One of the greatest chord melody guitar players of all time, the amazing Johnny Smith. This is his most well known record, and for good reason. Featuring the legendary Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, this album is stunning from start to finish. Those biiiiig stretch chords of Johnny's are truly a wonder!

As well as the title track (linked above), a few of the other standouts on the record would be "Jaguar".. listen to that crazy melody line played so cleanly in harmony between Johnny and Stan!..

Also, the opening track "Where or When" is my favourite take on that particular standard. Again, check out the beautiful harmonies between Johnny and Stan!;

"Yesterday's" .. another stunning ballad, full of incredibly rich voicings and clever internal movement within the chords;

And a couple of tunes that aren't on this record, but are so worth listening to!..

"Lover Man";

"What's New";

"Sophisticated Lady" .. (most intimidating intro of all time?!)..

I can't get enough of Johnny Smith, how about you guys?.. let me know in the comments!

Yup it’s a classic and seems to capture a period in time (maybe a more hopeful time not to be too dramatic)

Ryan Griffiths

This is one of those records that is impossible to get over once you hear it..

A lesson on Tenderly would be amazing mate!

Thom Osborne

Have you listened to the Johnny Smith tribute with Mary Halvorson and Bill Frisell? Wondered what you thought of the use of effects in more traditional compositions?

Hi Alex, I've been working through your Albums of the Week and I love your taste. A great way to keep us inspired and engaged. I've always been a big fan of Stan Getz and his various collabs but this one has somehow passed me by. My favourite has always been the Charlie Byrd version but this is fantastic too! I know you've already got a pretty big list of requests but it would be great if you could one day do a chord melody version of Moonlight in Vermont. Maybe fingerstyle? No rush though, I've got my work cut out with Nuages and after that I'm planning to give your Georgia chord melody a try. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Thans for the comment Steve and sorry for the slow response! I'm currently working on a finger style chord melody for Moonlight in Vermont after seeing this request. Cheers!
