There are not many good new Disney movies. Here all good ones since 2010: - Tangled - Wreck-It Ralph - Big Hero 6 - Inside Out - Zootopia - Moana/Vaiana - Coco - Encanto - Inside Out 2 Frozen has great songs, but the story is really meh...

Great idea for a series and journey! Personally, as a professional screenwriter who only discovered all Disney movies in film school and was stunned at how good some of them were, I have to say my personal tops would be Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Nightmare Before Christmas, Emperor’s New Groove, Wall-e, Tangled, Coco, Up, Zootopia, … damn there are even more I’d like to mention. No idea which ones Luke has seen though 😅

Encanto was a great movie! And I love the idea of ​​you reacting to more Disney movies! If you like them, why limit yourself? There are incredible movies from other studios too. I personally think you'd love DreamWorks "Wild Robot" (it touches on themes of motherhood and nature beautifully). Or even some of Disney's more underrated films like "Treasure Planet" (one of my favorites). There are many you'd surely enjoy! I think you should record the intros in post as to not disrupt the flow of the movie and then edit them in. That way you don't have to pretend to have not skipped back, you don't have to pretend to be happy in your youtube voice since songs come in at emotional moments, I feel like this way could really be taking you out of it

yeah, let's not rush him to watch a lower quality version. he should wait for the crunchy roll high def perfect final version (They usually take some time to tweak some animation fixes or fluidity fixes afftrer movies are out sometimes based on audience feedback, so let's wait for that! i want him to see the movie as intended and ENJOY IT perfectly, not rush something for our sake :)

one thing i would suggest, luke, is maybe turning on the captions. not necessarily CC but just english captions, and it will help with audience like me who are hard of hearing especially with accents. but also it will help with the fact that (and i say this in the happiest way possible) : you're a loud one :D and i love that about you but that makes the movie sound lower audio volume, and it's hard to balance both you and the movie audio in mono-audio systems or computer browsers lol

i agree. i think luke should just enjoy hte movie in the moment and then make the intro in post for youtube, since it sometimes takes away from the emotional beat of what they're feeling in the moment of the song.

The working theory is the reason why Mirabel didn't receive her gift is she's the next holder of Abuela's miracle. Allowing the family to continue on into the next generations. So until it was gone, it couldn't be recreated. Also of note, there's a new area at Animal Kingdom that will be this entire area. It's replacing DinoLand USA. They are recreating the village (and Casa Madrigal), and making it South American themed.

Her gift is specifically managing the magic which is directly influenced by the family dynamics like how her aunt's emotions effect the weather. In either case I think she was also chosen to succeed her grandmother as head of the household.

2:07:45 to be fair to mirabelle's mom, that's the one time i kinda GET IT, she saw her daughter is alive (checked on her first), told her not to move (because you're not supposed to move after an injury just in case of a concussion or internal bleed), but you can hear in the background someone was yelling her mom's name to come help, so like a medic, she had to assess the situation and tell her to stay put while she checked on the others to see if there's anyone with a more severe urgent injury. So does it suck after all we've seen in the movie? sure, even when the parents spoke up to the grandma multiple times about taking it easy on mirabelle, there's also the cultural "honor" and "respect your elders" , coupled with generational trauma that makes it very hard to completely stand up fully to someone who outranks you in the family, until a critical inciting incident. But this time, i kinda get that the mom had to step away, it doesn't take too much from the fact that she cares about her daughter, but mirabelle was in 1 piece, just shaken up, and in her mind, someone could be impaled or something across the room, in a more critical situation, you know? The unknown damages vs the known the damages. also, small tiny bit of animation detail: right before the mom starts looking for mirabelle, you can see her picking up a vial from a cabinet. That's implied to be pain killer medicine, or iodine or something, and she was salvaging it right before going back to mirabelle to tend to her.

