BOSSED UP MY GOAT 🐐

Jeqspel

Love this musical!! Would love to recommend the filmed production of NEXT to Normal to add to your list.

Monika Lockpick

oooh, for the next batch, maybe Cats (NOT the 2019 movie, please not that one, maybe afterwards to see what they did to the songs, *shudder*) or into the woods

wisegirl013

Musical recommendation Hairspray the 2007 movie with Zac Effron and Queen Latifah

Shaunna Emmons

Luke Les Mis is my absolute fave musical. I saw it on stage for the first time when I was about 13 and fell in love with it. I don’t know that you can watch the full stage musical anywhere but in person, however the 10th and 25th anniversary concerts are AMAZING!! Little tidbits for you- Anne Hathaway’s mother played Fantine on stage, the girl who plays Eponine in the movie was the current stage Eponine as well (at the time of the movie) Colm Wilkerson (the bishop who saves ValJean) is the original ValJean from the 1985 stage cast that performed this in the West End. Also the live show is performed “in the round”. Enjoy the show!!! Love your reactions as always

Eamber

Movie recommendations: In the Heights (created by Lin-Manuel Miranda) Hairspray the movie Sweeney Todd the movie (stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter)

Maisie

Hairspray (2007) is amazing! It's like a shot in the arm of pure joy.

Leslie

For the next batch I recommend In the Heights. The original musical is by Lin-Manuel Miranda and there is a 2021 movie.

Faen_Galan

Do the 25th anniversary edition, the cast they have for it is amazing.

Relax Time

I've never interacted with you on patreon before and this doesn't have anything to do with this movie, or any but i'd just like to recommend you listen to RAYE'S new AMAZING album "THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.". It came out yesterday and her story telling and vocals are something I think you would greatly enjoy and appreciate a lot. Not to mention the instrumentals on this album are just perfectly crafted. I have been a watcher on youtube for years and don't believe you have listened to any RAYE songs yet. Her vocals almost have an Adele strength to them but are totally unique in their own way. And every song is like a full, grand orchestral production that I have no doubt you will love. I love all your reactions!

Jeqspel

Also newsies on Broadway and phantom of the opera

Domi

I would love for you to watch Next to Normal, it's my favourite musical and an emotional rollercoaster, but at least there are no strictly evil people and everyone is genuinely trying their best. The uncensored proshot is available on National Theatre at Home, if you want I can send you a song list with timestamps (although some song names spoil major plot points)

Michael Merriweather

I saw this in theaters with some friends and we were all like “no” mostly because of Russell Crowe but maybe watching with you will make it better! BUT DREAMGIRLS IS *chefs kiss*

Maisie

As difficult as it is to watch something like this, I have to say, it's really therapeutic for us to know there are genuinely good guys out there. 🙏

Gianna

Please your next reaction is has to be "in the Heights"!! 🙏🏻

Ohms

I would LOVE if he reacted to Dreamgirls!!!

Anika

Sweeney Todd movie

AgaeteOfficial

he should react to Next to Normal, just for the pure pain and interesting commentary on mental illness

TheHud257

Well I guess I know what I'm doing with my evening

Salome Heidinger-Speer

Movie recommendations: Burlesque, Wonka, Tick Tick Boom, descendants

Amy Bedster

10th Anniversary! 100% also this is my alltime favourite musical

Amy Bedster

PLEASE west side story the recent version. its phenomenal and in the heights

Amy Bedster

the BEST thing is that the bishop guy who helps valjean was the original valjean

Nate Ming

Next up: play ARM JOE, the fan-made Les Mis fighting game

Mary Hatch

This is one of my favorite musicals. It shows such a range of humanity and emotion. Some musical recommendations I’d love to see: hairspray, newsies, Mamma Mia (for more Amanda) and Mamma Mia 2, in the heights, my fair lady, Chicago, tick tick boom

