One of my favourite modern guitarist, with one of my favourite modern jazz records. This is a huge double album that traverses every corner of the jazz sphere, from old school and trad jazz, to abstract a avant garde jazz. Lovely tones and expressive, characterful playing throughout. And hey, some of the tracks feature Julian Lage on rhythm guitar duties!

Check out Nel's version of the old standard "Beautiful Love" from this record at the link below;

Also check out the song "I Have Dreamed" for some stunning, vocal like guitar playing.. interesting use of a volume pedal and the jazzmaster's brilliant vibrato system.

And the track "It Only Has to Happen Once".. a great, dark, claustrophobic soundscape and some truly inventive guitar parts and tones that sound reminiscent of a spaghetti western on LSD!

And of course, listen to some Wilco to hear Nels in a wholly different kind of setting!

Any Nels fans here?.. let me know in the comments! :)

I listen to "Beautiful Love" very often on Spotify, but I don't think I have listened to the whole album yet... thanks for the pointers! Another Nels Cline song I listen to is "Canales' Cabeza", quite intense but in a good way! (Julian Lage is one of my favourites as well.)

I was also introduced to Nels Cline via Julian Lage, and recently discovered their work together on the Nels Cline 4 album “Currents, Constellations.”

I have limited exposure to Nels music, mostly through Wilco. Incredible, unique guitar voice. When he periodically joins Derek Trucks on stage, it is on another plane.

Ah yes that’s some really great stuff, love the albums they’ve done together 👌🏻

Chad Ashworth

I love this album! I've been listening to Macroscope a lot. An album with Nels and Trevor Dunn. It's an amazing album.

Gideon Marriott

You should never have sold your jazzmaster 😂

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha I do miss it from time to time. Would love to pick up a vintage Jaguar at some point though 😍

Oh yes, I need to revisit that one. I listened to it when it came out but haven’t revisited it much. Thanks for the reminder! 🍻

Chad Ashworth

I did too but I saw some live footage on YouTube and that put it in heavy rotation.

Lindsay Martin

I saw Nels with Wilco, then with Jim Campilongo during the recording of the live album “Live at Rockwood Music Hall.” That was an epic show and I recommend the album if only to hear Jim and Nels cutting on two great tracks. Amazing.

I've not heard this album before and am loving it. I'm a big Wilco fan and sometimes find Nels Cline's solos a bit too erratic for my taste. But this album is just wonderful. Thanks for recommending it.

That's great you saw that show live!.. I have a signed copy of the CD.. my girlfriend picked it up for me after seeing Jim live at Rockwood herself.. great album!

Talent in spades for sure, but if I’m honest I have tried a few times to listen to the album, but inevitably I give up-it’s just doesn’t resonate with me, but I am definitely in the minority!

Michael Franks

I saw him with Medeski Martin & Wood in London a few years ago and he was amazing live.

Michael Franks

It was a great gig at “under the bridge “ in Chelsea which has a great stage and sound system so the sound was very powerful. It certainly was a different experience watching them live compared to just having access to recordings.

This album, along with ROOM and Currents, Constellations make such a great trilogy.

Jerome Oks

This album has a wonderful interpretation of "Beautiful Love" that you thought on a different lesson.

Jerome Oks

oops, you did mention it.
