What a ride this has been man, absolute masterpiece of an anime and im glad to have watched it. None of the replacement animes that will be coming up will come near to this show so its really gonna be a while until something truly replaces the spot monster has had imo

AchmodinIVSWE

They could have maybe blamed Johan but since he is in a coma they didn't pursue him.

GreekReactsGR

they cycle repeat it self since they didnt kill Johan he will go back to do his staff until he actually dies

JimenezC

Luke, I think because the white subtitles was blending in the background at the top, you didn't see that Johan was in a Police hospital, meaning he did get apprehended. But as you said, not having Johan handcuffed to his bed was very irresponsible. I think you were also right, he was not in a coma when Tenma came in. Upon seeing the bed empty, my theory is that Johan is going to search for his mother's whereabouts , since she is someone I think Johan has never forgave in all this. All in all, I really enjoyed rewatching this underrated show and watching your reaction to this, Luke :) I think you would like more of Naoki Urusawa's works (most of them are manga only though)

Jorginho

did johan jump off the window at the end and died?

Barbachimaru

Thank YOU for watching this with us 💙

Jorginho

pluto is another great anime that came out recently from naoki urusawa with only 8 episodes (longer than 20 min) also 20th century boys is one of the best mangas i have read hope one day it gets animated

Saracuse

My assumption about Johan is that he hasn't necessarily got away with it. But it's probably been several years and how long can they keep funding high security on a coma patient? Maybe some handcuffs wouldn't be out of place, but I don't think it's too big a deal, and maybe wasn't convenient for nurses etc.

mjaomjao2

I hope you do a reaction to the actual ending songs to monster. It's a shame that netflix didn't get the rights for them.

Barbietube

Man, I've been here since day one it was uploaded in August and followed every episode that dropped ever since. After episode 1 i immediately blind binged the entire series by myself cuz it was so damn incredible! It's actually very sad that there will be no more monster from this point on, but I'm excited for when the dr stone reactions will start. I kinda really wanted the next series to be Kill la kill but that's okay.

Patrick Jacobsen

a whole thesis could be written about this ending, and I guess that's was the point. the symbolism is strong, and it's up to the viewer how they interpret it. I could give my whole opinion about it, but that would be a 20 page essay, so I won't. I fucking love this animé, and I hope more people will take the time to watch it.

Hængeklumpen

any chance for an Evangelion reaction any time this year ;)

KorKor

What a journey it was!

TheKnightwatchOfficial

Yeah, he was in a state police hospital, but I guess they thought he would never wake up, so why keep a guard on him at all if he was supposed to be a vegetable? Highly irresponsible to have the window open, though.

Enzo

Yeah amazing but can you fix the episode 59 please, it ain't working

Mari

Absolutely insane that this is the least popular series you've done, Monster is a masterpiece and these guys are missing out! It's definitely a Sopranos ending, the first time I watched it I was a bit frustrated but on the rewatch it's perfect. The series has so many details that it's hard to pick up on the first time through but it's so layered. The ending is intentionally vague. What happened to Johan, did he escape to do more crimes or is he human again and living a normal life? Did he get arrested? Did he jump out the window? Did he even actually wake up or did Tenma imagine it? The episode title in Japanese translates to "The real monster" but who is the real monster? Is it Johan? Franz Bonaparta? The mother? Society? Is there a monster in everyone? And it's also never confirmed why Johan became the way he is. Was it the mother swearing her children would take revenge? Was it her trying to give him away and changing her mind? Obviously those weird books were part of the experiment and clearly imprinted on him, was it the experiments working as intended and the only reason Nina *isnt* like Johan too is because Franz Bonaparta hypnotized her to never become a monster? Was it Wolf naming him Johan after the picture book? Was it kinderheim 511 making him lose his memories and start to believe he was Nina or that the stories in the books were about him? As referenced by the drunk last episode there are even allusions to the anti-christ, maybe he was born fucked up and none of that stuff actually mattered. The ending interpretation and the answers to all those questions depend on your interpretation of Johan's character and your worldview. He's always been this blank space in the series that was filled by every other character's interpretation of him and projecting onto him, so it's fitting that in the end we never learn his name or what he's really about, he exists in contrast to the other characters. He is the monster who went east and destroyed everyone who showed him kindness who could call him by his name, but he couldn't break Tenma and despite all Johan's self destructive efforts, Tenma chose compassion and now Tenma is the only one who knows his true name. I personally interpret it that Johan is out there running from his crimes, he learned that he had a name and like Grimmer he returned to being human but because he devoured anyone who could call him by that name he will always be alone like he did to Wolf and like the nameless monster. To Johan that's the ultimate punishment. Meanwhile Nina is the monster who went west, despite her trauma she became a good person who will be surrounded by people who love her, and she realized she doesn't need a name, she's happy being who she is.

Mari

Also shoutout to Luke for calling out Johan projecting back in the episode where he was telling that orphan kid that his mother didn't want him. I never even realized that despite knowing the ending until he said it but he was 100% right, looking at it in light of what Johan said this episode the whole scene becomes way more dark

Mari

I genuinely did write a university paper about Johan and the ending at one point lmao. Naoki Urasawa is a genius and this series is literature.