Vicki

This is one of my favourite musicals to see in the theatre. I've seen the stage version many times and it moves me every time. Hearing these songs sung live is a goosebump moment. Samantha Barks who plays adult Eponine was discovered after competing in a tv show called "I'd Do Anything" to try and win the role of Nancy in the musical Oliver. She has played the role of Elsa in the stage version of Frozen on the West End. Loved the casting of Hugh Jackman & Anne Hathaway in this movie version. Hugh actually started his performing career in musical theatre. When I saw this in the cinema his rendition of Valjean's sililoquy broke me. I sobbed so much (there was snot🙈) BTW, like Wicked the movie, all of the singing was done live on set. Enjoyed watching your reaction to this (& all of the other musicals & Disney movies you have reacted to so far) and once again I cried right along with you. I would like to see you react to the movie version of the stage musical Dear Evan Hansen. The music is by Pasek & Paul who wrote the music for The Greatest Showman.

Faen_Galan

1:45:20 - fun fact, this song “Suddenly” was added specifically for the movie version of Les Mis, as this section from leaving the inn and the following scene had felt empty and they needed something to fill it

Faen_Galan

1:49:00 - fun fact, Javert kept getting demoted in the force because Val Jean kept getting away, that’s why he’s so determined to get him back

Michael

Next movie: The Lego Movie, for the happy vibes.

Faen_Galan

Hey Luke, if you haven’t seen it yet, a musical you could listen too is Six The Musical, if you want a good playlist Mortius, Casper Fox and Peter Barber all shared a playlist between each other

Faen_Galan

Another musical you could also listen to is Hadestown. Mortius and Casper Fox have a good playlist for it as well

Hridayinee

Oooh I love that! How special

Amy Bedster

I know! I think it’s a beautiful detail

Amy Bedster

HADESTOWN I LOVE HADESTOWN

Hridayinee

Oooh so hard the beginning with Fantine. It's dark and heavy and I'm crying along with you. Such a hard watch. It gets better.

Amy Bedster

LUKE THE TITLE IS LES MISERABLES. WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING??

TheKnightwatchOfficial

The heads-up was sorta in the title: Les Miserables. The Miserables.

Chloe

please do tick tick boom! its a musical with andrew garfield, vanessa hudgens, and it was directed by lin manuel miranda (hamilton). super poignant with such good songs!

Domi

I would wait with this until the proshot comes out tbh, they just announced the cinema release and I'm guessing once that is done it will hit streaming services

Faen_Galan

2:40:15 - so the song “On My Own” had it’s original position moved, it was originally in act 2 just after they build the barricade, Marius asks Eponine to go and find Cosete and to give her a letter. When she’s on her way to deliver the letter is when she sings On My Own. In the 25th anniversary performance Samantha Barks is also Eponine for that

Faen_Galan

Didn’t know they were going to do a pro shot for this. Did they announce who’s been cast for that?

Julie Lyles

I recommend Newsies, Hairspray, Legally Blonde the Musical or In the Heights (lots of joy and energy to counterbalance The Miserable musical…)

M3rlin

Movie recommendation: "Mamma Mia" starring Amanda Seyfried and "The Rise of The Guardians" a absolutely wonderful movie that was very underrated when it came out (funnily enough, one of the voice actors isHhugh Jackman)

mellyxmiell

I am so ready for this and I am also not 😭😭😭

Leigh-Sherri Hays

Tangled. Chicago. Grease?? In The Heights. Turning red is also good but not exactly musical.. but Disney/Pixar

Leigh-Sherri Hays

I think if you don't speak French.. you can delude yourself to not being able determine anything about the movie from the title 😂🫠

Sue Norrell

You must watch The Phantom of the Opera the 25th Anniversary at Royal Albert Hall. This is not a concert .. it’s the full play. Absolutely spectacular…

Yogesh Mehta

Into the Woods would be a major palate cleanser after this

Andrew

Thank god someone has finally seen the same movie that I saw. Everyone else on the internet seems to have seen some sort of weird alternate reality version where the whole movie sucks and none of the actors can sing.

