A thorough deep dive into the vocabulary, note choices and tones of the vintage, early electric guitar blues era. Blues these days is getting too polite for my liking.. let's gradually bring the edge and visceral raw energy back to proceedings!

Recommended listening and gear talk at the end as always!

This time, the backing track is not my own, but one from the Cinelli Brothers. They make some of the coolest, most vintage vibed and authentic blues backing tracks out there! This one is titled "Black Jack" and it's available in this pack; http://www.cinellibrothers.com/store/f2msndgu3f2ybfka02gckmkud21jyn

Yeah!! I have to admit this style is the one I enjoy the most, so thanks for making my weekend happy Alex! Very excited to learn it 🙏👏

David Lemon

Man a backing track with horns, too?! This is going to be really good.

Peter Kelly

Alex, you should have an affiliate code for GuitarPro. After many years of playing and studying the guitar I have only just bought the software specifically so I can follow along and learn your tutorials.

George Nichols

Thank you so much for calling out the Caged positions.

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s good to know Peter, thank you. I’ll drop them an email and see if they’d be up for something like that 👌🏻

Peter Kelly

you can certainly quote my comment in your request

David Lemon

Same here! I never cared much to explore GP until now.

David Lemon

Alex, as you mention in the breakdown, at measure 15 is the B string 12th to 14th hammer-on a double stop that includes the 12th fret E as well for a double-stop? EDIT: I just re-watched the intro performance and it matches the notation.

Peter Kelly

David, I know what you mean. I use Soundslice and have been a member of Truefire since they started so it works great with their lessons. I always had an impression GP was for shredders

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah yes, well spotted. In the performance I did it as a single note as opposed to a double stop.. sounds cool either way.. if I could do it again, I'd definitely go with the double stop! ;)

David Lemon

Thanks. It's funny... I can get easily intimidated by a new piece slightly out of reach (or a lot out of reach), and I think it's a coping thing to think it has to all add up perfectly or I'm not understanding, or I'm lost. When actually it's the blues, and while it's a composition, there are also ideas and concepts here that can have some variation for me to take or leave, to improvise. I don't know if that makes sense.... but thanks for helping me work through this.

Alex Farran Guitar

David you absolutely hit the nail on the head.. when it comes to this kind of blues playing, it's not really about learning the licks note for note, but rather understanding the essence of the idea and the note choices. And this stuff is more about how you "pronounce" the ideas and your command over tone than it is about phrases and stock ideas. So yes, you've got the right approach for sure 👌🏻

Gideon Marriott

That point on bend and vibrato is a masterclass in itself. Thanks Alex!

Thom Osborne

fairly new to GuitarPro... is it worth it? what are the benefits over something like MuseScore?

Peter Kelly

Thom, I've not used MuseScore so I can't comment on your question. I'd recommend starting the 7 day free trial of Guitar Pro, load in Alex's GP file for a lesson you're working on and see if it benefits you.

Thom Osborne

Peter, great, didn't see there was a free trial so will absolutely check it out. thanks

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Thom, it’s far superior to Musescore from a guitar players point of view. I do use Musescore for chord charts at times, but for precision and interactive sheet music, guitar pro is excellent and is what I’ve used for typing out all my sheet music for a long time now 👍🏻

MarkF

This is great not only did we see Louie come out to play we saw and heard some nasty playing. How can anyone not just love listening to that and we can all try to get some of that feel down ourselves thanks to this lesson.

MarkF

Ok you asked for some records maybe these blues players are in my rotation most 1. Muddy Waters “Folk Singer” absolute classic, Jordan Officer (Canadian jazz/blues standout) EP “Victor Sessions” nasty sound and Eric Bibb “Spirit and the Blues” give them a listen thanks

MarkF

Sorry one more Howlin Wolf song “Killing Floor”

Alex Farran Guitar

ah thanks Mark, really glad you enjoyed it!.. Louis says thanks too! ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Mark, some great suggestions there. That Muddy Waters record is one of my all time favourites too! Need to check out more Eric Bibb stuff.. not heart too much! Have seen Jordon Officer too and he's deffo got the style and feel 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

What a song that is! Hard go beat Howlin' Wolf.. certainly my favourite blues singer/frontman.. what a presence that man had! 🙌🏻

Julian Gross

+1 for Folk Singer — incredible

Michael Sosebee

Hi Alex - I know you're going through a difficult time. My heart is shredded with scar tissue over the loss of my special pets (they're all special as they give love unconditionally). I have been working on this lesson for a couple of weeks and I am making real progress. What I want to say: Your lessons start out with inspiration as you play thorough each lick with passion and precision. The rest of the lesson is the hard work that needs to be done to master these lessons. Chicago Blues is the bomb! Take care Amigo!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much Michael, I really appreciate the kind words and I’m so glad you enjoy the lessons so much! I always put my entire heart and soul into these lessons so it makes me happy that they make you happy. 🙏🏻

Dan Hampton

Thanks for the heads up on the tracks ! this is a fun one ! who doesn't love Chicago Blues !!

David Lockwood

This is a gold mine of information. Thank you.

David Lockwood

Really cool lesson Alex Captured the style beautifully. WIP for me!

David Lockwood

Soo good being deep into this deep dive!
