I’ve had a lot of messages enquiring about doing a regular “Q&A” post. I think it’s a great idea and will aim to do one every month or so.

To get the ball rolling, please put your questions in the comments below this post and I’ll make a response video very soon!

Thanks for your support guys, you make this place come to life and I’m so grateful 🙏🏻

Here’s a few from me Alex: What are you thinking about when constructing a guitar solo? Are your initial ideas based on arpeggios or scale or some other framework? Do you have a stock of licks that you can dip into to provide appropriate flavouring depending on the genre? And how do you go about keep it interesting? Are there any resources that you would recommend to viewers interested in building a solid understanding of music theory? What advice would you give to someone looking to get a guitar tone similar to Marc Ribot on Jockey full of bourbon?

Alex Farran Guitar

Fantastic questions Carl, thank you! Will address as many as possible in my response video!

Hi Alex, I would love to know your thoughts on breaking through to the other side with improvisation, so I'm thinking specifically about your approach to taking arpeggios, playing the changes, using the right scales, etc, and making this sound like a coherent voice with a melodic flow and "feel" and not just a block of technical exercises.

Back to yr earlier Billie’s Bounce video - and strumming while muting 2 or 3 strings - basics, I know, but I struggle - is there a knack?

Alex Farran Guitar

Great question Nigel!.. many people have asked about that over the past few months. You’re not alone! I’ll do my best to shed some light on it in my response video 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Excellent question Zachary!.. one I could probably spend days answering! But I shall do my best to come up with something quick and to the point for my response video! 🙏🏻

I suppose I’d ask your approach to your live sound for The Most Ugly Child? Cheers 👍

Hello Alex. What was your path to learning gypsy jazz? a teacher, books, transcribing?

Alex Farran Guitar

Great question mate, I’ll definitely go into a little detail on tone and gear stuff. Thanks for asking 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the question Michael! I’ll go into more detail on this in the response video, but essentially it all came down to lots of transcribing and watching lots of videos of my favourite players; Fapy Lafertin, Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre, Gonzalo Bergara and Stochelo Rosenberg. Also, going to gypsy jam sessions whenever possible! 🍻

Phillip

Hello Alex...Im looking for a simple jazzy rendition to the "Our Gang Theme"

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Phillip, I’m not familiar with that tune but will certainly check it out!

James

Hi Alex. Thanks mate, loving the diverse lessons. Would love to know some of your warm up routines. Particularly fingerstyle. Thanks

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you James, I appreciate that! And great question too, will certainly address that. Cheers mate 🍻

Related to Nigels question on left hand muting - can you go over some right hand strumming techniques, from lite strumming (with a heavy pick), comping, la pulp to tremolo?

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Manfred, will do. You got in just in time.. I’ll be filming my response video today! 🍻