Andrew

Btw, the reason Javert offed himself at the end was because Valjean's kindness shattered his whole worldview in the same way that the Bishop's kindness shattered Valjean's worldview at the beginning, but Javert's revelation came too late and he was too deeply entrenched to put the pieces back together. The leitmotif is the same in both songs because it is drawing an explicit parallel between these two moments in these two men's lives.

Maisie

They can sing, but they do a lot of speak-singing and whisper-singing, which dilutes the power of the vocals you might experience during the actual stage performance. I think that's where most of the complaints stem from.

Mads

I remember the first time I ever swore in front of my parents was singing along to Master of the House laying in front of our fireplace on Thanksgiving because I didn’t know that bastard and shit were “bad” words lmao

Linda Wolf

Today is my birthday. Your video of Les Miz was the best gift I recevied. It is my favorite musical.

Linda Wolf

Please consider reviewing Fiddler On The Roof. A wonderful musical.

Kelly

I loved this reaction ❤️ I remember seeing this in theaters and walked out sobbing lol one of my favorite musicals though. If you want to watch a happy musical I think you should do a reaction to Mamma Mia even though you’ve seen it in the past. It may be nice to revisit and hear all of the fun songs again I know I always enjoy that movie 😊

AdamPacio.art

My friend, you have a good and gentle heart. This comes from a French novel of the same name by none other than Victor Hugo. The novel Les Miserables is incredibly long and drawn out and thorough in a way which causes its own literary pain just from trying to read it. The 19th century in France was quite an ordeal. Although the book detailed a single barricade that went up at the end of the First Republic in the early 1800s, it was published in the 1840s and it caught the imagination of the Paris citizens. After Napoleon III's disastrous declaration of war against Prussia (modern day Germany plus) the Prussians deposed the nephew of the original Napoleon and in the change of power in Paris, a group of communists seized power, known as the Paris Commune. They did so by mimicking the tactics in Les Mis, only they were much better organized and put up barricades at chokepoints entering and maneuvering in the city. The Paris Commune only lasted a week, during which Gustave Courbet, the artist who arguably kicked off the entire Modern Art movement of the last 150 years, drove the crowd to tear down a famous monument to Napoleon, the Vendome Column. When Paris was retaken by the remains of the french army a week later, they decided Courbet was to repay the full massive cost to replace the column, even though it had been the crowd that pulled it down. Les Mis is not a fun bit of literature, but it definitely played active roles in French history in trying to throw off the yoke of aristocracy. Victor Hugo also famously wrote the novel, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", which to this day is known as the singularly most evil and depressing Disney adaptation there is. In Disney's Hunchback is unequivocally the single worst villain of all times, Judge Claude Vrolo. And it's all because even Disney couldn't make Victor Hugo "light". He was so depressing and dark an author he properly should have been Russian. ;)

Mikayla

Like 10 minutes into this, I was like “why did nobody warn him?!” lol If you want happy vibes, Mamma Mia is my go-to feel good movie!!

mellyxmiell

I was not ready but fully enjoyed and appreciate it 💕 and will be mending a headache with you lol

Marcel Heezen

Thank you for this reaction amazing to see that the emotions came through. Would love for you to see Les Misérables: The 10th or 25th Anniversary stage version, the experience of seeing the stage is amazing. Alternative movie suggestion that i have not seen yet: i really like the music in Hairspray!

Sue Norrell

Another one you should consider watching is Miss Saigon… another 25th Anniversary performance.

Domi

It's the OBC minus fates/workers, was filmed about a year ago

Celestia Thorn

We actually did our Marching Band Field show with all this music, around the time when it first came out, in highschool!! It still makes me sob when I watch this. <3

B3thbakes

Oh, yes! I am here for this! 👌

B3thbakes

This whole movie is basically a whole song 🤣

B3thbakes

At what point do you realise its recorded live vocals wise..?

