High School DxD is sometimes under-appreciated because of its harem and ecchi tags which are an automatic taboo for a lot of sensitive people out there. That’s unfortunate because DxD is a well written story that has decent character development and world building which is kind of a rarity in the genre. In my opinion it has the perfect blend of comedy, drama, action, fantasy, and of course fan service. I’m glad you’re enjoying the series so far and am looking forward to future reactions.

The thing about DxD is that the ecchiness overshadows the story. Firstly it comes as a whacky ecchi and comedic show but bit by bit the world keeps building, characters keep developing and by the time you realize it you are fully invested and taking the story seriously, because yes, it is serious and has dark tones at times. As a LN reader, this has one of the biggest and richest worlds I've seen in anime, only surpassed by One Piece. So many mythologies, species, powers, factions interacting with each other, everything keeps escalating and the fights and stakes increase in epicness. It is rare that a harem, action animes turns into a shonen, seinen. Fyi, the VA for the crazy priest is the same as Kirito. He does a very good job interpreting crazy characters like this one or in Rezero.

So to reiterate a point I made in my comment from the first episode, High School DxD is an ecchi anime and not a hentai. This means they won't ever show genitals, even if there is a sex scene (not saying DxD has a sex scene, just ecchi anime in general). So plenty of boobs n butts, no dick n balls or vag Also the VA for Freed the priest is Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. You'll know him as the voices of Kirito from SAO, Bell from Danmachi, Inosuke from Demon Slayer, Sora from No Game No Life, and, most relevant in terms of performance, Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti from Re:Zero. I absolutely love when Freed is in a scene cuz it's a role very similar to Petelgeuse in that it feels like Yoshitsugu is just having so much fucking FUN voicing this unhinged character x3

Comparing Highschool DxD as a mix of Konosuba & Fate makes sense. Highschool DxD & Fate are both urban fantasy stories with monsters, magic, & a hidden society with multiple factions (one of which is the church) with an orchestral OST.

For example, Gremory is an actual demon lord (who appears as a beautiful woman), mentioned in the Lesser Key of Solomon, a medieval grimoire dating back to at least 1580. Copies of the grimoire, which include details of the magic circle and ritual needed to summon Gremory and other demons exist, and the text of the grimoire is available online. Feel free to try it and see if it works....

the dub is mostly not as good as the sub, because Japanese voice actors are just on another level. Does not mean dub is bad, just not as good. There are exceptions, but they are just on the same level, never better. (in my opinion)

arguably, akeno is the reason ara ara blew up and became main stream.. like we had ara ara before her.. but she just switched something on in everyone.. but for some strange reason, the Ara Ara stuck, but not the mannerism of her character. she actually says ara ara rather rarely. its more her entire personality that is so down bad.

Youtube can be cut up where as twitch can't. We've already said DB won't be able to be on twitch for that reason but regardless any scene that is questionable would be cut from a YT reaction aswell. Some creators are just lucky and manage to get away with scenes they may not normally should. Take myles doing grave on twitch not something Luke was willing to risk his channel over.

Idk about everyone else but I rewatch this with luke so I see what is my opinion on DxD as an adult. I was 15y in 2012 and 18y in 2015. I am now 28y. Highly curious if I changed and I still enjoy ecchi.

There's tons of ecchi shows in anime. DxD is famous for its pretty decent story for being an ecchi. Its not like the greatest story ever told but its pretty dang good for the genre its in.

18:07 The west have the opposite problem (especially USA, it's just "spreading" to Europe): ultraviolence is ok but somehow anything sexy is a cardinal sin, which is VERY weird. So much that most people don't realize that oddity anymore. The Japanese just draw the line elsewhere, but honestly the extreme opposite (USA) seems weirder to me. I live in France, sexuality here wasn't such a taboo until maybe the 2000s/2010s, it's still not quite like USA today but the influence is here, more puritanism years after years. In the past censorship was pushed by the right, nowadays it's by the left (for different reasons). In both cases it's mostly aimed at sexuality, rarely violence.
