Gert De Groof

So beautiful! But you got me sweating here…I’m seeing stars on the 13’s and 9’s and 11’s. I got the three note voicing and melody down, but this chord melody is going to take me some work…I understand what you’re saying, but don’t have the voicings down yet. I have to pause the video every chord 😅. Too bad there is no 10 or 30 second rewind button when watching through Patreon…

Gert De Groof

Never mind that last remark, I can of course just open it in YT.

Gert De Groof

Thanks btw for that tip on the Gbmaj7 voicing in the alternate ending, always avoided this because flattening the middle finger always messed things up. Using the tip of the middle finger to fret both strings works as a charm!

Alex Farran Guitar

Awesome!.. glad you got on okay with that!.. it’s a beautiful voicing for sure 👌🏻

Gert De Groof

Score Correction (I think) in bar 7. The D7(b9) has a C# on top instead of a C.

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah I see.. so, I actually prefer it with the C# and that’s how I intended it.. but in my performance I accidentally went with the “safe” option. I decided to leave it in the score as an optional thing for the player to decide. Which do you prefer the sound of?.. I like the C# voice leading into the D on top of the Gm7 in the next bar. But it’s kinda spicy 🔥👌🏻 Thanks for the message buddy.. do let me know if you find any other anomalies!

Gert De Groof

Yeah, it does actually sound cooler with the C# leading into the D, I agree! Would that give it a different chord name instead of the D7(b9) or diminished. It’s more like half diminished inversion of Gm? Or am I overthinking?

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s a good question!.. a dominant 7 with a b9 and a major 7th on top is gonna end up with a hideously complicated name.. here’s where it becomes useful to simply call it “D7alt” 😆👌🏻

Gert De Groof

Right, got it. Altered chords are my main challenge at the moment. Still ‘drilling’ inversions of 7 chords actually. Thanks for clarifying Alex, have a nice day!

Alex Farran Guitar

Nice one Gert!.. honestly, when it comes to alterations, the best thing you can do is trial and error. Train your ears so that you can trust them.. start with a three note voicing of a dom7 and add one alteration to a higher string and practice voice leading down or up to the “I” chord.

Gert De Groof

Good tip! Would Starting out from the 4 note dom7 voicings be equally good?

Alex Farran Guitar

I’d go three note voicings for sure. That way you can add altered extensions easily rather than having to adapt a bigger voicing by replacing a note or ending up with an awkward fingering

Gert De Groof

Ok, it’s that I know my three note 7 voicings on the lower string sets, but now I’ve come to think about it, not so much on the highest string set…should I start from the major triad and replace the root with the b7 then or look more into open voicings?

Gert De Groof

Off course, I know those, got a little confused on focusing on the higher stringset. I thought I might have been missing some voicings. Adding extensions on top of the voicings I know, gotta get to work! Thanks again Alex, really appreciate your time.

Alexander Eichmann

It's so hard to keep up with all the new lessons you post, knowing there are so many unique hidden gems in your old lessons. So grateful to have you as a teacher, with all that lesson materials! I think that the content is already enough to last a lifetime and yet I discover new things every time!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Alexander, I really appreciate your comment and I’m so glad you feel that you always have something inspiring to work on here! 🙏🏻

Tom

Alex, I am new and I am just over the moon with what you offer and as a retired teacher I am very impressed with your pedagogy. I just saw your Christmas tunes and albeit, belated I am so sorry for your loss. My past animals continue to accompany me through my years and I often think of our reunion.

Alex Farran Guitar

Wow thank you Tom, that really means a lot to me 🙏🏻 Very glad you enjoy the catalog of lessons here.. and soooo many more to come! I’m with you on that last point too.. I do feel that Louis is with me very often.
