How many songs should you know off by heart? How long should you be able to play for before running out of ideas or pieces? Me and Rosie answer those questions and much more as we test out the new camera in the English countryside.

Please post a classical lesson some time?

David Lockwood

Very interesting talk about Repertoire. There was a time when I could play about a dozen songs and that was my limit. Never got beyond that point. I let them all go to concentrate on learning and technique. Now I can do about 3 different arrangements of yours, but I’m hopefully building. 🙈. Very interesting history not too dissimilar to my own in some ways. Lovely area to live from what I can see.

That's great David, you're working up a solid repertoire as we speak! Glad you enjoy the countryside as much as I do!

Alex Farran Guitar

Sure thing! I might give that a go over the next few weeks in fact.

Hello Alex, I again enjoyed this video with you and Rosie, working towards some type of repertoire and your comments definitely inspire to spend the necessary time and effort to achieve, thanks for taking the time to do these videos.

Tom

Always good to see you both Alex! Great topic. I have four sets but I get a bit tired singing for two hours. The chord melody is a savior :) I love your jazz standards and they fit well into my blues sets. Any news on Wine and Roses? No rush because I know they are a great deal of work.

Tom

Fingerstyle Blues Sets: Keep on Truckin Mama, Step It Up and Go, Layla, Sittin On Top of the World, Fishin Blues, You Can Love Yourself, Nobody Loves You When You Are Down, Walkin Blues, Lazy Bones, Hesitation Blues, You Gotta Move, Police Dog blues, Goin Down the Road feelin Bad, Let Us Get Together, Mean Ol Frisco, Come Into My Kitchen, Hey Hey etc etc

Tom

So more jazz material will fill out my Big Bill, RJ, Fred Mc. pre war sets. It goes over well because not many people know it but it is tough to get NEW gigs describing the material. Once in I can re-book. Slide material goes over well with lay listeners. I noticed you have an M1 National, my favoriet guitar.

I never noticed this before and I think it is the videos where you're not wearing a hat. But you have got a serious Robert Duvall vibe going. May he R.I.P. Two of his best roles were Detective Tom Spellacy in True Confessions and Augustus McCray in the mini-series based upon Larry McMurtry's novels Lonesome Dove. I think the movies he made in the early 1970's would put him at about the age you are now. Of course the Godfather movies, Apocalypse Now, etc., may be more famouse You could be accused of looking like less ruggedly handsome men. ... Oh yea, set list, I'll get on that. Sorry for the detour.

DENNIS CHUGH

I came along for the discussion. Appreciate your insight and thoughts....and Rosie.

Hi Alex I remember seeing the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1968 in Toronto. They played for 3 1/2 hours with a long break and they didn’t run out of songs. Mind you they did a 30+ minute version of of East-West, their epic jam piece. Half the audience was passed out or asleep by the end of the show.

Rick

Love the chat ,the countryside and Rosie.Your lessons give us all endless possibilities and directions to really grab the music and run! One of our best U S guitarists Greg Kock is playing Birmingham Friday and Sheffield Saturday. Kind of Hendrix-Zeppelin including true American gibberish :D a fun and funny Dude. The Kock Marshall Trio from Wisconsin. Some of your students might be interested.

Interesting about your youth in Cotgrave, people in the states don't know much about those times. There is a song by DJ Nightmares on Wax '70s 80s' that makes reference to those times check it out if you don't know it

tyler taube

If you only play obscure songs people don’t know when you make a mistake nobody will notice! 🤣 How do you go about creating a set list? Are you thinking about rotating between different keys, tempos, just do what you want? I’d love to work up to a small open mic

Johan

I swear my brain is broken. I forget songs if put away too long. I do feel I re-learn them faster and faster though.

Rick

Everybody should do Johnny b Good :D

Some Bach would be great. I have learned a few pieces in the past. One thing I find annoying about classical scores or tabs is the lack of chord indicators, especially when there are a lot of single note lines. Still makes it so much easier when you are thinking about what the underlying progression is,

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure Frank! ..still picking out photos for that artwork btw ;)

Frank Griffen

Great, send as many as you can - when you can - thank you,

Frederick

Thanks!Do so love Tom Waits your comment made me laugh. What a show man I had to question who helped him to write those songs. As for play for hour no problem can take one piece of music play top to bottom then side ways seem to get innovative along the way.Live in close quarters and play a telecaster with a blues junior , the police haven't come to my house so far.Im impressed Rosie knows left and right Ive got some work to do.

Love the post Alex. And the English countryside. So relaxing. Spent a lot of work hours at RAF Feltwell (Thetford). Loved the surrounding villages of Ely, Brandon, Bury St Edmonds, etc. Was lucky to stay in Cambridge most of the time while working. Had arthritis surgery on my left thumb so no playing for another 6 weeks lol. But love listing to your lessons and posts. Keep up the amazing work!

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh wow, that's very interesting Richard. Cambridge has some beautiful scenery for sure. Hope the recovery goes well mate! 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha glad you enjoyed that Frederick! A tele and a Fender amp.. what more could a man need!? Sounds like you're enjoying your playing, and that's so good to hear! 🙏🏻

Zohar

Such a great format Alex. Loved hearing about the surrounding villages and history. Made me think of Ken Loach's Kes and Orwell's Road to wigan pier. Different times an locations, similar plights.

Alex Farran Guitar

Kes!.. wow, that's a callback to my childhood, blimey! Never read Road to Wigan Pier.. will add it to my list! Great comment my friend!