Susan Deans

This is my favourite musical though not one I can enjoy very often because I literally ball my eyes out every single time. However I have seen the stag show MULTIPLE times both in the West End and here in Glasgow when it tours. Samantha Barks is my favourite Eponine I have seen live. Her voice is absolutely breathtaking to witness live and she does not disappoint in this movie. I became a fan of hers when she was on an Andrew Lloyd Webber competition called “I’d do anything” to become the next Nancy from Oliver. One of the performances she did was of Defying Gravity from Wicked and she killed it (I believe she was about 18/19 at the time) I love everyone in this movie but if we’re going by vocals she blows every single one of them out of the water in my opinion.

B3thbakes

2:35:44 Fun fact.. she plays this in the stage musical. This is her part!

B3thbakes

Shes called Samantha something.. I can't remember. But if fell in love with her voice. Watching the old Andrew Lloyd Webber TV show when they were casting the Oliver musical.. I cant remember what the show was called but she did a bunch of auditions for Nancy. She was incredible! Its on YouTube if you wanna react to it. Shes so amazing!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏

Amanda T

The singing was done live on set.

Amy Bedster

also this movie was mainly filmed in england. i auditioned to be an extra. javerts suicide scene was filmed in Bath

B3thbakes

In my mind. With Javier.. He is questioning himself.. if he was wrong about ValJean.. and has pursued him for years.. who else was he wrong about.. or too hard on.. he will be questioning every judgement hes made.. If he was so wrong and this is a good man.. whats he been doing? And doing it in the lord's name.. remember when he thought he made a false report.. he told him to press charges against him.. the law../the rules.. are the most important to him. Even against himself.. he passed judgement on himself..

B3thbakes

Thats the one! Thank you!

Tinkerdoodle

The Birdcage - it’s a comedy. You NEED a comedy.

FangyFae

Samantha Barks was an original Nancy on 'I'd do anything.' She was my favourite.

Trina Key

If you like Helena Bonham Carter I would like to recomend "Sweeney Todd" and "Corpse Bride".

BookishWitch

you gotta watch the 2024 pro shot of Next to normal

FangyFae

I always seem to miss the poll on YouTube... Oh well ^_^; I don't know how many of these you may have seen but I'll give you a list, though some of them are not so much musicals as movies with singing in them and some are Disney Channel movies rather than feature films. Into the Woods Phantom of the Opera (the movie) Evita (Movie, Madonna) Pitch Perfect 1, 2 & 3 Enchanted Disenchanted (Enchanted 2) Descendants 1, 2 & 3 (disney channel movies) - loved these Descendants The Rise of Red (has a different cast in it, wasn't as keen on as the first 3) Tangled - So glad you are doing this one, I love it. The Princess & The Frog Not sure how far back would be too far back....

Mary Hatch

The music in this musical is so powerful, in fact, as an American I got a little bit of hope from a performance by the military choir choosing to sing “do you hear the people sing” for our current president when asked to perform. It was an intentional choice and says a lot about how most Americans feel about what’s been happening in our country. It’s a song that’s played/sung at many protests

B3thbakes

It is very much a movie where you cry most of the way through and finish it crying but with abit of a smile... its incredible but a roller coaster thats alot of down..

Hercules

I feel like you would LOVE Six, the musical. It is just six powerhouse women, based off the six wives of King Henry VIII, and put it the styles of the pop divas

Hercules

You would LOVE the Mamma Mia movies with Amanda Siefred! It’s joyful and fun and the music is amazing

Andrew

You need to sing powerfully when you're on stage where most of the audience can't read your facial expressions, but this is not necessarily true when you have a camera right in your face. I think they made the correct choice for the new medium and for the tone they were trying to achieve.

BB

Hey, Luke! I've got a couple more upbeat musical suggestions I'd love to see you react to! Rocky Horror Picture Show, available on Disney+, is a cult classic: campy, glorious,a riot. You haven't lived til you seen Tim Curry's thighs. I mean, songs. Also on Disney+ there's the movie adaptation of a Sondheim classic, Into the Woods. It's got its emotional moments, but it's fun. Also a repeat performance from Anne Hathaway! And quite unlike anything you've done so far, The Blues Brothers, available on youtube. It's an action comedy blues musical romp with stellar cast and cameos and just FUN Also, for quite a while, held the record for movie that most destroyed cars lol.

