As far as I’m concerned you may teach us every CC song. Love it.

Alex Farran Guitar

Man, I could very easily have a channel that only teaches CC material! .. maybe a sideline 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Gert De Groof

Question: in the solo, bar 4. Eb9 lick…I recognize the Gm7b5 shape, as well as the Bbm6 shape which are actually the same notes as Eb9. I’m still often confused by this, maybe I’m just overthinking it. You seem to approach it as Eb9. Any suggestions about these different approaches? Same thing in bar 5…

Alex Farran Guitar

You’re on the right track if you can think of it as all 3 things, but I would always name it based on its function and context, so as it’s functioning as an Eb dominant 7th sound here (V/IV), we should think of it as an Eb9.

Gert De Groof

Got it. I think I struggle with this, because I still play/visualize my arpeggio’s starting of the root…hard to get rid of that…

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s a common issue for sure, and something I was guilty of. What helped me was forcing myself to start on say the 3rd, or the 5th or the 7th rather than the root.. also practice them descending from the 3rd, 5th and 7th because of course when you use these shapes in an improvised solo, you certainly won’t be starting on the root each time.

Gert De Groof

Thanks, that would be practicing inversions…have to get on it!

Hi Alex, the chords on solo charts and comping charts are different. It doesn’t help to understand, just for you to know… Excellent lesson anyway, I love it. I think I’ll try to stick to it, and make me a small repertoire from your lessons, to put the usual chords changes and harmony, and all the concepts you show in my personal bag. Thanks for all.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi buddy, I actually include alternate chord symbols for a reason! There are near endless options for voicings and substitutions with this stuff, so for the comping I go with what I would play as a rhythm player. But for the lead, I label things the way you should think of it as a lead player.. ie; the important harmonic elements to outline. Sometimes that may end up being different, but that's at the very heart of how jazz works so best to not avoid it! And yes, making a repertoire of music you can play from memory, no sheet music etc is a powerful thing. To be able to fill say 30 minutes of time with solid performances.. that's the goal 👌🏻

GoofyRaf

Yes ! That make sense, and I love it. I have to look side by side the two sheets, and understand the core chords on solo, and the embellishment or smart moves on comping. Thanks for this smart & jazzy answer 🙏

GoofyRaf

Just wanna let you know I have a lot of fun playing this tune. So melodic. I have it in my ears, soon in my fingers. Love it. Thank you, really.

Hi Alex, great lesson, please do a study on (or a few licks from) Swing To Bop sometime

superclodclod

Thanks for this. I love that you teach the rhythm and the solo!
