I'm so happy your reacting to this!

Shogi is similar to chess except, in shogi, when you capture you're opponents pieces you can put them back into the game as part of your own army. So a game between 2 similarly skilled players can just keep going and going

Episode 3 is a masterpiece from start to finish. The sequence with Hina is just so brilliantly done. The lingering shot of her crying without any sound at all to then suddenly have the sound cut back in to hear her sobbing is so good. Rei and Hina sharing a moment that only they can understand since they have both gone through the same pain of losing family is beautifully sad.

I really love this anime. It makes you feel so many different emotions. There is a lot of sadness and grief, but also a lot of happiness and warmth.

Some0neElse

Dont worry, you dont need to know the rules of the game And yes, theres certain places where theres women working as hostess (sits with the customer, pouring drinks, keeps conversations with them etc). Yuji's mom from Toradora was a hostess too btw

DecoyBlackMage

So in regards to that workplace, you can read about it if you search "Host and hostess clubs" on wikipedia, though you likely already probably get it from the word host club.

Rinnosuke

The pain that comes with everyday life, and how to start healing.

Rinnosuke

What this anime is, in just a few words... I'd describe it as a glimpse into the life of Kiriyama Rei and those around him.

Soooo, the title is basically from the proverb: "In like a lion, out like a lamb", it is a very common one to know a variation of at least, basically March is still cold but spring comes at the end, which has a lot of meaning by itself. The Japanese title is literally "the lion of March" "3月のライオン San Gatsu No Raion" I heard some rumor that the mangaka saw something from a movie poster and liked the proverb, but I am not sure on that part.

Regarding your question at 1:03:23, I won’t spoil the show for you, but generally speaking, it’s going to be a mixed bag. Just like life, the emotional tone of this anime is going to have its joyous and solemn moments. Even aside from his parents dying at an early age, let’s just say Kiriyama has lived through a brutal childhood that no one should ever have to go through. This is an anime that will be documenting his personal growth. Also, there will be a lot more characters introduced and we will get to learn about them as well. Yes and no on your question about a consistent episode-by-episode narrative. There will be parts of this show that will have an on-going narrative (especially in Season 2), but it does have a lot of side stories as well. This show will be a lovely journey for you, Luke. These first three episodes are only the tip of the iceberg. There’s a very good reason why your community wanted you to watch this. As someone who has watched you for years, I always got the sense that this will be a show that you will fall in love with, especially as someone who is so family oriented and how much this show focuses on the emotional growth of a found family unit that will be growing more and more together.

It's funny, because something that drew me to this channel in the first place were Luke's genuine and strong emotional reactions, he's a sympathy crier! And I always hoped we'd get to see reactions to something like March Comes in Like a Lion, which is one of my all-time favorites that doesn't get nearly enough love, so I can't wait to see the rest of this journey

my 11th rewatch of this series, and 3rd read of the manga, this is an amazing series, after 11 rewatches, i still dont know anything about shogi. The best way i could describe this series is soul food, this anime is always saved on both my laptop and phone, so i can always find stregth to go on. On my last rewatch, it defroned Your Lie in april which i watched over 20 times, as my number one anime. When i was watching the naruto subathon, and tatersalad donated so many subs, and i heard him requesting march lion in march and april lie in april, i jumped out of my seat litterally, Thank you tatersalad, and good luck to you, Luke, for giving both these series a shot.

Itto Sanzzo

In a way, yeah, this is a sports anime

I came back to your patreon when I saw you were going to react to 3gatsu. I had sort of the same realisation as you did when I finished ep3, and it took me, like two years to finish that episode. I thought it wasn't for me and turned it off before the end of Rei's flashback at the mall. Only after I came back to it and finished ep3 did I realise that this anime was going to be special. It really, just really gets to you, sometimes through hardships and other times just through mundane things. Hope you enjoy the ride, I certainly will, I wanted to rewatch 3gatsu, happy to be here again

Adam

Man season one is good, but I really can't wait to see you react to season 2

davguev

18:46 March in Japanese is "sangatsu", and the block where the sisters live is Sangatsu. I don't know, I'm watching along for the first time, but there might be some relation to that.

I actually also wanted to learn Shogi while watching this Anime. And i did (the basics). But i still didn't understand much more of what's happening in the Anime. It's like a little kid that played a game of chess with their father watching magnus carlson play or something. Anyways. Absolutely beautiful Anime and after the ending of episode 3 i feel like i will need a lot more tissues when rewatching it with the reactions.

This anime is literally like a sadness you can't explain. You just feel it but also something you feel heavy nostalgia towards. Feels like a walk before a storm rolling in as you feel the refreshing wind hitting you. Gloomy but also something that's very enjoyable.

MarianSony

you did see characters play shogi before in hunter x hunter

Nikkelz

Probably more obvious for to him to remember naruto, hxh is known more for gungi which was made up for the show.

