yeah they clarify that detail more in season 2 but as Kiba said, the original Lucifer died in the great war so the role of Lucifer is earned now.

Yes Luke as you said the name "Lucifer" goes to whoever earns it. But as Kiba said, there was an original Lucifer, but since he died in the great war, they now give the role to whoever earns it. Whoever is the current Devil King holds the name of Lucifer.

Here Lucifer is a name that acts as a title not an actual title. The original Lucifer was named Lucifer and his descendants also had the name Lucifer. But after he died Sirzechs took on his name and is no longer referred to as a Gremory, so it changed his family name.
