“Dead and Lovely” - Tom Waits/Marc Ribot (+ my own improvised solo!) Gibson es125 Jazz noir

Click here to purchase my complete transcription for this awesome solo!.. https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/stdfe I originally did a video on this great solo almost 10 years ago!.. I decided it was about time to revisit and try to really nail the tone of the original recording in finer detail. As with the video from 10 years back, once Marc Ribot’s solo finishes at the 40 second mark, I do a little spot of improvisation. It’s impossible to resist having a crack at playing over these lovely chord changes! If you’re interested in my approach, please comment down below and I’ll consider doing a video breakdown with some tips and tricks for playing in this style. This is super cool. I love it. I have a few questions. Is this in the key of C minor? Are there scales or modes I could practice that work for this tune and key? Just trying to deconstruct the song so I can make up my own solos. Thank you.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Randy, very glad you enjoyed it! I would recommend practicing the arpeggios for each of the chords in the progression.. it’s best to think of chord tones and playing over the changes as opposed to using a particular scale over the whole thing. With that said, the C minor blues scale will work well over some of it, and the C harmonic minor can sound nice on the G7 chord. I have recently filmed another video about improvising over these chord changes and will be releasing that video soon so hopefully that’ll help too 👌🏻

Thanks for the guidance. I just found your other Marc Ribot video, "Lead Etude in Am" and saw that you explain your process and how to think about the song. That will help me too. Looking forward to the new video. Excellent stuff.

Thank you for dissecting Marc (not actually dissecting "him" as he's still alive and touring new album and all that)

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha thanks for the comment buddy! I just filmed a new lesson on his style that takes things much further.. will be releasing that in a week or so 👌🏻

I can't stop to play it! and the second part is quite a challenge for me :) Beatiful solo!

James

Thanks Alex. Anything in Marc Ribot's style is appreciated!

Alex Farran Guitar

Awesome! Funnily enough, I just filmed another video about this playing style where we take things up a notch. Will be releasing that very soon 👌🏻

James

Thanks Mate!

Alex ,you got to say something about what scale you are using over the chords. At least give us a clue.im coming up with the Aeolian over the Cm intro notes fit.Is there a HM minor too..Not sure about the Fm

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey George, you could scrape by with C harmonic minor for sure, as well as some blues scale stuff.. but as always, it's better to outline the chords with arpeggios and aiming for specific intervals rather than using scales.

George Nichols

Thanks for the response greatly appreciate it.Since the song is in Eb the Cm is the C Aeolian that worked for the Cm.I was able to figure out any arpeggios. When i can understand what and where the notes are coming from it is an enormous help because i can use the idea again somewhere else.I went thru a extensive period where i just learned tab without understanding what scale was being playing just memorized the tab notes. .Since i started picking up the caged system i can look at the chord where the chord is on the neck figure out the caged(actually the Edcag) shape that corresponds to the chord and it feels so good to be able to understand what the player was thinking and what scale he used.Of course im still struggling with it . So any tome you can throw a hint say as to a caged position or scale it will help a lot. Thanks again love your work.

Just finished learning this and am very pleased with myself. Started it 2 months ago. Found it quite difficult in places to decipher what was going on despite having both tab and clear visuals. Anyway, thanks again for sharing this really beautiful and interesting solo - I love it!

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah that’s great Carl, thanks so much for sharing your progress with us! I’m so happy you stuck with it and came out the other side.. amazing work buddy 🙏🏻🍻

Darcey

loving your Marc Ribot/Tom Waites stuff mate, how did you learn these? by ear?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks buddy! Yes indeed, everything I do is by ear. It’s how I learned to play. Of course the extra solos at the end are just my own improvisations but yes, for the Ribot solo at the start, it was a case of transcribing it by ear. Something I highly recommend that people practice doing! 👍🏻
