Nyarlathotep

Lu C

Nyarlathotep

Dang well thanks for letting me know.

Jonathan Perez

Didn’t technically Star Wars get away with starting in the middle since it started on episode 3

Lu C

New Hope was 4th

Ram.

So that platform elevator in an angled shaft going down is classic and everywhere, you're right you've played a game with it, if you've played the Halo games, most prominent is Halo 2 on the space station fighting the Elites with their jetpacks. But it's in like every game and series ever with a big underground base.

Lu C

I'm glad you are enjoying the movie :) Perfect Blue is another masterpiece scheduled, I really hope you continue watching movies in between the series, as there are many others for example Paprika, Red Line... the jumping in the middle of happening / in medias res narrative technique is known to the mankind for very long time, for example many war movies start in this fashion, John Wick, Pulp Fiction...

Jverbe

HII LUKEE can u watch paprika?

Sean

Omg yes please.

Yero19

I can't believe you've never seen Akira before!! Another movie I'd recommend is "Macross - Do You Remember Love?" Although it's not a movie, Gunbuster is a classic that should be a must-see for any anime fan; it's just six OVAs, each about 30 minutes long.

FaerieRose

Yeah, Luke would enjoy Gunbuster.

Christian Strähler

Fun fact, Tokyo had the Olympics in 2020, but they were delayed one year because of COVID. Akira was right in 1988 :)

12:30 Thats because a lot of sci-fi movies in the past told stories differently. Think about it, the story is within a certain setting, you learn about that setting in the course of watching that movie, and if some things are "left out" its up to your interpretation or imagination. Today's stories aren't like that, not much is left open for interpretation. It may feel like you are "dropped" in the middle of a story, but yeah you are supposed to be. Unless you get like some kind of "Star Wars Text Crawl" at the beginning, you are being dropped into a world with characters that are living lives, doing their thing, events are in motion. I for one dont expect the characters to come straight out and tell you who they are when they show up on screen, what their role in the world is, and how the world works in comparison to our own. All of that is up to us to discover through the course of the film's story, if a story is told well enough. I'm saying that because for a lot of younger movie watchers today, I've seen some of them struggle with grasping older films like this that are set in alternate or futuristic settings, because quite frankly, a lot of younger viewers are too used to how stories today are told. Nowadays, movies come out and they dump exposition on the viewer almost right away, and I might be making leaps here but I attribute that to today's viewers having shorter attention spans. We watch short TikToks and reels and we expect to get instant gratification from the 15-30 seconds of what we're watching. Older filmmakers usually like to stick to the philosophy of "show, dont tell", as in you paint a picture for the viewer of the world that you're trying to present to them. But today, movies are "told, not shown." It leaves little to interpretation or imagination. Not saying that this is how you might view things like this movie or Blade Runner or other settings like that Luke. I'm just saying this is how I've observed the way stories used to be told compared to now, and how being used to today's storytelling could make it difficult for some viewers to really "get" whats going on in older stories. You describe something like "Imagine if Star Wars cut out the beginning and just drops you in, like you dont see the Tatooine part", but Luke, movies like Star Wars DOES drop you in. We aren't really told what the Star Wars universe is about. We ARE dropped into a story already going on. We start with the Rebel's ship being chased by an Empire ship and we are expected to just already get that "Empire = Bad guys, Rebels = Good Guys" and theres this mission about secret information, and some dude in a big black shiny helmet who captures this Princess, and then we send two robots down to some desert planet, blah blah blah. Its all just an ongoing story that we are dropped into. Now, when we get to Luke, Luke at first is a character that represents the audience. He is told information that is meant to be exposition FOR the audience, such as "Hey there are these guys called Jedi, and theres a power called the Force, and there was a war in the past and the Empire is evil", all that stuff. In a movie like this, "Akira", Kaneda is our Luke, he is meant to be us, the audience that gets brought into a story of Akira, even though he has his own business already going on. In this instance its not being on a moisture farm, but he's just a hooligan and a leader of a biker gang set in a future dystopian world. Thats all we really need to know. (By the way, "peanuts" are drugs. Pills) That all said, the film "Akira" IS very hard to understand. Trust me, I've watched this movie over 30 years ago, and it took me like a dozen viewings to start to understand it. But, understand also that this is a single film that is trying to take a VERY long story from a manga an adapt it for the screen. A TON of the story from the manga had to be cut and altered, so the movie is missing much of the story for sure and so it is hard to understand the story and setting and plot. A few years ago there were rumblings of rumors that some studio was going to "re-make" Akira but more into a longer series, say like a 24 episode TV series or something. I would say though based on the manga, we would need more like 52 episodes at least, four whole seasons worth to cover most of the manga. But, sadly those rumors were put to rest and it looks like we're never getting the manga fully animated.

I loved your reactions but im starting to think maybe your brain is rotten by today's media, not everything should be obvious and spoon fed to you, theres a thing called storytelling and buildup, and character development, im sorry bro but im done giving you money

57:30 "Facts" can be manipulated through propaganda and misinformation. I know you're in the UK and I'm sure you have some shady stuff going on there, but here in the US we literally have the current administration trying to re-write history and scrub any notion that America has done anything that we could be "shameful" about. There are some trying to white-wash the practice of slavery, some even try to make excuses for Hitler's actions and say that his ideology had some "good points" and so it should be an ideology to be emulated. Even down to basic economical facts, we got idiots out here thinking that if we impose giant tariffs on imported goods from particular countries, somehow WE benefit from those tariffs, as if THAT country pays the tariffs, that its incoming money into this country, and that any notion that the added tariffs to goods is passed off to the consumer is just some left-wing lie. We live in a topsy turvy world, Luke. Facts dont hold much sway anymore, unfortunately.

SouldeLuna

FYI this part does not have the "Akira" tag

11:00 Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are some Asian countries where there were social uprisings a few years ago due to poor government management. Let's hope that politicians in Europe or America do not follow the same path.

Awsmspaceball

15:15 those aren't the examples you think they are. JP starts out when the park is already built and a character dies by some unseen threat. SW we get thrown in the middle of a space battle/persuit where we immediatly are introduced to the main antagonist. getting thrown immedaitly in the middle of a story is more common than you might think

Awsmspaceball

29:00 they literally just said that he most likely awakend powers because of his contact with number 26, which is implied to be that blue kid. so it wasn't entirely luck, since people in general might awaken psychic powers if they are exposed to it

Gunbuster and Diebuster, alongside FLCL and Gurren Lagann, are definitely my fav shows of all time. He'd love those, it's such a vibe!

Earl Preston

halo 2 hadnt remembered that. im remembering the same thing in star wars jedi knight 2 dark forces. one of the early levels on nar shadda i think .

Earl Preston

im intrigued watching this again to notice the animation similarity with Cowboy bepop. even thhough cowboy bepop was late 90s it is very much atmospheric like this. I'm suspecting two things - either the same author or studio or more likely just a common thread in cyberpunk/space anime from Japan in the pre 2000 vintage.

KayJayO

if more movies cut out the hand holding beginnings they would for sure be better if done correctly audiences are smarter than studios give them credit

KayJayO

You can track the passage of time by how long Tetsuo’s hair is the movie is vague about it, but it is based on a manga series and a lot more time passes in it
