I think because they were told "I am you and you are me", Johan assumed what happened to Nina also happened to him, but he needed the context so when Nina told him the story, it was easier to hold on to that "memory".

Why do you think johan was like this before? To clarify, there was nothing shown before them arriving at three frogs, those are first memories chronologically. Everything else was after those, like first murders and such, after leaving Czechoslovakia.
