Today we learn Chet's iconic vocal solo from this great old jazz standard. There's so much vocabulary to lift from this short improvisation. His phrasing and note choice are sublime throughout. Most of my favourite jazz solos are not guitar solos, but trumpet or saxophone solos. It's a great exercise to try and transcribe these sounds and "guitarify" them. You'll learn so much by getting out of your comfort zone, and encountering a few awkward fingerings and troubleshooting your way to a playable piece!

As well as learning my arrangement of his solo, we'll also spend some time discussing some nice ways to play the chordal accompaniment for it. A jam-packed lesson for sure! ;)

I thought of this as an example of a guitarist Jeff Beck playing a vocal line performance that contains so much expression, and with many pitch changes ! Original song Nadia; Nitin Sawhney (composer - guitarist and keyboards from UK) sung by Swati Natekar. Nadia translates as River …. The speaker is a young woman who can't get to her lover because the river stands between them and keeps rising. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1-jdkSJstdw&ra=m Jeff Beck playing the vocal line on a Stratocaster with vibrato and is just amazing to capture the essence ! There are several versions of him, filmed live performing this. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vcv93iKvGrA&list=RDvcv93iKvGrA&start_radio=1&pp=oAcB&ra=m

or perhaps Joel Paterson, who is also a great player

Your lessons are always chock full of usable and elegant moves. Thank you.

Joel Paterson was great! Julian Lage was bussy doing other concerts:-)

I live in Chicago and am lucky to be able to see Joel regularly in smaller venues, and with a variety of bands.

Something that Joel and our professor Alex have in common is that their playing is elevated by their reverence for authenticity.
