Those were her trophies she won as a child through singing, dancing, pageants, etc. She was “Ms. 3rd Ward” in Houston. The 3rd Ward is what the area in Houston she grew up in was called. She knows it all too well unfortunately.

This album was a surprise drop. Traditionally artist did lots of promo and released albums on Tuesday. One Friday the 13th Beyonce dropped this whole visual album and now everyone releases albums on Friday!! 😅 you’ll hear her say “change the game with that digital drop…” and “probably won’t make no money off this…oh well”

After finishing the album, I recommend watching the mini-documentary about it to better understand this work of art.

I like your take on Haunted. The art once released is always open to interpretation. I do know Beyonce has said she was thinking about Jay Z so much while he was away touring, it was like he was haunting her and there was no way if he had her like that she wasn’t on his mind just as must. I always felt like the different people and scenarios were the ghosts left behind, the rooms started out empty when she brought her things in but filled with the music started. No Angel- Houston is divided in to areas called wards. That scene was shot in the 4th ward. She likes that he not perfect, whatever that may be, not necessarily that he has a bad side. Also, she had just had a baby and wanted people to know mothers could still be sexy/sexual.

Fun fact - this album was truly a surprise drop by every means. According to one of her dancers, the dancers, extras and many in the videos had to wear special ear plugs that played something different so they wouldn’t hear the actual songs until the album release. Those NDAs were powerful. Lol. This album is the reason music now releases on Fridays instead of Tuesday. Beyoncé is a mastermind.

I am here laughing my ass off watching your reactions. 🤣😂🤣😂. This album came out a week before I was going to see her in concert (at that time). No warning or anything. My first reaction was “what the hell is this”? After three listens, I was all in. At the concert people I was near, we were discussing it. No songs was sung except one(Xo). This album was the beginning of her doing exactly what she wanted, how she wanted. This album, the sensuality of it was the show that once she became a mother, her sexuality was still present, heightened even. She said that motherhood doesn’t dim a women’s sexuality. Every album from now on will be different, not what you would expect. That is what makes her stand out from all other artist. Also, your interpretation at the end is pretty on point about this album.

Self-Titled is her post-baby album. It incudes alot of themes about reclaiming your sexuality and reminding yourself you’re more than just a mother. Coming to terms with the changes in your life and body post pregnancy and motherhood. It deals with insecurities, love, lust, desire, and returning to self; in both a raw and sensual manner.

This album was very sensual but It also includes a track specifically dealing with her miscarriage and working through that grief and the sense of loss and feeling like your body has failed. Then there is a track about the fears that come with being pregnant again- and the hopes you have and how badly you want to make your body hold onto something so important to you. The album has strong themes about coming to terms with what your body is capable of and listening to what it wants and needs and feeing no shame in that.

people truly thought that Beyoncé’s career highs were over after 4 because that album was essentially a “flop” and she went radio silent for so long, only for her to surprise drop this on a random day in December of 2013 and quite literally changed the day music drops. i mean that is so insane to think about objectively that it really grinds my gears that people call her overrated or not a legend, that is Legendary shit!! this album came out my freshman year of college and was a game changer for me personally, just even learning about the idea of feminism and being sexually free

Yea unfortunately the cotton balls and orange juice trend was very popular for models in the 90s/2000s. The cotton expands in your stomach bc of the orange juice. Keeps you full so you can stay thin.

Great reaction! Loved your interpretation of Haunted! Very interesting idea. I know we have several weeks on this era before we get there, but for Lemonade, you have to listen to the album first, then watch the film. The album and the film give two different meanings. Also, the visuals are so packed as well as the lyrics, that if you don't listen to it first, you will miss soooo much. And some of the songs are altered and shortened in the film.

Just a warning. From this album on every album is going to sound completely different )and incredible!). You are going to have the same shocked reaction to each album going forward. Because each album is her leveling up and expressing herself and her growth. Also remember that not only is she a mother at this point with a different perspective, but she is continually getting enough power and control over her own career and that will show in the choices she makes in her music. Lastly, she has a large wealth of knowledge of music history, and that also plays a part in the choices she makes going forward and in how she makes the music sound so different every time a new album comes out.
