I think season 4 adds more explanations because they were supposed to be in season 3 but the previous studio decided to create their own version of events and thats why you're confused. Also watching episode 0 of season 4 would have helped somewhat with the confusion starting this season

Yeah, right now we’re in volume 9, while season 3 covered volume 5 - 7. But basically volume 5 - 7 were all combined together in a really weird way instead of animating the arcs like the previous seasons did. Honestly as long as he takes the Lokis curse and Rias thing as non-canon, it should be easy enough to follow still. That stuff with Rossweise and Irina and Odin all happened, just not in the same way it happened in the novel.

No Season 4 is good, it’s definitely better than Season 3. People just hate that the art style changed. Which is fair. I preferred the older art style too. But in regard to the fights and the plot, Season 4 is perfectly fine.

Please keep in mind that fans had to wait 3 years to get the fourth season. Only to get this jank art style. You say the fight scenes are good. How often do you suppose they will be fighting? What are the rest of the scenes like? Simple, one element animation on a static backgroud? IRL pics used as backgrounds. Whatever they had to do to save for those money shots. It's not just the art style that's changes. It's the budget animantion that makes it stand out. It feels more like a cartoon than an anime. Maybe some people prefer that. Can you enjoy season 4? Yes. It's all about tastes and expectations. Like Luke said, he had very low expectations going in. So mid is great when you where expecting dog crap.

She is called the Devil Queen because among all the Devil Kings, she is the only woman. And they are throwing you random data and flashbacks because season 3 was shit storywise so they left a lot of info in the dark.

well the art style is meant to look exactly like the light novel illustrations so technically they were supposed to always look this way. Also this studio corrected any coloring mistakes the previous studio made in terms of character design.

the art style is most likely staying this way if there is a season 5 since this is meant to be much closer to how the light novel illustrations look. If anything this is how all the previous seasons should have looked if they wanted to stay accurate to the novel

it is a lot better, execution-wise. Passione really did it well compared to TNK. the reason people didn't like this season is the change of art style, that's all.

Just saying though, this style doesn’t look like the light novel either. Maybe more so than TNK? The eyes look great, but just one look at Asia and Koneko and Rias and you can tell they aren’t as well designed. Asia was given Double D’s for no reason. There’s actually a Vtuber anime Rias Gremory was in, where they made the BEST looking DxD character I’ve seen, it’s somewhere between Passione and TNK, and I’d honestly hope they use a style like it for a season 5.

I was one of the people who watched season 4 and had the thought that the style got worse. But honestly, seeing it again now, I agree with you luke, it's genuinely better. I guess I just didn't like change lol

Skipping episode 0 is basically like starting the season on episode 2 though. It’s different than just skipping an OVA, no wonder he is a bit confused

Ive said it before and ill say it again i'm digging Rossweisse. Just adorable! though if you look at it she's supposed to technically be equal to all the gremory family members and more likely a "junior" as far as being inducted into the family. But shes tasked as a chaperone basically. It's almost like Issei should be like hell no i'm two and a half seasons your senior you do my bidding! :D :D But then again being a valkirye shes supposed to probably be a least a few hundred years old i guess??????? I don't know anyway the fox is cute too :) :)

You clearly dislike the art style that is much closer to the illustrations in the novels. That’s fine. But don’t look at S1-3 with rose colored glasses. Those were slideshow fests too just different. And I’ll also take then greater authenticity of S4 over the garbage that was the end of S3 anyway.

Luke the “extra stuff” they threw in is an unfortunate byproduct of the studio that did seasons 1-3 basically tossing out huge parts of the story in season 3. This is the new studio’s attempt to bring the story back to where it’s supposed to be but to do that they unfortunately had to add a bunch of exposition to explain all the parts that were cut out of season 3. And unfortunately much of that cut content is important for the story in the future.

I've never stated that seasons 1 - 3 where good. Just that season 4 was a steep decline in overall animation quality and production. Highschool DxD is a happy dumpster fire. Most people are not watching it for the story. They are watching it for the PLOT. So when they degarde the visual appeal of the show, it directly affects the main reason for people watch the show. Say what you want. They didn't make season 5, did they? Nobody's talking about a reboot or a continuation for DxD, are they?

The cuts are the result of the website you’re using to watch it automatically skipping the OP. It is also cutting some of the episode. Usually you can turn that off right under the video player when it’s not in full screen or just manually scrub to it.