Super FanCom

With you and your love of horror, i feel you might enjoy Repo The Gentic Opera or Devil's Carnival, it was directed by the Saw 2 guy,

Chiara

The finale of Les Mis always leave me in tears, every time, in theatre, in cinema, at my home, everywhere. It's just the best

Jennifer Cash

Tangled would be a great palate cleanser lol.

Jennifer Cash

I have some ideas for the next batch: Tick, Tick, BOOM Hairspray Matilda the Musical Come From Away Mean Girls the Musical They’re a mix of happy and sad…MUCH more positive than negative. I think you should watch Tick, Tick, BOOM before you think about watching RENT also.

Taelor Elverum

The ending at the convent makes me weep EVERY. SINGLE. TIME

Jamal Paletko-Ali

He needs happy happy-- Hairspray would be fine :-) of course Rent if we want some more tears /duck

Nicki Bolton

Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Into the Woods, Rent, Princess and the Frog, Dear Evan Hansen, Hercules (Disney), Mulan (Didney), Beauty and the Beast (Disney)

Caroline Vitanza

Mamma Mia is a great next watch for something HAPPY and FUN!!!!

Caroline Vitanza

After Jean Valjean let Javert go when he could have killed him, Javert was angry because now he was indebted to someone he believed was no one but a criminal. When he let Jean Valjean walk away with Marius, he was disgusted with himself. He didn't want to live in a world where he was in debt to the man who he spent his whole career chasing. That's how great his hatred was for him.

Michelle Allen

All I can do at this moment is give you a hug 🤗 when I saw the first bit post on YouTube I said, “oh nooo Luke no!” Poor thing you didn’t even have tissues handy ❤️ I loved experiencing this with you even though it was a rough one. I also, with other commenters think you’d get a nice cheer-up with Hairspray 😊 Oh, btw, the Master of the House 10th anniversary performance is golden. So cheeky and fun. Those two characters being the lightest bit of Les Mis, I get slight enjoyment out of watching them slither around quite arrogantly and somehow survive the entire production. I laughed out loud when you said, “how are they still around?!!!” 😂😂😂

Michelle Allen

Such a good point. I think it was compounded when he saw the bodies of Eponine and poor little Gavrosh lying innocently from the acts of “the law” and this further pushed him to a perspective he’d been blind to up to that point. Seemed like it was too much for him to make sense of. ValJean in his mind was supposed to be the worst of the worst. But he saves Fantine, Cosette, Marius AND HIM! He lived by such a rigid moral code the two conflicting views couldn’t be reconciled.

Catherine Dorney

Javert is an ass but is a sympathetic character by the end. He is a man dedicated to the law and his job. Everything is black and white. Once he realizes Val jeans intentions are real and true he was so tormented. He chased this 'criminal' who had shown responsibility care love and selflessness to others. And then spared his life and was saving an innocent man in the sewer. Javier could not reconcile his beliefs. He understood at the end that Val Jean was a good man but he could not keep going with these obstacles.

Sunami Stelling

Please do the Prince of Egypt soon! Its got some real bangers.

Martin Vaclavik

If you need recomendations then let me pitch Prince of Egypt, a legendary animated musical movie, and you seem to be in need of something more fun, so let's watch Mamma Mia! the ABBA musical! :DDD

turner husak family

Youre breaking me asking for a happy part in a movie literally translated the miserables

fluffqueen91

I knew you were gonna have a rough time, this is definitely one of those musicals you gotta be in the right mood for...I watch it every few years, because it's SO rough but also SO dang good. I love watching all these movies with you, it's great to see your blind reactions to all the moments that have touched fans so deeply! Other musicals I'd recommend to watch at some point are: - Phantom of the Opera: the movie looks pretty, but the 25th anniversary does a good job with visuals and is better in terms of vocals (just my opinion, ofc) - Into the Woods: again, the movie is fine, but the stage recording is PEAK - Six: I don't think there's a stage recording (yet!), so ask someone to give you a good playlist! - Hadestown: the stage recording is being released in theaters July 24, so hopefully there'll be a streaming option after that...but it's also cool if you wanna just go see it in theaters, b/c I want you to have the best experience possible!