Luke, I think Mirabel responds immediately to Isabella‘s cactus and confession the way she does because Bruno put pressure on her as well. Think about it. You’re the one kid in this family without a gift and someone just told you that you’re the key to holding it all together??? He may have been well-intentioned but he gave her a singular focus. The vision told her to go and get a hug from her sister not listen to her sing about her new plant that she created lol so I think it makes a difference in how Mirabel originally entered the scene. She got there eventually. 🤗

Fun fact, disney underestimated Luisa's appeal. They created so much merch for mirabelle and isabella, for the "typical disney princess", but all the girls AND BOYS wanted Louisa merch, especially the oldest siblings, and they were sold out instantly and disney had to play catch up to create more luisa merch retroactively, to catch up for the demand.

I thought I would never use my degree in Spanish Literature again, until Encanto came along. LOL. Mirabel means Beholder Of Wonders, or Beholder of Beauty, but with the old fashioned sense of Beauty being something magical that takes the breath away, a/k/a 'Wonder' or 'Awe'. Mirabel is the only character who wears glasses. Literally, out of everyone, her personal bias has been 'corrected' to allow her to see clearly. Her glasses are rimmed in green, a color usually reserved for the wild or the forbidden magic, but here used exclusively to mean 'the future', which is a kind of 'forbidden vision', and carries a heavy price (Poor Bruno). Encanto is very absoiute on this point - Green = Vision at a Price. One last point about the green, the sands of time, and the glasses -- Bruno uses the Sands of Time to summon the Green Vision of the Future, but it is cloudy and never received well. Mirabel is his magical opposite -- the Green on her provides the Frame, but the "Sands" of time for her are the lenses to correct her vision. Bruno parts the sands of Time to be granted a vision, but Mirabel's magic unites the Sands of Time to grant clarity to the Present. Her magic is always her Clarity, but the House cannot give her a room, or special anything, because her power is to See Wonders Clearly, and for that she cannot use special powers, they would only get in the way of her understanding What Actually Is. Mirabel is the New Matriarch. We know that Time still passes for the Madrigal Family - Abuela ages for us in the show, and so do the children. Abuela will not survive forever, and the foundation which worked for Abuela's generation would not serve the next generations about to come, which Mirabel has been chosen to guide. When Abuela finally passes at the end of her life, Mirabel will inherit Abuela's room in the center of the house. Many characters interact with Casita, the House, but if you watch, the House only ever answers or speaks directly to two characters - Abuela, and Mirabel. Further evidence that both women are the Matriarchs of the Madrigal Clan, the Keepers of Casita, each to their own Generation. There are many, many more wonderful points of literary analysis that you can jump into for Encanto, which is what makes this a lovely conversation topic. But I'll let other superfans jump in and cover the ones I've skipped. Oh, and Dolores? Just one note there. When you can't help but hearing and NOTICING a sound as minor as an eye twitching behind closed doors across the house, then you can't help it, you hear and know EVERYTHING. Whether you want to or not. Which means that even if you TRY to keep everyone's secrets, so very, very much of what you hear ALL THE TIME are secrets and sins and crimes and conspiracy, you just lose track of how you heard something, whether it's common knowledge, or personal superpower-fueled insight. The ONLY secrets you are going to be ABLE to keep are the really, insanely deep ones. Because they are the only ones with the emotional weight to them to remind you that no, we don't talk about Bruno. And besides, you know already about everthing Bruno is doing anyways, so you already know he's harmless, just give your uncle a break. You all know how crazy this family is.

Mirabel wasn't empathetic to Isabella because she is also a bit bitter. She isn't perfect and from her perspective her sister's life is a perfect antithesis for her own, she can't relate and she's blinded by her frustration.

