There's a plan to adapt the entire manga as an anime sometime in the future.

Bersain Balbuena

The Akira manga can actually be divided into three phases: 1. The past (Akira's creation). 2. What happens in the film. 3. What happens after the film. The problem was that when the film was released, only four of the six volumes of the manga had been completed. Therefore, while the film is a masterpiece, it feels rushed and lacks context. They tried to include parts of the introduction to provide context, but it was rushed, and the manga continues. Ideally, it should have been a trilogy. But even so, we have one of the best films ever made.

Richard

The manga was made by the same guy that directed the movie and apparently the story goes way beyond this ending. As for the 18 certificate, the film is forty years old. Ratings were much stricter back then. I can almost guarantee it was for sexual violence.

Perfect Blue is a masterpiece :) please add Black lagoon, Claymore and Yona of the Dawn to the Patrreon exclusive vote :)

The guy with the money briefcase did not kill himself. He was having a heart attack from the stress, he was popping nitroglycerin pills like Pez to try and stop the heart attack, but he still had one and died. Stress can really do a number on you.

Zer0

26:54 Guy had a heart attack. When you see someone grabing at their chest. Call an ambulance.

Zer0

Luke needs to watch DBZ or he will keep making these comparisons.

Zer0

I understand the two but Yona of the Dawn? That can be outside Patreon.

Lu C

It looks so but actually there seems to be some copyright issue, unfortunately Luke watched the 1st episode in shoujo / josei sampler stream, and it got hit by copyright later on YouTube, if you check on Extra how much from the episode was left you will see just Luke's intro + after thoughts...

Hiruman

Maybe after every other popular shonen? One thing is guaranteed with DBZ, he'll get a lot of new viewers.

As others have said, the manga this is based on is much longer, and so while they can't exactly make a "sequel" to this, what they could do is make a series that is more manga-accurate. Because there's so, so much other things that happened in the manga that didn't happen like it did in the animated movie. That was the plan a few years ago but they scrapped those plans unfortunately. I think it would be too damn expensive to make. I highly suggest you look up some behind-the-scenes making-of for this movie. The artistry and craft that went into this movie was unprecedented at the time, and really hasn't been topped since.

Abar_Barian

One of the more amazing facts about this movie is that it's completely hand drawn. They literally don't make them like that any more.

Arctic_Hokkyoku

GoS 5 Next week will be worth it by far. Akira is great and maybe we will get a full adaptation of the manga someday as a new anime series. We can hope as it has been rumored for many years.

Nikkelz

Yona has severe copywrite. The entire first episode had to be cut for the "sampler" reaction Luke did ages ago. if you check the YT video it skips from pressing play to the end of the ep.

Nate Ming

It's funny you bring up Dragon Ball, because Kei is also Arale (from the creator's other famous work Dr. Slump) and red necktie biker Kai is Trunks

Some other fun anime movie recs: -Ninja Scroll (this one's gonna have to be Patreon-only) -Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust -The First Slam Dunk -Dragon Ball: Path to Power (this can be your introduction!)

If you like these deep thought 90's anime, consider watching Armitage III. Truly an excellent movie that questions what it means to be a human wrt extremely advance robots meant to emulate humanity.

Luke, in the Manga, which is the og source material, when they open the capsule for Akira, unlike the movie, a boy is ACTUALLY there inside! Akira is actually alive there, they just cut that in the movie in order to end it earlier. 🎉 And then the Manga goes for its second half of the story, which is AWESOME and shares pretty much the same length of the first part (so the story is very big, cause the first part in the Manga is also much bigger and more detailed in the Manga for obvious reasons). Marvelous Manga, one of the best ever. 🥲 If you enjoyed it, perhaps consider buying the volumes one day and read them in your own free time. The Manga is great, the art is mind blowing, and the story is much better there, for obvious reasons.

NikoCat11

YEAH in the Manga Akira is actually alive there when they open the capsule, and then the story goes NUTS from there on, I LOVE IT.

its early 2000s but a similar hard hitting one is saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet or She, the Ultimate Weapon, I dont remember it being a series as i have a dvd of it so i must have only watched a clip movie of it. Truly devastating. the series must have been more so. i mean ive only watched it once years ago and i can just remember beats of it. but definitely intense. Not sure you can stream it but its certainly powerful.

Lapinporokoira

Would definitely recommend the Manga for more answers

This movie traumatized me as an eight year old. But it was cool and interesting. My dad had it on VHS. He doesn't even watch anime, but he had Akira.

KayJayO

they are in the old city where the og explosion happened they were building an olympic center out there as the first step at making habitable again it’s essentially abandoned

KayJayO

the “explosion” was the birth of a new universe both times