Sunami Stelling

When I watched this for the first time, I was in the middle of my first love. An unrequited one. I had had crushes before be he was different. I learned that love is stepping aside for their happiness. So when I watched the song "on my own" I was bloody gutted. I ugly cried in the cinema! It sucked.

FinelyTaylored

you should definitely react to the oscars medley and also their rehearsal for it!! AND if you're blown away by the singing voices here (which are great) you should absolutely react to the 25th anniversary concert version they did at RAH.

Dawn Stafford

13:31 Colm Wilkinson, one of the best Musical talents of all time. He played the part of Jean Valjean to perfection and was the first Phantom of the Opera.

Sleepy me

Yes please do this version, it is more complete than the 10th anniversary and performed at the O2 with Samantha Barks as Eponine same as the film 🌟

Tinkerdoodle

More importantly, it’s got some humor in it. Poor guy needs a break from the emotional roller coaster.

Dawn Stafford

Yes, Russell Crowe had musical background. Look up "30 Odd Foot of Grunts". His band in Australia.

Lynn Cook

please, please please do in the heights movie. It’s a Lin-Manuel Miranda movie of his first Broadway show.

형근 조

you gotta watch musical les miserables 10th anniversary or 25th anniversary in london

Serra Shi Maco

The original book of Les Misérables was written by Victor Hugo (the same one behind the hunchback of notre dame) and it's actually widely believed to be semi-autobiografic of his life, with Victor Hugo being Marius. The Barricade they build in the movie is something that actually happened in real life known as the June Revolution that took place on June the 5th in 1832.

Pepe Valdez

I was right there crying with you at the end brother. I hope you watch LaLa Land soon, I am sure you'll love it!

Dawn Stafford

I am truly sorry that no one gave you a "head's up". Maybe you might have not chosen to immerse yourself otherwise. It is extremely PAINFUL to watch, I know. But it is so brilliantly performed. I dragged my husband (who hates musicals) to the theatre to watch. I watched him become so invested in the characters and story. He was bawling by the end, which is itself noteworthy. He rarely, if ever cries. The very next night we were back at the same theatre with our daughter and the fiance in tow. HE had been so overwhelming taken with the movie that he wanted others to experience it too. My daughter was of course in tears, but like my husband, her fiance was wrecked by the performances. He thanked us for introducing him to this type of art . My oldest son loves music just like me. He auditioned for a part in his senior highschool musical singing "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables". The recruiting teacher was in tears when she called me personally to say that he had the part and had a true future in music. She was correct. He did, and is still proving her right. If his Father and I are in attendance at one of his performances, he always sings "Bring Him Home"!

Dawn Stafford

And as others have already noted. Please watch the 25th anniversary celebration at Royal Albert Hall. It's worth it.

Dawn Stafford

As a sidenote from something you said. God doesn't chose sides. They put it all in God's name, He doesn't chose "political human allies". They never mattered. This is a much, much bigger picture.

vincencash

If you are looking for more musical movies, I would love to see you react to Sweeny Todd with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter or Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor

Talia Adams

Les Mis is definitely one of my favorites but that was a tough recommendation for you, wow! I think the next one definitely needs to be more upbeat! I would recommend Hairspray (2007). It has an incredibly stacked cast and although it deals with a heavier subject matter it does it in a really uplifting way and has great dancey music!!

