Wow that was amazing.... I have never watch Gintama before, but that episode made me laugh so much, that i had to take a break. My god that was funny! It reminded me of watching Mr. Bean for the first time haha xD It just kept going and kept going, getting worse and worse haha. But i wont start watching Gintama, because i think it will be much better watching with someone els OR as a reacting :) After today i hope you start Gintama after Naruto :)

Thursday was cancelled due to him having covid, will resume as normal next week. Next naruto tuesday is not until June 10th though as we have a Vtuber tuesday this coming week and the 27th will be a gaming stream (ZZZ)

One Piece's G-8 Arc is filler, yes, but it is such a good filler I highly recommend watching it when you eventually get to it again. It is a must watch filler that is beautifully written. To this day Condoriano (Shepherd) is still brought up in conversations and Jonathan shows up as a cameo later in the story, as well as in the movies Stampede and Film Z.

I don't know about you guys, but after Erased I am definitely going to vote for Gintama to be the next one. And if it doesn't win, I'm going to vote for it every opportunity, until it wins. In my opinion, this was one of Luke's best reactions ever.

At this point I feel like it's unfair to Luke if we don't make him watch Gintama, he clearly really wants and is ready for it. Probably one of the best reactions he's ever done. Also, Happy belated birthday :)

Long story short of both replies? He needs to watch these anime first then he can watch gintama: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/34449 Reply 1: Well, Even I after like 700-800 anime, I didn't watched certain "required" anime to be able to watch gintama (here list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/34449) , so I went into it but I didn't enjoyed it because too many moments are: "Idk I don't understand" then it goes to "omg haha" then "what he meant here?" "oh whatever, let's keep going". And it's a laughing confusion fest that after 80 episodes I stopped (the "door to the future" from doraemon I didn't knew about that for example, so the drawer scene didn't feel funny). That is ep 164 but I didn't found it funny (Watched it with luke on ytb). After I DID read the comments and they explained the joke, that was funny and I enjoyed. This is like reading memes of jojo without seeing jojo. Everyone knows that some memes are funny of any show, but if you lack context then many memes are just "meh" or "confusion". Same with gintama.

Reply2: Now this is my opinion as someone who didn't watched dbz,gundam original,doraemon,evangelion. Any reference to any of these It wouldn't land with me 100%. This is a make or break for me in comedies. When the creator of the joke does a joke but only certain groups get it. This is why Grand blue / Kaguya-sama are great because you do not require pre-knowledge. While "Konosuba" you need a few isekai to watch first. If you go and watch luke's reaction to konosuba season 1, you'll see first 6 episodes, he was "confused + laughing", it was relative uncomfortable, but then the show stopped making "isekai trope jokes" and did other types of jokes more "universal", at that point, luke starting to laugh and was funny for him. In the end, a 9/10 comedy, ended up like 7/10 for him. CLEARLY lacking context destroys enjoyment, and can damage the potential of a series when comes to comedy. Gintama has hundreds of episodes and if 25% of the show is confusion and missed jokes and 75% is funny then the score will also be the same a 7.5/10. People don't want him to watch gintama and give it a 7, they basically want him to watch and give it a 9+

Yeah I get what u mean. I found that scene luke laughed a 8/10 in terms of "peak comedy", for luke it was 11/10 clearly. Knowing references for gintama helps a lot to have fun in there.

Madoka Magica is another example of a show where a lack of context lessened his enjoyment of the show. A big part of what made Madoka Magica so popular and memorable was that it took what was a super popular and very formulaic genre at the time and totally subverted expectations and changed things up in a refreshing way. Luke watched it as like his second or third anime, with no context on what a magical girl anime was, and without watching any before Madoka, so he just didn't get what made it special and memorable as a series. Makes perfect sense to me that Gintama fans don't want to see that happen to their show as well.

I watched this for One Piece.... I have never seen Gintama.. I know nothing about it at all... what the hell was that??? I was gonna skip that part of the video but when I skipped forward I had a hard time understanding what I was seeing and after I have context for what I saw I am still just as baffled. Yea gonna have to go watch that now too.

Think of Gintama as 2 anime in 1, there's the random comedic episodes that has a bunch of references of dozens of anime(DB, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach etc.) that you'll be laughing none-stop. Then there's what we call the serious arcs, that are in between the random comedic episodes, while it does have some comedy, they focus more on the serious matter of the story, the world building, every serious arc will have you crying because of something tragic happening, and unlike majority of the anime, there's not a single character that's not important, they play a part in the final arc.

Someone said that you have to watch all of these (https://myanimelist.net/stacks/34449) to watch Gintama, i'd say it's not necessary. You don't have to watch Doraemon, Gundam or Dragon Ball Z, maybe not even One Piece too (although i still want Luke to react to One Piece despite me saying this)). Just saying out of experience, i didn't watch any of those not even JoJo's before Gintama, and got the references just fine because the artstyles is so distinct so you know when it's a parody reference. Not to mention the top translator note saying what the parody is referencing. So if anything maybe (since Naruto, HxH and Jojo's is basically checklisted;) Some more of Bleach and Evangelion and he would be pretty much set to start the Gintama Journey.