I think Adams comment enters in way more detail than I ever will do so check his comment please, but a theory I believe to be true is that Mirabel didn’t receive a gift because she was chosen as the new Matriarch, the one who will keep the miracle alive, so she doesn’t have a gift ,like her grandmother, or rather her gift is the house, symbolic represented when she puts the doorknob at the end. I loved this reaction and can’t wait for the next one! Moana has some good songs, like “You’re welcome”, but I’d tone my expectations down a bit its not on the same level as Encanto IMO. Really excited for Hamilton, Lin Manuel Miranda is a musical genius really!

Watch the special features, especially the one with Lin working on the songs with the actresses. It’s interesting to see the people playing the parts, how he communicated the vision. Also the one where he’s incorporating traditional Columbian music & artists into the film. The grandmother is played by a famous older Columbian actress. The Spanish ballad was by a young Columbian singer (who also sings in English) Sebastian Yatra. You would like his music, it’s upbeat not just ballads. He has a great duet with John Legend.

Encanto is hands down one of my top favorite disney movies, no matter how many times i watch this movie i still end up tearing up so much. Loved that you got to react to it and we got to see your reaction to it! Although like two other have suggested in the comments, i think it would be better if you pre-record the youtube song introductions so they dont have to interrupt the whole movie experience. And maybe adjust your or the movie audio settings, because your volume is very loud and the movie volume was very low lol.

1:06:31 Reminds me of a manhua I read. A family was made to be vessels of 2 different powers, but this led to the kids being experimented on by their parents in quite brutal ways. One of the sons wanted to protect his little brother by sealing away one of the powers, this led to him being thrown out for being useless which fred him from the torture but on the other hand being ostracized like that led to him being bullied by strangers for being abandoned which ultimately led to him killing himself.

This was lovely (added my comment before watching because I was so excited to see that you watched this and also found a way to include the songs!) Great mix of both song reaction opportunities as well as getting to watch the songs in context so you don't spoil yourself and then we all get everything! Hope you're having a great new year and I am excited for this next chapter of the journey! Also not to be too hopeful, but if this journey ever does open up the route for some disney series there are some anime adjacent things I think you'd both really love and also would have fans for. The Owl House, Gravity Falls and Avatar the last Airbender are just... amazing experiences and I can't recommend them enough.

I joined your patreon just to cry with you. I'm not Columbian (I'm Puerto Rican), but I can say this movie still hits pretty hard (Coco hits even harder for me, I really hope you react to it next). Matriarchs are a huge thing in Hispanic/Latino households, so anyone talking back to Abuela, be it good intentions or otherwise, is still a sign of disrespect. A bit messed up, but it explains why Mirabel's family doesn't stick up for her as quickly. At least, that's how I see it. I might be projecting haha

I have watched this movie quite a few times and I still cry. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. some of the characters fit in the psychological rubric of Family Systems theory which is " a psychological framework that examines the dynamics and relationships within families, emphasizing the interconnectedness of family members and the impact of these relationships on individual behavior and emotional well-being. Originating in the 1950s, it draws from various disciplines, including psychoanalysis and developmental psychology, and was influenced by the disruptions in family structures due to historical events like World War II. I know this is about a Disney movie journey... ,and since Disney bought Pixar... one way or another... please react to Turning Red. If u haven't seen it, its got a few really interesting themes. it came out the same year as Encanto. they are still a couple of my favorite movies.

Julieta in her defense is the closest thing to a doctor or healer they probably HAVE. Even if she can't actually help she probably feels obligated to try. Mirabel shook her head that she wasn't hurt and someone was calling for Julieta urgently, and Mirabel is nearly an adult (15-16ish). She clearly didn't want to go but in an emergency sometimes you have to do things like walk away from your child.