Bubbles

Seconding In The Heights movie reaction and Mama Mia 1 (I'd still be down for a rewatch) and 2! Six is another one that would be super fun although it sadly doesn't have a movie or adaptation (as far as I know) so it'd be though a playlist of some sort. (it's more poppy and upbeat except for one song can be pretty heavy fair warning)

Bubbles

I love Les Mis bc its beautifully crafted with gorgeously depressing music. Your line of I hate how good it is because its painful is so so true! For me it's one of those movies that I can't watch too many times bc god damn it's one of the most depressing stories out there and I forgot the extent of that in some scenes until I rewatched it with you. Thank you for the reaction even if it was painful and so sorry you didn't get a heads up for this movie.

Bubbles

I love Les Mis bc I think its beautifully crafted and has gorgeously depressing music but it’s def one of those movies/ plays that I can’t watch too many times bc god damn is it one of the most depressing stories out there and I forgot the extent of that until I rewatched it with you. I am so sorry you didn’t get a heads up! Me the whole reaction when you were asking for it get happier: Oh no….😭

Whitebeard

First time watching this. Crying all the way through wow. Amazing.

Ida L

i just got to the end of the "i dreamed a dream" part and he just said "i hope its all up hill from here".... ooooh buddy...

AdamLovesMusic

So 1500 francs (1500 for your sacrifice) back in 1815/16 was equivalent to about 6 thousand dollars today.

AdamLovesMusic

Also I know this movie hit you hard. They story gets me every time! I would suggest listening to the Les Mis 10th anniversary concert as I think it’s the best of the best.

Jenna I

Seconding Hairspray! Its definitely a lighter and fun film!

Jenna I

Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for this role. Absolutely deserved she kills it ❤️

Dawn Stafford

It took me a couple of days to watch with you. I knew what to expect , but it still drained me. You did it more than justice. I can only watch it again now with a few years in between. It hurts. But the music is always magical. The cast did the story honour.

Lisa Spodak

PLEASE do Come From Away!! (Don't read anything about it first... )

Houzer88

The whole movie was sung live on set. Everything you hear is audio from the actors as they are filming. They used hidden ear pieces for the cast to hear a live piano accompaniment.

Heather Busby

Love your reactions always! If you haven't done them yet I would suggest the musicals "Tick, Tick, Boom!" (that's on Netflix only I think) followed by "Rent" (I would suggest the movie as it had most of the original Broadway cast) in that order. If you ever react to "Phantom of the Opera" please skip the movie version and go for the 25th Anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall!

Graham Turner

Hey Luke, sorry to see that this was such a tough watch for you but thank you for persevering and being so emotionally honest, as always with your reactions. In case you don’t know yet most of the film was shot in the UK - at Pinewood Studios as well as various actual locations (e.g. Greenwich & Chatham). The opening sequence was filmed at Portsmouth Historical Dockyard so may well be one you have visited. The spectacular location for Javert’s demise is the Avon Weir in Bath. For some lighter watches you might consider Hairspray or Chicago, or for some more classic musicals Grease or Singin’ In The Rain 🎭🎶

Breezee92

Hi Luke. I am a new subscriber to your patreon but have been watching a few of your YouTube videos for a while now. I am so glad to see you reacting to these musicals. Sorry to hear this was a tough one for you to watch. Yes, Les Miserables literally does mean the miserables so unfortunately most of the movie is heartbreaking. I can't wait to see you watching more musical movies. One movie I recommend you to watch is Rent, which is an iconic musical by Jonathan Larsen who sadly passed away before it was first premiered on Broadway. There is also a filmed live Broadway version of rent. I recommend watching both!

Hugabug008

Seconded!!! Would love for you to react to Come From Away!

Kelsea Mai

You want happy musicals? You’re talking my language! Mamma Mia 1&2, Wonka (my new favourite musical), The Princess Bride (a classic but not a musical), Hairspray, Matilda (love both old and new versions), Enchanted, Descendants movies, Ella Enchanted, Strange Magic, Tangled, Sound Of Music, My Fair Lady, Singing In The Rain, Calamity Jane, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Annie and Pitch Perfect. All I could think of that again is not dark like this without thinking about it for too long…

Esther Blanchette

The bishop is played by Colm Wilkinson, the first (and always the best) Jean Valjean. I had the honor and joy of seeing him perform in NY, then seeing him on the 10th anniversary special (dream cast), and now as the bishop. Full circle. 💜💜💜

Bubbles

Any of these would be great!!

