Funny thing is that build was shown here and there all the time, everytime they went to the north side of the inner palace. Like a preparation for you to be aware that it did not came "out of nothing" 😁

Tarrok

While not quite as blatant as in this episode, yes it was told towards the end of season 1 that he is the emperors brother. On top of that it was heavily implied since the start with the emperors missing brother coming up in conversation every now and then.

Marcio Neves

2:41 no, no, you got it a little wrong. Jinshi BELIEVED that the current emperor was his father, instead of being actualy his brother, before being taught of how the things actually were. Nobody told him that the emperor was his father, he assume it to be, before being told otherwise later on in life. And how you take that massive revelation, that he is the emperor's brother, as nothing? I know it was teased A LOT in the first season, but, come on, really? 🤣 ALSO, I have my own belief that he is indeed actually his son, because of all the confusion with Lady A-Duoh and the Empress when they were giving birth at the same time, and Luomen being outcast because of something that happened during both births. I believe the babies got switched, given that A-Duoh got poorly treated diring the birth of her son, because the doctor was forced to give more attention to the Empress giving birth. My belief is that he switched the babies because the one that had more problematic birth would receive better care, for being the son of the current emperor. Just look how similar Jinshi and A-Duoh look 😁

I don't think his bloodline has been revealed. I am fairly sure I would have remembered that.

Marcio Neves

12:00 for what is given, he could have tried it over and over again, as much as he wanted to. But I believe he wanted to be TRULY worhty of the trial, not just figuring it out "by chance"

Non-Eunuch man are not allowed in the inner palace outside specific instances unless they are related to the imperial family. Because jinshi , as you were aware, is not really an eunuch he has to have a high enough position to be allowed inside the inner palace. We also got that revealed whenever they were talking about the medicine in S1 but they never outright stated it until now. There is also the whole thing with the birth of Ah-Duos and empress dowagers child. Whenever MaoMao solved the case of Ah-Duo childs death (the one that accidentaly got poisened by honey) she came up with an interesting theory regarding the children. Apothecary Diaries likes to give you a lot of hints and lets you figure out what is real and what is not. I absolutely love the story telling and it is even better on a rewatch.

Colourblind people don’t necessarily see better in the dark rather they’re inclined to look for different things to denote colours, things such as texture and shapes that could be out of place.

Kitsune

Seeing you very invested is good enough, we're happy that you're enjoying the show. Don't worry too much about it haha

27:00 Jinshi believes he is the emperor's brother. If the theory of swapped babies that Maomao came up with earlier were true, he would actually be the emperor's son (with Ah Duo), while the emperor's actual little brother died in infancy. Thus far, that's only a theory that Maomao came up with, and we haven't seen any evidence in support of it other than Jinshi's resemblance to Ah Duo.

It's the first time the anime tells us directly who Jinshi is (second if you did notice his hairpin after the garden party with a dragon in it), BUT Remember the baby switch theory Maomao had in the s1 ep11? That was the big hint that maybe he's that dead son. But who knows who's who since it's not confirmed (at least to the anime/manga only)

виина

And the garden party. The table seat for the brother was empty and then Jinshi almost came to his place, but then he saw maomao running away from the party

jdoggivjc

All I can say is what Jinshi's relationship to the Emperor is without spoiling is... well, it's complicated. All I will say is don't forget about Ah-Duo.

Cédric Michaud

There's also the religious ceremony that Jinshi was attending in ep 19 (when he almost died and Maomao saved him but took damage to her leg and face) that showed he has to be related to the Emperor.

виина

Oh right that one too

Cédric Michaud

I also think that Jinshi is colourblind, just look at his reactions the first time they pass through the Shrine of Choosing, it looks like he would take different doors if it was him.

Miky Horo

One of the best episode of this season !!

AuroraRaiju

They haven't directly confirmed Jinshi's relationship but there's been enough information that you can kinda put it together but there's also been enough confusing information, red herrings and unreliable exposition to throw you off course.

Blake

no. in the scene with the last door Jinshi says something along the lines of "go though the red door? there is no red door" if he was colour blind he would asume the green door was the red door.

Joshua Lopez

Pretty sur this is the first time they've explicitly shown it in the show, but there were lots and lots of smaller indications up until now. Mostly in theories that Maomao takes most of the way through, then discards. Or conversations between Gaoshun and Jinshi. Probably about six different things, just not completely explicit.

Lucjusz Kusiński

Choosing an Emperor through the maze is literally Trials of Ascendency from Path of Exile lmao

Tasel

It’s kinda up in the air which he is. At this point we know he’s either the Emperor’s A) bother or B) son. Depends if he was swapped a) with their knowledge or B) they don’t know. We assume the one concubine that left season one has a very very strong resemblance to him.

GutterSnipe1

FYI: you cannot be color blind pilot the military. But they are highly desirable for photo analysis and snipers. They are not fooled by color.

Some0neElse

Oh, the weary traveler draws close to the end of the path

Carmi Malig

The one line Jinshi said, I know, such a heavy statement. He understood why the Emperor brought him and Maomao there.

Kenneth Hoerz

In scene 30:30 with Jinshi next to the moon is perfect because the emperors brother is also known as the "Moon Prince". Which also means that the previous emperor was both of their father.

Teddy Scott

Recall back in season 1: There was the story of the Empress Dowager and Concubine Ah Duo both having sons at the same time when Louman was still the Palace Doctor. One of those sons was accidentally killed by Ah Duo’s Head Lady In Waiting when she fed him honey. The surviving son is Jinshi. So he’s most certainly the prince but it’s unconfirmed if he’s the Current Emperor’s son or brother, because Maomao had the theory that there was a potential swap where Ah Duo gave her son to the Empress Dowager so he would grow up having better treatment. Do keep in mind how much Jinshi resembles Ah Duo, but not as much the Empress Dowager. Publicly, people know that there is a living prince with the title as the Imperial Younger Brother but (most) people do not know that “Jinshi the Eunich” is the Prince.

Skebaba

As an addendum, this nickname is because of the Emperor's nickname being the Sun Prince back in the day

Skebaba

Wait why photo analysis?

Lerchenlied

Eunuchs were a thing not because of jealous but rather as a measure against insurrection. In ancient china things like dynasties and royal ties were really important. Add to that a system that makes corruption really easy and you get lot's of instability because ambitous, corrupt (or both) gouverment officials would try to become the ruler themself. So certain bureaucrats and palace officials were castrated to make it less appealing to try to seize power (as they couldn't start their own dynasty and thus have 0 legitimacy upon gaining power). But yes, banging the emperors concubines and wives was also a reason

Sian Richardson

The question is... what is Gaoshun's relation to the imperial family then? Or is he an exception to the rule, provided he takes that tonic.