Disney took a whole team to Columbia to research the culture to get the representation right. Apparently the funny thing about the coffee kid is that kids really do drink coffee in Columbia. It's just an inextricable part of the national culture. Yes, the cactus only grew when Isabella spoke her true feelings aloud. Yes Mirabel has butterflies on her blouse & skirt from the beginning. The song in Spanish, "Dos Orugitas" is about two caterpillars that fall in love and are afraid of change & losing each other but are pushed forward into the future because the world keeps changing. You should listen to the translated song & read the lyrics. They're important. The other song in Spanish is about Columbian pride & how Colombia is an encanto - an enchanted place of wonder. Surface Pressure is also performed live & kindof jazzy - very tough & sexy, by the same actress who sings it in the movie. It's fkking impressive. You should do a YT reaction to it. Abuela is a personification of resilience, but also grief, ptsd, survivor's guilt, matriarchal loneliness, compulsive control issues, political/refugee trauma, and generational trauma. She's breaking the family because she's so broken herself. Her need for safety was the foundation of the first Casita, but no amount of magic, excellence, or control could make her feel safe so long as she buried her trauma and kept her fears and doubts to herself instead of letting her family and community help her heal. The new foundation of the rebuilt Casita is a miracle renewed with self- determination and family & community cooperation and support. Abuela doesn't have to hold everything together herself. She doesn't have to dictate how things go to protect the encanto. She can trust her family & her community. They're all healing and stronger for it.

Lin-Manuel Miranda who did all the original music for the movie is also the Writer, Director, and Lead Actor of the Hamilton as well. He wrote this after he did his musical. The best thing about these movies is not the bigger story told, or some adventure but the moral/deeper meaning behind all of it. It's the lesson that is meant to be learned. That is also what is so great about Frozen, and Moana as well.

Encanto is one of the best of the New Disney because the big bad isn’t some evil step mother or witch. Its generational trauma and the pressure we put on ourselves, and suffering under burdens we think we cannot share with anyone. Abuela (granny) made many mistakes, but she was left with the weight of not only her family, but the entire village, all looking towards her for guidance and safety and security. And it happened when she was very young, and her partner was lost. A new mother, with literally no one to turn to because everyone is looking to her to figure it out, and the miracle was born out of her grief and pain. Encanto is about the bravery found in forgiveness and asking for help and hearing one another. - go back and listen to Dos Orugitas again with subtitles in English. Its a beautiful song.

Dunno if you know it or it was already mentioned but the animation team fought as hell for Louisa to look like that. The head team wanted her to be more feminine like Isabella because well muscular woman? Oh no! End of story they did everything to keep her the way we have her in the film and after the official dolls came out Louisa's was one of the first sold out. And for me, her song is best song in the film. I feel it so much and can relate to it. Little bit sad they didn't have it more clearly in the film but Bruno's room wasn't like that all the time. His door got pulled in more and more he got disconnected from the family and his actual room part got higher up to show the distance between him and the family. If you know that it feels different to see his room and all the stairs symbolism how emotionally far away you can feel from the person next to you or your whole family you're living together.

I absolutely adore encanto, no surprise that you loved it! A popular theory when this came out that iirc the film-makers confirmed is that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because the miracle chose her to replace Abuela as the head of the family and the caretaker of the candle since Abuela also doesn't have a gift. Also those two are the only ones to directly talk to the casita and give it instructions. Not to mention of course that without a gift Mirabel was perfectly placed to put the family on the path to healing from the generational trauma. Such a powerful film with a lot of important messages that I know many, many people have resonated with.

My only thought about it was when it comes to Hamilton, maybe don't stop to do an intro for every song during the full movie reaction, edit one in after the fact for YouTube. Otherwise that reaction will take forrrrrever 😆 So many songs. Keep the reaction and summary after each song as you feel, but the intro bit (or maybe outro/repetition bits too), edit in after each song. people will understand. Oh and Moana for sure. Both. I haven't seen anyone mention this, but you brought it up. The man Isabella was foing to marry, he looks a bit similar to the grandpa of the family. Him being selected as a potential groom is on purpose. If you look back, you will see that since she was born, Abuela had her to the hip. Young Granny and Isabella look very similar too, so the Nan saw herself in her granddaughter. She wanted her to be happy, perfect, desirable and marry a man similar to the one she loved (and have 5 kids) all the things she wanted to do, but couldn't. She was projecting directly on Isabella, so you could say more than Mirabelle, she felt the most pressure of the whole family as she wasn't a representation of the family, but the head Granny.

