The food was aphrodisiacs, and Jinshi can't normally eat it because he takes meds to pretend to be an eunuch. The food is meant to "Invigorate", in other words stimulate the male organ, which Jinshi actually has but is not "Suppose" to. Besides he is taking a drug that is suppose to make him limp to hide he is not a eunuch. A trap to show he is more then he claims to be.

Ice doesn't emit a cooling effect it's more like absorbing and trapping the heat. A bowl of water would have the same effect, slowing the heat traveling around the room but take so long it would be hard to notice a similar example however is the cooling effect of a large body of water like a lake or flowing water like a stream or shower.

It had a flintlock mechanism, which was also around the time rifling was introduced. That would have made it much more accurate. Not exactly correct since you have to consider the variables as well - speed and acceleration of the bullet, distance, the angle from which it pierced and many more.
