This week we take a deep dive into the Bossanova jazz style via "The Girl From Ipanema". We will break down how to play the chords fingerstyle with the typical Bossa rhythm pattern, as well as learn to play the melody. Get your looper at the ready and become a one-man-band!

Also a good study in 6th and 9th chords!

Alex Farran Guitar

I always played this in Db and there was a couple of little areas that needed attention so I was happy to learn some of your approaches and get my version a little tighter. Thanks just what I needed and never tire of the tune even after playing it for 30+ years! Thanks Alex. (Ps love the nylon the guitar world needs more nylon)

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s great Mark!.. glad you hear you’re enjoying a revisit of this piece 👍🏻 I agree!.. and I’ll definitely be making more nylon string content very soon. Perhaps some classical inspired chord melody or some such 💡

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Peter! Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the link, they sound really great! 👌🏻

Hi Alex, As you said, I studied this piece in F major originally but certainly good to get closer to the original with the 6/9 chords. I'm enjoying all of your posts and the variety as well. Aside from that I'm looking for an expert opinion. One of my students, a professional singer, has been asked to do a Taylor Swift tribute and needs my help. One of her tunes "Red" is confusing, sheet music says key of E but it is leaning towards A lydian. It also is ambiguous it starts on an A chord and the ending chord is B major. Any thoughts would be welcome. thanks, Conrad

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks for the comment Conrad, I’ll have a look at that tune and get back to you later on 👍🏻

It's like you read my mind... I learned this originally in F as well because it works well for a chord melody but these chords are somehow much more melodic in themselves and it's about time I dusted off my looper anyway... Meanwhile I'm still chipping away at Nuages fingerstyle, struggling a bit from measure 21 (at the dusty end of the guitar) but I'll get there in the end. Probably :) The next project I've set my sights on is Georgia on My Mind, but there's so much to choose from it's hard not to get distracted and go into "ooh, shiny!" mode, a big pitfall for me!

Wayne America

I like the prominence of Bossa-styled 6, 9, m9, and 6/9 chords in your arrangement. While we are on this topic, here's another standout tune from this place and time. It first appeared in the classic French-Brazilian film: Black Orpheus (1959) and has been widely covered since (Manha de Carnaval) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-GKRUWRLhU&list=PL3RuFrlES0wMOV1gb4fmFw8PdT1Yp5M8L&index=6 One more song that I want to learn because I have it on both Album (see my album of the week post) and I still have the Laurindo Almeida "Plays Bossa Nova" sheet music book which I bought when I was young. (Samba da Sarah) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31qzEMGYg40&list=PL3RuFrlES0wMOV1gb4fmFw8PdT1Yp5M8L&index=3

Great stuff Wayne, thanks for sharing. I'll check those pieces out for sure!

Alex Farran Guitar

Great stuff Steve! Glad you’re enjoying the lessons! Georgia is definitely another good one to tackle next. Still one of my personal favourites. Glad you’re getting on okay with Nuages too buddy! 👌🏻

Thanks Alex, I signed up on the back of this lesson: clear and concise and great choice of material. Cheers.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Steve, I really appreciate that :) Don't forget to click on the posts here to fully open them up and see the lesson materials downloadable in a zip file ;)

The tune is mostly played in F. Why change key?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey buddy. I do explain the reasoning in the lesson if you’ve watched it? Db is the original key in fact.. listen to the iconic original version by Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz. Also worth watching some videos on the history of the song and how even players like Stevie Wonder will play it in the original intended key of Db when they perform it in Brazil as a sign of respect. 👍🏻

Jordan Zimmerman

What make and model classical guitar are you using?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Jordan, that’s an old Yamaha classical guitar.. a birth year one for me (1985). It’s not the greatest, but does have some sentimental value! 👌🏻