Moana and Coco are both excellent, but I would put the Frozens at the top of the list. Obviously Frozen was a cultural phenomenon, the music is great, and Idina Menzel (original Elphaba) was incredible. But, I think the family relationships and the characters' internal struggles will really speak to you (/wreck you at points, tbh). IMO there are a lot of parallels between Elsa and Rumi from KPDH Also, Bruno singing "let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow, let it goooo" in "All of You" at the end of this movie was definitely a nod to "Let It Go" from Frozen. If I'm not mistaken they even list it in the end credits of Encanto

There’s an interesting backstory on Coco. Disney tried to trademark “Day of the Dead,” which is a giant Mexican holiday and both solemn and fun. It would be like trademarking “Christmas.” So creepy and offensive at the same time, and very obvious where I live (Southern California). There’s a cartoonist, Lalo Alcaraz, who did a bitter drawing of “Muerto Mouse” showing how ridiculous and offensive it was. You know what Disney did? They hired him. They actually hired Lalo and told him, “tell us everything and add stuff in.” The results are that Coco is really, really good, way better than if they’d decided to ignore him. (He said the one thing he couldn’t convince them about was the abuela (grandma) taking her slipper off and throwing it at the kids. Evidently, it’s a thing.

So, if you watch the door to the home after she places the doorknob, it has Mirabel in the front with her family in the background. I think that this is her door, and her gift is her family. As the new candle holder, the house recognizes this time that Mirabel is completing the home, and the family have all acknowledge her gift to bring them together. The doorknob is their amendment to the candle for them and the candle to make things right and make the house feel like home, not just a room feel like a home.

I really want to start by saying thank you. I really hope that this works out as your next journey. Heck, I know that I joined your Patreon _because_ of your Encanto music reactions, and I just had to see the full reaction. I really appreciate how genuine you are with these, and I am looking forward to seeing you dive further into Disney. I know they get a lot of grief over a lot of things, but... if you come in with an open mind, there really is a lot of magic to be had. Mind you, I'm writing this as someone who just went to see Zootopia 2 earlier today. First off, there are lots of worthwhile movies to watch, which you've already been getting recommended. Tangled, Moana, Coco, Frozen... all of them are great. I strongly recommend that you look into things like Treasure Planet and more of the Pixar movies, which tend to be less musicals than the core Disney Princess movies are, but they are very good. Heck, Zootopia and Zootopia 2 are great movies in my opinion. Now, with Encanto... I'm one of the people who believe that Mirabel was always destined to be the new head of the household. Aside from Abuela, she's the only one who really directly interact with the house like it is a person... and part of the family. The true struggle is that Abuela's miracle was one created in trauma, which shaped how she interacted with it and everyone else in the family and community. Nice catch that Mariano looks a lot like Abuelo - I think that Abuela subconsciously picked up on that and had been trying to let Isabella have the life that she wished she'd gotten to have. But, ultimately, Abuela's miracle was brittle... fragile. It didn't have room for imperfections because Abuela was leading the family out of fear. Mirabel, though, was able to meet people where they were, not where she demanded that they be. For Mirable, Antonio's gift of being able to talk to animals is wonderful for _him,_ rather than something to figure out how to find a use for. Mirabel is a name that comes from the Spanish word for seeing, and she is the one who sees the family members for who they are. She is the new root of the miracle, and she will be able to nurture and grow it so wonderfully. Messily, but beautifully. Oh, and as for tearing up at this movie, don't worry. I'm here at 40 still crying at Dos Orugitas and the whole finale of the movie. You're not alone. You're in good company.

