would be interesting to hear how you’d play over the C9 in "Cissy Strut."

Ron Culbertson

Is there a way that we can communicate with other students in your program. A chat box or something where we could send recordings of our playing and share them what we’re doing with the lessons

Johan

Yeah, minor vocabulary might actually be a larger pool than dominant vocabulary. From Bach to bop. Fun topic Alex.

Alex Farran Guitar

“From Bach to Bop”.. now there’s a killer lesson title! 👌🏻🤪

Alex Farran Guitar

I LOVE the Meters and will definitely do a video on that topic soon. Thanks for the reminder! I shall start putting a backing track together 😅

Johan

It’s yours.

Thanks for posting this Alex. Not only did I enjoy going with you and Rosie on your walk after a tiring day at work, but what a pretty place! Some of those shots of they sky are amazing and beautiful (like the thunderstorm in the background sky I think at the point where you joked about fearing the person riding by on a bike). Listening to you discuss things I want to know more about and understand better was like an extra special bonus❤️ I hope you do more of these.

Alex, very educational talk. I love it so much. I’m a cook and I totally get the food and music comparison. I’m just at the point where I can’t quite get everything out really need to book a lesson maybe thank you so much for your hard work.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Ted, wish I had your cooking abilities! ;) Funnily enough, I'm currently taking my first ever break from teaching, but will let everyone know when the next term opens up for booking!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Katie, I'm so glad you enjoyed coming along with us through the local countryside! Many more of these videos to come!
