Turnarounds! Blues to Jazz - The Ultimate Guide (Guitar Lesson)

*NEW! Access all lesson materials by becoming a Patreon at the link below for just a small monthly fee!.. https://patreon.com/AlexFarranGuitar If Patreon isn’t your bag, you can purchase the lesson materials for this lesson alone, directly at the link below; https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/yhhzxh Essential chord voicings from triads.. https://youtu.be/fvvIc93f-EU Tri-tone Substituion.. https://youtu.be/Djm-tN43Q2g Turnarounds are a grey area for many players.. never quite sure of what or how they should work. In this video, we look at the typical 2 bar turnaround as found in bars 11 and 12 of a 12 bar blues, or in the final 2 bars of the A section in many jazz standards. We start simple and build things up from there, covering a ton of options along the way. You will leave this lesson with a much deeper understanding of turnarounds and their role within the music. Also remember that these turnarounds function really nicely as intros and outros too! I would highly recommend downloading the lesson materials provided at the link above.. all of the topics covered in this lesson are typed up nice and neat and provided in both guitar pro and PDF formats. Having these to hand whilst following along with the video will certainly make things much easier to absorb. Thanks for watching and please do leave a comment down below, and if you could hit the like button and subscribe to my channel, that would really be so appreciated. David

Great stuff. Many thanks

David Dewees

I will keep coming back to this one. Well done! Great suggestion to revisit and transpose

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks David, really glad you're finding it useful. I feel like this is low-key one of the most important lessons on the Patreon!

Gert De Groof

Such a great lesson Alex. I always struggled with turnarounds, just because of the chord change on every beat I guess. Turning it inside out like this really makes it stick. For me, I find it crucial to always think of the ‘core’ turn around as in I IV I V or I iv ii V, which I guess is what one always should be doing… I will be practicing this for the next few weeks for sure and I wouldn’t mind a nice Joe Pass or Barney Kessel song in the near future as well. Thanks Alex, take care!

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s so good to hear Gert, thank you for commenting. Glad the lesson has helped! I would suggest simplifying even further possibly and thinking of a turnaround as not much more than basically I to V! As a lead player, that’s the first way to learn to outline a turnaround. And sure thing.. Barney Kessel video coming up very soon indeed 😉

Michael

Dude ! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I haven’t been able to get started with jazz because I have had teachers tell me, ‘No there are systems for learning jazz chords. You just have to learn each chord on its own.’

Michael

What I and looking for is a METHOD for learning inversions and the like. Like what you do on the double stop lesson for Star and Motown style. I am brand new so I feel overwhelmed… so I would like to focus on just ONE chord like C and get all the inversions DOWN and then move on.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Michael, really glad you're digging these types of lessons. I'd massively recommend checking out my "jazz survival" guide lesson if you're new to the World of jazz. Method for learning inversions is a video I will make soon. I do show inversions quite often in videos, but I don't have a dedicated "Inversions only" lesson. I'll email some materials over to you to get you started ;)

Craig Brandis

Clear. Concise. Brilliant. Very helpful.

Paul Gringras

Love these ideas. Alex, given the turnaround gets us half way to playing over rhythm changes …it would be great to hear how you would tackle any RC head and solo ideas?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Paul, sure thing, I'll be doing a Rhythm changes video very soon for sure

Paul Gringras

Have you done gospel chord on guitar specifically?

Julian Gross

I have gone back to this lesson many times and it is absolutely solid gold

Minstrel atHome

Definitely a great lesson , Alex, thank you, and of course, always open to learn more Joe Pass’ and Barney Kessel’s inventive turnarounds!

Trey

Hey Alex …Rudy here.. great turnarounds lessons I didn’t know anything about.. thank you! And yes should you have some time and moments to discuss one of Barney Kessels pieces… that be sweet… again thank you for sharing these lessons..

Trey

Oh I’m the same person lol.. Trey (Rudy).. Trey is ok

Chris

Thanks for this, Alex! You know, I've often looked at Jazz as if it was the surface of a beautiful lake. Your lessons have not only got me swimming, but you're teaching me to dive down an explore what's underneath. These turnarounds and your philosophy on them have made me a better player. Thanks again, and please keep it up!

Telmo Mendes

Hi Alex! Could you tell me where is that Barney Kessel video? :) Thanks