This movie is a perfect example how certain old school traditions in cultural families is often Generational Trauma in disguise. This paints a really beautiful picture of how an elders trauma can be passed down through many rules, expectations, and tradition and how those cycles are continued. Also shows really well how those who deviate from that often are shunned in those families but are in a weird way the glue of the family..if they choose to stay in hopes of one day being the catalyst to ending the suffering of their families generational trauma and being dedicated to that mission.

I subscribed on YouTube and here after seeing you watch Bruno. I like your vibe and it’s neat to see these things I love through new eyes. I’m at ‘Waiting on a Miracle’ and I already can’t wait to see your reaction at the end. The best part about movies today is that the generation making them is emotionally educated and are making sure entertainment starts educating young. It doesn’t end there, we didn’t have a lot of this emotional validation and the way these are written gives us emotional catharsis while making sure our kids grow up with a better mental health environment than we had. I really look forward to watching more with you!

Now that you've seen Hamilton and you realize the guy playing Alexander (Lin Manuel Miranda) wrote all the songs and the whole musical Hamilton.... well had anyone told you yet that Lin also wrote the Encanto songs? Amazing lyricist hey. So when you here the fast rap parts in the Encanto songs you can think of what he wrote for Hamilton like Satisfied and Guns n Ships

Im very late to the party, and I dont know if anyone mentioned this months ago, but Stephanie (Rosa) recorded Waiting on a Miracle while in active labor and having contractions in the studio, but she wanted to finish the recording so she didnt tell anyone lol

I still think it is interesting that you had it right early on in the movie. A kid might assume that the personalities of the characters are fitting the "powers" but instead each gift is an extension of the personality. The creators basically gave that away in a tweet when they pointed out the one connection that is not int he movie: Camilo is a "theater kid" who likes to take on different roles. Peppa's mood changes like the weather, Bruno worries about everybody's future, Marietta wants everyone to be well. Which also kinda explains how Dolores "superhearing" works because it isn't what you think: Dolores loves gossip and she can hear everyone in the Encanto. It isn't like very sound was amplified for her which we can see because she never has issues with loud noises. And therefore she can also not pinpoint where people are; she simply hears them like they were close to her. Dos Oruguitas and the two different versions of how Alma "lost" Pedro are also very interesting to analyze. Because in the "kid friendly" version Pedro just vanishes with their pursuers whihc leaves open whether he simply left with them. EDIT 2: For which it is sad that you didn't listen to the English version of the song during the credits. But in Dos Oruguitas it becomes obvious that Pedro was slain and that Alma's outburst of grief and despair preceeded the magical burst of the candle that inturn vanquished their pursuers. In the beginning of the song it still seems like Alma and Pedro were the caterpillars who held on too tight and had to let go to live their seperate futures... which fits Pedro leaving with the pursuers. But later int he song it becomes clearer that Alma had to let go of her family members and especially Mirabel had to let go of Alma. Because they both possess the miracle of transformation. Alma had turned from a wife to a widow but more importantly the matriarch of her community. Now she can become a grandmother as Mirabel becomes the matriarch. And the miracle off transformation they both posess then can also be seen when Mirabel "is given" a new miracle... or rather enchants the doorknob. But it is now built on a new foundation. Where Alma unconsciously used grief and despair as the source, Mirabel felt recognition and empowerment. Mirable does not get a gift because like Alma she is the one who gives them. EDIT: Can I add how ugly it is that patreon tells me to add a new line with shift+enter but when I save the comment it deletest that?

Mirabel's name, rather than 'mirror ball' (which is a cute idea though!), means 'wonderous' or... in interpretation... 'miracle.' I'm sure someon's already pointed this out but wanted to add my input.

The background music in this movie has Carlos Vives songs. He is a very famous musician from Colombia which is the setting of the movie. The round pastries they are eating are cheese arepas and they are delicious! I have seen this movie before but I cried and laughed with you. Thank you!!!
