The writing thing you were thinking of is called a "Chekhov's Gun" when someone puts a gun down on the table it's going to be used before the end of the show. (I'm gonna make a joke but I didn't pick up on any of these things my first time round) I also love how you identifyed something at the beginning of the episode that might be important and then later weren't sure why the conversation is important while there is a Literal Gun schematic on the table. The irony is halerious.

basically ALL the women in the rear palace is part of the Emperors harem.. some girls may have a sweetheart back home and try and hide from his view, but if he says he wants you, youre next.. the 4 consorts shown in the anime here just shows that this empire have a system that favours the women from the main officer family branches so that they have a shot at becoming intertwined with the emperor. but it would be totally ok for the emperor to ignore those 4 and go for completely other girls. We got an example of that with the current emperors mother, where she came in here to take care of her elder sister.. but the emperor chose her instead, even though her capacity here in the palace at the time was just a handmaiden for one of the concubines.

The way woman at the clinic were treated is so horrible to me. Imagine you go to some extravagant place to work for a while. Being just 10 you get pred on by the most important guy in the country, and now your fate is cemented. You will spend your whole life in this one place. And even if Empress Dowager would let them go, there is nobody who want them outside of rear palace. They just lost their life to one pathetic guy.

Here we go, the turning point. Up until this point i liked S2, but it seemed a bit shallow and more disconnected than S1, but from this point onward it really started to add up and the ending was awesome...cant wait