M K7001

I gotta throw in an oldie but a goodie. Hello Dolly is my favourite musical and the only reason i saw it was cause of wall-e lmao

Faith Marcelo

You definitely should watch either the 10th or 25th Anniversary Concerts after the movie, because they're featuring most of the greatest performers ever

Ashley Elliott

I want to give you my take on the Javert suicide. If you listen to the song, he is very lost, very conflicted. Yes, he let Jean Valjean go, but he isn't really stricken with guilt in my opinion. He is conflicted in his relationship with the law and upholding it, as well as his feelings of guilt if he took Jean Valjean's life after he spared his own life. So yea there is guilt to it, but he just cannot get over this need to uphold the law and he feels he failed himself. He fails if he lives in a world where Jean is free, but he is also failing if he takes Jean Valjean's life...so to him, there really is no choice but to die. When Jean Valjean spared him, it actually killed him because it put him in that spot. He can't kill him but he can't live with himself letting a criminal go (and yes in Javert's eyes, Jean is a thief and always will be a thief)

Also, one of my FAVORITE songs in this movie is Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, and the line that sends me over the edge is when he says they sang about tomorrow but tomorrow never came. That killllllls me every time and the raw emotion....it's ugh...pure perfection and so damn heartbreaking

Samantha Banks had such a great voice and full of emotions. I still remembered I was blown away when I was watching this movie in theaters.

If you want more amazement of maybe actors you didn’t know could sing or had a background in theatre, then you have to watch Into the woods

You probably won't see this, but I highly recommend watching an older production of this musical. There is a version of the 10th anniversary performance of Les Mis on youtube. The quality isn't great because it's old, but it's incredible. No shade to Hugh Jackman, who has incredible musical theater chops, but Valjean is a role beyond him. We don't even need to talk about Russell Crowe as Javert. You really ought to hear how these songs are supposed to sound. "Bring Him Home" and "Stars" are both some of the most difficult songs to sing in musical theater history. You should hear how they're supposed to sound. I believe the 10th Anniversary was with the "dream cast" so I'd love to see you react to it. Edited to say that the Bishop (the man who gave Valjean the silver) is played by Colm Wilkinson, who is one of the men most famous for playing Jean Valjean. He actually plays him in the 25th Anniversary of it, and that cast is fantastic aside from Nick Jonas, who was not quite properly cast.

2026-09-07 01:00 The sad thing about this movie is that the actors were so mistreated in regards to their voices and singing, partly because of the director not knowing anything about it and partly bc of the live vocals - tho those two things are intertwined. The director wanted them to sing live while filming, but didn’t know what that entailed so he forced Hugh jackman to dehydrate himself before the slave scenes bc it made him seem skinnier, but that is also why his voice is so bad in this film. The director had multiple broadway actors at his disposal but bc of 8 hours of straight singing per day, and horrible vocal conditions, there are only one or two people in this movie who actually sound good. They all sang a Capella too, bc they could have the backing track, which is very obvious in some sounds, where the backing track doesn’t line up with the choreography

There’s a great video on the issues the actors had in les mis: https://youtu.be/1ikqU6G6Xgs?is=lwNdF2QyxnJCBaDb

I know I'm super, SUPER, late. I beseech you Luke, please react to a stage performance of Les Mis. The film is disappointing in comparison to most professional stage shows. For video recorded ones I prefer the 25th anniversary, but the 10th anniversary is also good. My favorite is the International Cast recording from I think 1998, but that's audio only though so not as good for a reaction, but it's the version that introduced me to this wonderful musical and nothing else compares to me anymore.