Mari

This series has been a ton of fun, I looked forward to the reactions every weekend. Judging by the poll results it'll be a long time before we get another anime this good but I hope eventually you get around to watching more of these classics

NoahNotes

The first time watching this I was kinda upset with the ending but now watching it again, I LOVE this ending. You can interpret it anyway you want

"Which one of us was unwanted?" The fear of being not wanted, and the cruelty to inflict it upon others. Johan took it to a nihilistic extreme. The monster is the thought "not all lives are equal". That's why he was grateful to Tenma, who saved him despite another patient being a more important figure at the time. Johan believed that all of humanity were monsters, but Tenma seemed to be an exception. Johan wanted to put him to the test. If Tenma ever killed him, he would be admitting that Johan was correct - everyone was a monster who could choose that one person's life was more valuable than another's. Throughout the series, Johan repeatedly makes bets with fate, pointing to his forehead when someone is about to shoot him, daring them to follow through. If he dies, so be it. That was fate. But if he lives, then that was fate too - fate chose him, and he gets to make that bet again. The latter conclusion was realized when Tenma first saved him. When Tenma saved him a second time, this time knowing Johan's crimes, Johan realized he was wrong. Not all men were monsters - people like Tenma truely existed.

Luke should have To Love Ru as his next Patreon exclusive.

Its only natural for some anime that you like alot to be less popular, so its a balance of prioritising your time on popular anime to grow numbers for the channel, or reaching out to smaller but potentially more passionate niche groups. I think to get numbers, you need to be faster in catching the trend of new anime (ie catching the new episodes as they release). Using big past titles like AOT will increasingly be difficult as your clear the backlog. Learning from vtubers and other youtubers, perhaps create best of the year compilations, videos that will help get new viewers to watch past videos.

Thanks for watching my favorite anime. It was a fun ride. Glad you love Runge in the end.

Kylerguy77

what a great series! do we know what he's watching after this?

Orieng

The Apothecary Diaries season 2 won the vote. After that he has lined up a few animes. Eminence in shadow season 2 Spy family Season 2 Konosuba Season 2 Orb Dr Stone newest season (cant remember the number) The votes are on youtube if you wanna know more

Zensari

Great journey, like others have mentioned it would be great to have one monster like series running in parallel to the whacky goofy aura farming shows

thewizardninja

Honestly, it's almost a miracle you even got to watch Monster with the way this channel is run by community consensus. I know I've said this before (as have others), but currently the attention of the anime community on the internet is heavily dominated by shounen manga adaptions and any exceptions to that stop existing once you go any further back than 2012 (probably because most of the people responsible for this only get their anime from Crunchyroll), and for a large proportion that stops as early as 2020. So a sombre psychological thriller from 2004 was never going to pull views from that crowd regardless of the fact it's a masterpiece they NEED to see. I remember back in my day, in the ancient year of 2005, I was heavily encouraged by other anime fans online to dive into great shows from, not just 10, but 20 and 30 years prior. Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Gunbuster, Devilman, Ashita no Joe, Rose of Versailles, various Gundams, various Macrosses, Fist of the North Star, Akira, Patlabor, Lupin - if you asked for recommendations you'd hear just as many of those names as you would shows of the current time. It seems that just isn't the culture anymore, and the ones trying get easily drowned out by the crowd.

davguev

Monster isn't Patreon exclusive. The Patreon exclusive right now is Highschool DxD and that will take him a while to be done with.

davguev

Oh, didn't remember that! It's true!

davguev

Um... He mentioned it at the beginning of the video.

Kylerguy77

I skip the intros xd

HappyD

It would be nice if there was a dedicated pre-2010 slot and dedicated OVA slot. I would love to see Luke watch Gunbuster, Diebuster, etc.

Yes it’s sad to see polls with monster and my hero academia or chainsaw man and knowing monster does not have a chance. Majority of people watching these channels weren’t even born in the early 2000’s and I guess it’s normal that shonens are what gets more attention from them. I would love to see a legend of the galactic heroes reaction, but it’s never winning a poll on a reaction channel. The decision has to part from the youtuber otherwise they might never watch it. Also it would probably get bad numbers, and this is how YouTubers get their salary so it also makes sense. Sometimes I feel the urge to complain about it but it’s just the way it is. I know he has seen how good the experience of watching those shows can be and maybe we get more stories like this once in a while Semblance of sanity made a reaction to legend of the galactic heroes years ago, but I guess it’s the only big channel that made it. The more the channel is around, it’s more likely older anime appear

First time watching. 8.5/10. It's really not my cup of tea but I had a blast watching it. I don't like complicated emotions or symbolism, I more into a raw emotion straight forward guy. Basically the show is telling us Evil is a choice not a destiny and going thru Johan that there is no inherent value in human life, Tenma having moral struggles and proving himself throughout this whole thing. Still a good show tho.
