Learn jazz; Georgia on My Mind - Ep1; chords & melody (Guitar lesson)

*Lesson materials for Episode 1 available at the link below, (or included with my Patreon); https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/cxfhpw **I also now have a Patreon! (scroll down to read about it) Episode 1 of 3 in a series focusing on the jazz standard; Georgia on My Mind - written back in 1930 by the great Hoagy Carmichael In this first part we focus on playing the basic changes using authentic, 3 note chord voicings and spread triads. We then learn to play the basic melody over these changes.. (a looper will come in handy for practicing this). All of this will get you feeling confident and familiar with the tune.. an essential step in preparing for the next 2 episodes where we will focus on making our own beautiful chord melody and finally tackle improvising solos over these chord changes. I would highly recommend downloading the lesson materials provided at the link above.. all of the topics covered in this lesson are typed up nice and neat and provided in both guitar pro and PDF formats. Having these to hand whilst following along with the video will certainly make things much easier to absorb. I have also included a backing track to practice over, as well as a recording of a single playthrough the basic melody. Please do go back and check out my previous lesson on triads, and 3 note voicings if you’d like to know more about the chord shapes we’ve chosen in this video.. https://youtu.be/fvvIc93f-EU Thanks for watching and please do leave a comment down below, and if you could hit the like button and subscribe to my channel, that would really be so appreciated. After many months of people asking, I've finally taken the plunge into starting a Patreon!.. I will be posting there very regularly, making exclusive content and lesson materials for supporters. I thought I'd keep it simple and just have 1 tier to avoid any confusion! Hi Alex. I just joined. I like your approach. Very understandable and clear. Dean

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much my friend, very happy to have you here with us! 🙏🏻

Gert De Groof

Hello Alex, also just joined. Your video’s are always so packed with insights it’s crazy. Particularly like your approach starting from actual songs. I think that’s the only way to really internalize all the theory and shapes stuff. And knowing songs is actually what I’ve been missing coming from a more rock/riff based approach. Looking forward going through your content. Take care.

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah thank you so much Gert! I really appreciate the feedback. Very glad to hear you’re enjoying my process. Much more to come! Welcome aboard my friend, very glad to have you here with us 🙏🏻🍻

Stephen Kaplan

Hi Alex I'm a new member in New Jersey USA. Would you consider doing a lesson on Nuages specifically on the harmonics section of Django's lead. I can't even begin to figure out how it's done.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Stephen, that's a fantastic solo, but not one I plan to cover any time soon unfortunately. I did a video cover of it around 10 years back though where you can see how that harmonics section works to some extent. If you'd like to book a one on one coaching session on it over Zoom, we can do that (and you'll get a hefty discount as a Patron too!)

John Petitt

Alex, I just began playing this with a couple of friends. Great lesson. Would you mind doing a lesson on Bye Bye Blackbird?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it! Sure thing, I’ll put that on the list. I quite often play that one in the Chet Atkins/Tommy Emmanuel style 👍🏻

James Cordeiro

Just found your channel Great stuff! Do you have a section on Patreon where you review jazz chords and scales?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you James. Check out the “theory and fundamental” collection of lessons on my Patreon page. You’ll find something in there called “jazz survival guide”. And “chord inversions”. I’d recommend those to begin with.