MarianSony

ah right I forgot it was gungixD

patros36

Im so excited for you watch it and im also excited to rewatch it with you. It has been something like 10 years since i watched it when it was coming out, so im guessing im going into it as a different person, but i have only fond memories of it. Its also probably the first piece of fiction that made me cry and after episode 3 i definitely know why. Hope you enjoy it and im looking forward to more episodes.

thewizardninja

A couple of things the show doesn't explain because it assumes you're Japanese and just know: 1. Obon is a festival for the dead, that's what the incense they were burning out back was for. That's also why the grandpa thought to ask Rei about where his parents were buried and why Rei mentioned "the wounds being too fresh" for reminiscing, which would imply the death of the girls' mother was fairly recent. Those both got brought up because it was relevant to Obon. 2. Akari works a hostess bar, sitting down with the customer, preparing their drinks and making conversation with them is her job. She is essentially paid to socially manipulate men into getting drunk so that they spend more money on getting drunk. Sometimes that means also getting drunk herself, which is probably why she has experience at making others throw up - she's probably had to do that for other hostesses on more than a few occasions and they've probably had to do that for her. It's considered a fairly seedy occupation but nowhere on the level of something like a stripper or anything like that.

If you like March Comes In Like A Lion, I recommend you to watch Monogatari Series

seansky

you can try to understand the moves but to be honest, the game itself is not really the main focus, so dont get too hung up that you dont understand it. The anime revolves around him playing the game and imo not bout the game itself. Either way at some point they explain some basic rules :D

Palmita

Since you reacted to the openings, I was hoping you'd react to this anime. It just makes me happy when someone else watches this story. It's one that lives constantly in my heart and is simply beautiful to watch. Thanks for sharing it!! <3

Huro

Fun fact: if I'm not wrong Chica Umino, the mangaka of Sangatsu no Lion, was a close friend of Kentaro Miura, Berserk's mangaka. It's fun knowing the contrast between their mangas. Berserk being so crude, bloody and dark, and Sangatsu being so "normal" and close to real life.

Cart

I've read the manga a while ago and never seen the anime I am so hyped. I feel like I'm crying again each episode... Oof...

yorozuyapetel

OH MY GOD YOU’RE WATCHING SANGATSU??? IVE BEEN WAITING AND HOPING FOR YEARS HELL YEAH. Top 3 just barely behind Gintama and re:zero, this show is so unbelievably beautiful and life changing to me. Gonna go watch your reaction to ep 1 right now, I’ve been dying to rewatch it

yorozuyapetel

Funny enough, the author, chica Umino didn’t know anything about Shogi, so she got a professional player to help her make sure the matches at least made sense and thematically worked. She really intended for people to grasp the emotions of the characters.

yorozuyapetel

I’ve analyzed this show to its bones, and episode 1 is sort of a beautiful microcosm of the entire series. It starts off In this lonely atmosphere, stays in that silent place for half the episode, until suddenly he’s asked to come over to the Kawamoto house

Tatersalad666

You are in for a treat. The anime is in my opinion one of the best adaptations of a manga ever. They each have their strengths, but man, the music and voice acting are incredibly good.

TheCreature

What makes March comes in Lika a Lion so special is, how human everyone is, how every character feels real, with their own backstory and life, their own problems and it shows how everyone in this work is dealing with their own situation. THAT is the best part of it all

yorozuyapetel

there's a lot of anime and manga out there that try to blend human emotions with strong emotional messages, but none that do it like chica umino. something about her art is always so down to earth and beautiful. once again you shock me with how quickly you can discern the core message of the show. the entirety is a slightly mixed experience of shogi and emotion, or you could say life. "the circle of life and learning" is how i internalize it in my head. there's not enough words in the dictionary to describe my love for this series. i've even considered creating a video deep dive through the whole anime, but i'd need to figure something out for that cause i spend way too much time on every other hobby already

I mean... that ep 3 hits hard!!!!

Boalex123

In the U.S. it is a federal crime to touch, open, mess with another persons mail/mailbox making it a felony. We used to live on a big hill and left a note once for the Amazon delivery driver saying that it was ok for him to leave our small packages in the mailbox, but the mailman/mailwoman came back and left a note next to it saying that no he can't because it is illegal. Of course if your neighbors mail is delivered to your house by mistake, no one is going to care if you just drop it off at their house. unless you have a real big Karen for a neighbor.

Eric Michel

The manga is also quite hard to figure out at first to be honest, it's interesting to watch you wrestle with all the different concepts. The overall idea is quite original and doesn't fit in one big anime type, and that's refreshing.

Siilan

It's illegal in Japan, too.

Chaolao

Bro... last episode always gets me teary eyed no matter how much I rewatch those scenes.
