Luke try to remember that thing about putting a placement for the concubine

Trivial information about the cat (Spoiler free): The cat's name is also Maomao, but the characters are different from our Maomao's name. 猫猫: Maomao (main protagonist) → Her name is written as Cat(×2). 毛毛: Maomao (The female cat) → Its/her name is written with the characters for Hair(×2) or Fur(×2) So, while they have the same Chinese pronunciation their names have a different meaning. P.S. 8:40 is this some kind of foreshadowing? 😎 lol

- Concubine is mad at servant - Bullies Servant - Servant defends herself - Other servants help cover up incident (to evade punishment i assume) - They SAY she got poisoned to stop ppl from visiting - Substitute does not talk and gets bandaged to further decrease risk of getting exposed - Substitute lives as concubine for a year without any problems. - Substitute is about to be married and therefore would leave the palace - Panic - Other servants decide to save their own skin by "sacrificing" substitute - Smear poison on her skin to make it harder to recognize she is a substitute and cement it was poisoning - Profit? In short she did not get poisoned a year ago, that was the cover up to stop ppl from visiting and finding out about the swap. Same reason for not talking and the bandage.

Seeing how much you love good mystery stuff, I wish Detective Conan had any chance of being in the long anime stream slot on Thursday any time soon. But that probably wouldn't happen unless you've seen all other long anime that would go in that slot, since it's even longer than One Piece, and unfortunately way less popular outside of Japan. You would love the shit out of it though.

Still amuses me to see Lady Gyokuyou and her daughter being played by the same VA, reminds me of the contrast between her Anya and Frieren voices XD

25:30 how the hell did you come to that conclusion ? No, they killed the servant that looked like Jin, because if she left people would know Jin died a long time ago. Maomao explained it, she was close to getting married. EDIT: ok I think you're confusing concubine Son and Tao (the servant). Jin was jealous of concubine Son because she was lower rank yet the emperor gave her attention. So she poisoned Son. Jin was also jealous of her servant (because she found a good future husband outside), but just bullied her as a consequence, she was not poisoned initially. Then, Jin probably accidentally poisoned herself while manipulating the mushroom she used for Son. Or her servants killed her because she was so unlikable. Then Tao took her place one year. Then the other servant poisoned Tao before she leaves.

"They could be saying aah and in the subtitles it would be a whole sentence". It's not that strange tbh, in Japan some things have different context, like gasping doesn't have to mean shock or something, and some other sounds have different meaning in Japan compared to west. Making meaning more understandable is basic rule of translation.

1:57 yes. That is the same VA....

Some0neElse

i was thinking the same thing lol. Also good call on the cat's name

Just keep in mind that this isn’t a “mystery of the week” show, everything and anything can be important later on; there was a frog that jumped through the picture… those kind of things, just saying ;-) The back references will only accelerate , to season one too.

Zer0

was a big frog too

The part of Jin being poisoned herself could also never happened. She died, and to use Tao as a replacement the story of her being poisoned must have been created, so she could be kept secluded and full of bandages whenever Jinshi wold come by to check her out, as a disguise for the murder

Kenneth Hoerz

Tao wasn't sick for a year, she was just impersonating Lady Jin. The Ladies-In Waiting would have been accessories to her murder, but with Lady Tao's release and marriage coming up the murder would have come to light while Lady Tao gets away free. The Ladies-In-Waiting panicked and used the story of Lady Jin being ill for a year to poison Lady Tao and one of them mar her face to be unrecognizable. That way no one would be found out; until, the bitter ones crashing the scene and blaming Lady Tao for all their troubles since Lady Jin's death.

This episode always gets me thinking about a certain Bad Boys reference: "Did you fart?" "No..." (looks at each other) ""(sigh) Dead guy.""

Finally caught up to your latest apothecary diaries. I loooove this anime, it certainly is a break from typical anime. Love the budding romance between maomao and jinshi. Love the intrigue, and the comedy in between. Glad you like this anime!

Carmi Malig

5:33 they are so used to maomao dismissing or disapproving jinshi all the time, they thought it was weird she actually blurted out it was a good idea 🤣

10:57 the harem in ancient china is a bit complex. They have a ranking system of the emperor’s “wives.” The highest is the Queen/Empress, which the current Emperor doesn’t have at the moment. Instead, he has 4 consorts - Lady Lihua (the one maomao cured from makeup poison), Lady Gyokuyou (the one maomao is directly serving), Lady Ah Duo replaced by Lady Loulan, and Lady Lishu (the young one). These four are ranked the highest in the current story in the anime. Then there are the concubines, which have their rankings too. You can call them all concubines, but just wanted to point out the power dynamics.

Carmi Malig

I just realize the heavy foreshadowing in this episode too. I missed it before omg - all that “swapping”

28:59 They had to kill her Luke because of the incoming marriage. They will find out she is not actually Concubine Jin.

Skebaba

TBF the one who crashed the funeral WAS ruined by Jin, indeed that's where her ladies-in-waiting got the idea from, since it seems to have been a popular thing she did use periodically (after all, remember that Son's symptoms started as hair loss patches etc, and as we saw from the bandages, they clearly progressed to the face as well over time, so she was likely poisoned over time by Jin out of petty BS)

Stefan Jipa

Bro you instantaneously thought MaoMao would never go directly without theory confirmation Ding ding ding! Yeah, again, what happened to our inocent Luke? Bro, I always search for MaoMao vods, put in the damn title MaoMao😂

Sian Richardson

Mushrooms growing on top of corpses... not actually that gross. That's just life. Good fertiliser for the soil.

Stefan Jipa

Jinishi saved Mao-Mao from mushrooms or saved the mushrooms from Mao-Mao?
